Magnet Matrix Calculator

STEP-BY-STEP

The Magnet Matrix Calculator is provided as a tool to help parents and students determine if they may be qualified for certain magnet, vanguard, and fine arts schools. Not all schools will be using a matrix to determine if a student is qualified, but all schools who do use a matrix will use this matrix, which is the basis for the calculator. Use the table below to determine if a child qualifies to attend prekindergarten for free based on economically disadvantaged status. Please follow the steps below to use the calculator to determine your child’s qualification status:

1. Before beginning to use the calculator, make sure you have the following information available: a. The average grade for all core classes completed in 2015-2016 b. STAAR reading scores (unless applying only to fine arts or Vanguard schools) c. STAAR math scores (unless applying only to fine arts or Vanguard schools) d. Iowa reading scores (unless applying only to fine arts or Vanguard schools) e. Iowa math scores (unless applying only to fine arts or Vanguard schools)

2. Choose the grade level or program to which you are applying from the first selection box. a. If you select Fine Arts, you will not have to fill in any other fields. A school determined grade average

or higher earns an audition at all middle-school, fine-arts magnet schools. Please skip to step 9. Fleming 78 Lawson 75 Ortiz 70 Gregory Lincoln 78 Meyerland 78 Pershing 78 Key 78 Marshall 70 Welch 74

b. Note: High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) offers auditions to all applicants. 3. Choose the grade range in which your average grade for core classes falls.

a. If you are applying to Vanguard, you can skip to step 9. 4. Select the level at which your STAAR reading score falls. Click here if you are unsure at which level your score

belongs. 5. Select the level at which your STAAR math score falls. Click here if you are unsure at which level your score

belongs. 6. Select the level at which your Iowa reading score falls. 7. Select the level at which your Iowa math score falls. 8. If your child is identified as Limited English Proficient (LEP) or is eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, click

the checkbox. 9. Click the See Eligible Schools button to see the schools your child may qualify for.

a. You will receive a small alert box, which gives your final calculated score. 10. Click OK to get the list of schools that you may qualify to attend.

The Importance of Ranks

New this year, parents will be allowed to apply to 5 schools. The 2017 – 2018 school year includes the return of ranking to applications. The first application you complete will become your Rank 1 school. The second application you complete will become Rank 2. Third will be Rank 3 and so forth. Put “1” next to the most desired program, “2” next to the second highest ranked choice, and so on. It is very important that you think carefully about your ranking, because if your child is accepted to a program, any lower-ranked choice will be removed. You have until midnight on December 9, 2016 to re-arrange your school rankings. School ranks have absolutely nothing to do with the lottery. Your student has equal chance of acceptance among all schools to which they have both applied and qualified. The rank of a school is *significantly* important after the lottery has been run for all schools because the online system will default to the highest rank school to which your child was accepted. Example 1: Rank: School: What Happened in Lottery: What Parents See: Rank 1 School A Wait List Wait List Rank 2 School B Not Qualified Not Qualified Rank 3 School C Accepted Accepted Rank 4 School D Accepted ** Dropped ** Rank 5 School E Wait Listed ** Dropped ** Example 2: Rank: School: What Happened in Lottery: What Parents See: Rank 1 School A Accepted Accepted Rank 2 School B Not Qualified ** Dropped ** Rank 3 School C Accepted ** Dropped ** Rank 4 School D Accepted ** Dropped ** Rank 5 School E Wait Listed ** Dropped ** Example 3: Rank: School: What Happened in Lottery: What Parents See: Rank 1 School A Not Qualified Not Qualified Rank 2 School B Accepted Accepted Rank 3 School C Accepted ** Dropped ** Rank 4 School D Accepted ** Dropped ** Rank 5 School E Wait Listed ** Dropped **
