BCAT Program GuideA Guide to What’s on Brooklyn Community Access Television
to strike a savvy tonal balance:One week she might shine a lighton young people held in facilitiesrun by the New York City Officeof Children and Family Services;the next week, she’ll interview anauthor or a musician.
“And remember, this is not justabout their book or their music,”Jarvelle points out. “It’s always‘Why did you write this song?,’‘What else do you do for thecommunity?,’ ‘Who else do youhelp?’” She “pushes people to dothings for the community” byleading by example, largely put-ting up her own funds in order toproduce the show. On the produc-tion side, she is especially effusivein her praise for, and gratitudeto, her director, Gasner Pierre-Christin, and her cameraman,Kerly Charles, both of GusProductions and smart, seasonedveterans.
Having had no prior experienceworking in television, Jarvelleadmits that she was full of trepida-tion. “But then I thought tomyself, ‘All right, so you’re scared, but you also have to do this show.’You have to write it and you haveto make it happen because therejust has to be a show about the[Caribbean and Haitian] commu-nity so we can talk about certainthings so many of us tend not towant to discuss.”
For example: Having been a suc-cessful working woman in Haiti,
Returning to New York in 2000,by January 2003 she devised a newway to put Haiti front and center:She created The Jarvelle Show, “thefirst and,” she says, “only Englishand Creole television talk show”devoted to the Caribbean commu-nity, whether expatriates or resi-dents, which can be seen weeklyon Brooklyn Community AccessTelevision (BCAT).
“I grew up here,” explainsJarvelle, as she likes to be knownon her show, “so when I moved[back] to Haiti, the way we think, the whole way they think—howwe react, how emotional we are—really made an impression on meand very often I thought, ‘MyGod, we need work!’ Then oneday back in New York I waswatching TV— Oprah, actually—and I thought to myself: ‘Thereyou go!’ After all, if you feel youhave a need to get into everyone’shouse to talk about the communi-ty and what is going on, as I do, atelevision program is really theway to do it.”
Whether taped before a liveaudience, in the studio, or in thecomfortable surroundings at herhome, the spectrum of topicscovered on The Jarvelle Show isboth impressive and exhaustive.Subjects range from hard-newselements (business, health, educa-tion, and immigration issues) tolighter fare, including sports andarts and culture. This permits her
Jarvelle’sCaribbean CrusadeBy Leonard Jacobs
Born in Port-au-Prince and raised in Brooklyn, Maria JarvelleGaston has long, strong emotional ties to her homeland.
Indeed, despite a surging career in American business—doingmarketing for J.C. Penney—she returned to Haiti in 1988 for adozen years, serving as marketing director for various endeavorsand becoming, in the process, an enormously successful woman ina land still struggling for economic, political, and sexual equality.
society’s treatment of her gender isa particular concern to her. “Partof the problem is how women aretreated, but another is that womenaccept that treatment. We neverquestion things—it’s the way ourparents raised us.
“Which is to say that, overall, wehave a way of blaming people forwhatever the problem is,” shewent on. “Let’s say we almost fallbecause we hit our foot on a rock.Instead of removing the rock so noone else can hit their foot, we ask,‘Who put the rock there?’” Byextolling the idea of self-empower-ment, Jarvelle says, Haiti’s myriadsocial and economic problemsmight at last be meaningfullyaddressed.
The show has inspired her toexpand her own skill sets: shebegins classes this week at BCAT’sMedia Center to learn how to usea video camera and edit her ownfootage.
“I would like to be the Oprah ofmy community,” she concludes. “Iwant us to get better, bigger, stronger—and I know we can doit.”–––––––––––––––––––––––––––The Jarvelle Show can be seenon BCAT Saturdays at 2:30pmon Time Warner Cable chan-nel 56, Cablevision channel69, and streaming live onlineat www.bcat.tv/bcat.
