Sedimentary Rocks Form in Four Steps
1.Erosion -water/wind/ice loosens and
carries away sediment (pieces
of other rocks or remains of
plants and animals
![Page 5: How Rocks Form - Ms. Mitchell 7 Gold Science](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022013001/61cbe4ea0b905b013e488da0/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
2.Deposition sediment settles out of the
water/wind/ice carrying it
(it is deposited)
![Page 6: How Rocks Form - Ms. Mitchell 7 Gold Science](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022013001/61cbe4ea0b905b013e488da0/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
3.Compaction -layers of sediment build up
-layers on the bottom get pressed
together (compacted)
-some of the minerals in the sediment
dissolve in the water around the
sediment
![Page 7: How Rocks Form - Ms. Mitchell 7 Gold Science](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022013001/61cbe4ea0b905b013e488da0/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
4.Cementation -the dissolved minerals
between the pieces of sediment
harden, gluing (or cementing)
the sediment together
Sedimentary Rock Formation Sedimentary rocks form through the deposition, compaction, and
cementation of sediments. A. Water or wind deposits sediment. B. The heavy sediments press
down on the layers beneath. C. Dissolved minerals flow between the particles and cement them
together.
Relating Cause and Effect What conditions are necessary for sedimentary rock to form?

Formed when igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks
are changed due to extreme heat and/or pressure (usually deep
underground)
