I am Louise Crossan and have a business employing 35 local people. An

important issue is the local economy. I think we should attract new businesses to

the city to create more jobs and give higher pay so our economic growth continues.

The recent floods caused by Hurricane Brenda took us all by surprise. I will make

investment in flood prevention schemes my main priority.

As a local businesswoman I know that we have good schools which produce well trained

pupils. Local people agree with me when I say we do not need them improved or changed.

The condition of our streets is very poor and regular maintenance must be improved. I will work to ensure the completion of improved highways to our neighbouring cities.

I will not waste money on Voter Registration Programme as democracy already works well in Rockford. I know the local issues and have the answers, ‘Cross Crossan’.

I am Brent Vandon and am a member of Rockford High School board. Education

is my first priority. I will make the changes to education that are wanted by

Rockford residents and bring children from all racial backgrounds together.

Public transport is poor and is seen as an very important issue and so should be greatly

improved.

Another important issue is the need for parks and open spaces where people can enjoy their leisure time. They do not need a new shopping complex, Red Pines should be left as it is.

The city has been spending too much causing local taxes to be increased. To cut taxes I

will stop unimportant projects like a new flood defence scheme.

I will expand the Voter Registration Programme to get more people involved in local

politics which is important for local democracy. As Mayor I will address all the important

issues and am the best choice, ‘Vote Vandon’.

The two people below are hoping to be elected Mayor of Rockford City.

The Rockford City RecordAll is not well in Rockford City.

We may be a wealthy community with incomes well above the national average, however, there

are a number of issues which concern local people. We decided to find out what was concerning

local people in the run up to the elections for Mayor by conducting an Opinion Poll to which 76%

of Rockford homes replied.

Education, Education, Education

There are over 7000 students attending the schools in Rockford City and the standard of

education is very good. Rockford High school is old and in poor condition and is due to be rebuilt. Most residents want to see it being turned into a magnet school which will promote racial integration and offer better course options for a much wider range of pupils for other towns.

Red Pine Development

The proposed new Red Pine commercial project will provide a range of shopping, recreation

And dining opportunities. Local businessmen believe that this will help economic growth,

Attracting shoppers from other towns. However, at present the site is an attractive wood used

by many local people for leisure.

Public transport is poor. Most people make extensive use of their cars and the condition of many

roads has been criticised. There have also been calls to improve the main road to the state capital

to help commuters reach their work and attract new jobs to the city.

Ravaged Rockford

In 2007, Hurricane Brenda caused serious flooding in the area. As a result many homes and

businesses were damaged and it is estimated that it will cost over $200 million to put right. The

risk is likely to rise due to global warming. Improvements to the storm water drainage

system would help reduce this risk in the future.

important issue is the local economy.

VRP gets people the Rockford they want,

Page 43: How to answer Credit ‘Option Questions’. In your answer you must have a clear structure which uses relevant and appropriate source material to answer.

Give two detailed reasons why you rejected the other candidate.

I rejected Louise Crossan for 2 reasons.

First she says that local people do not want schools improved or changed. This is wrong as local people want Rockford High turned into a magnet school to promote racial harmony and 34% think poor schools an important issue.

Louise says democracy in Rockford works and a VRP is a waste of money so she is also wrong as only 22% voted in the last election and more people voting would make their opinions count.
