October 2010

Page 2: How High School-Age Millennials Use Digital: 8 Key Insights

As the social web, mobile, and other Internet-connected devices have risen in prominence we have been interested in their impact on people’s behaviors, attitudes, needs, and expectations (all of which comprise what we call NetspectationsTM). We have studied people’s use of the Internet all over the world since the early days of the Internet (call it 1994), and the new social paradigm is absolutely fascinating to us. We’ve done lots of client-specific studies and read countless survey-related data over the years. But given our insatiable desire to understand consumer motivations and expectations, we had to know more.

And who better to help us understand the “social technology” space than high school and college students? They have been raised on digital (so-called Digital Natives). The Internet has been part of their entire conscious lifetimes.

We’ve taken a closer look at this group outside the context of our normal client work to challenge and enrich our current understanding of their use of the social web and mobile. We began with college students (results published separately) and continued with a second study focusing on high school students (the focus of these findings).

For this second study we had two sets of high school aged students come into our innovation space to talk to us in-depth about their Internet-related activities and attitudes.

We will continue to publish topline findings as we explore this topic further. Hope you enjoy.

Page 3: How High School-Age Millennials Use Digital: 8 Key Insights

Twitter ≠ Love

None of the study participants are actively on Twitter and – unlike their college counterparts – they don’t even have dormant accounts

None of their friends are on Twitter; they don’t see the purpose, using words such as “unnecessary” and “annoying” when describing how they feel about Twitter

1

3

Page 4: How High School-Age Millennials Use Digital: 8 Key Insights

Facebook is “always on”

Facebook has assumed a vital role in communicating and staying in touch with friends; it is organically woven into the fabric of their lives; they gravitate to it without even thinking about it

Although Facebook is always up on their PCs, running in the background, they still have positive emotions towards the network, some listed it as their “favorite” site

2

4

Page 5: How High School-Age Millennials Use Digital: 8 Key Insights

Having the latest phone is not a necessity

They do not covet the latest phone and most of them do not have smartphones yet

When asked to identify the next digital device they were going to purchase, most indicated a laptop instead of an iPhone

3

5

Page 6: How High School-Age Millennials Use Digital: 8 Key Insights

They use advanced tools for communication, task completion and entertainment

Even though they don’t use cutting-edge Smartphones, they do use cutting edge tools such as Flickr, Evernote, Stumble Upon, Google reader and Tumblr

4

6

Page 7: How High School-Age Millennials Use Digital: 8 Key Insights

They self-regulate their Internet usage

All participants agreed that they “feel too connected” and that they “spend too much time on line wasting time”; the Internet (Facebook in particular) can be all-consuming

Some mentioned apps that can selectively block certain sites like facebook that they apply when they need to be productive

There is a conscious effort to disconnect from the Internet when things need to get done, such as school work and college applications

5

7

Page 8: How High School-Age Millennials Use Digital: 8 Key Insights

Internet privacy is focused more on security rather than personal information

Cautious of and cognizant about online privacy and security around social security numbers and credit card information; this may stem from the fact they all are using their parent’s credit cards to buy things online

They all recognize that Facebook displays their personal information, but they think of this more as a value exchange (i.e., I give you my information but you allow me to stay in touch with my friends); they don’t extensively try to manipulate privacy settings for greater security of their information

6

8

Page 9: How High School-Age Millennials Use Digital: 8 Key Insights

They are in control of when and how they consume their entertainment content

The television is not the primary device for watching TV: Laptop is primary device for watching network / cable content because it allows for time-shifting, which is very common (e.g., Hulu)

A main reason cited for time-shifting is the ability to socially consume it with friends, either online (chatting while watching) or offline (viewing it together)

7

9

Page 10: How High School-Age Millennials Use Digital: 8 Key Insights

Natural constraints accompany their life stage

Limited access to the Internet because they’re in school all day

Limited capacity to purchase latest gadgets since they are largely supported financially by their parents

Lack of exposure to emerging / cutting-edge use cases (e.g., QR codes, GPS) limits their known use cases

Page 11: How High School-Age Millennials Use Digital: 8 Key Insights

Within these thematic findings exists a diversity of digital behaviors among high school - age Millennials; they cannot be generalized into a single, neatly-defined segment. More so than their college counterparts, they exhibit NetspectationsTM that are different from older cohorts (e.g., willingness to share personal information, ability to time-shift consumption of TV content). However, there are some similarities, particularly around Internet security concerns (e.g., credit card and social security information) and recognition of the negative impact of spending too much time online.

From speaking to two distinct sets of Millennials (high school and college students), we found that some habits of high schoolers seem more aligned with older generations, e.g., boomers. For instance, high schoolers still print Google maps when they are trying to navigate somewhere, whereas college students rely on mobile apps for GPS. We hypothesize that some of this may be because high schoolers are still living at home with their parents and as such a) haven’t been exposed to advanced digital tools / behaviors and b) simply do not have advanced use cases – the types of use cases that will undoubtedly exist once they move on to the next life stage.

As with our first study with college students, this study has been a joy to conduct, and we plan on continuing to feed our intellectual curiosity in this area. If there is a particular topic in which you are interested, feel free to reach out to us via e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or phone. We’d be happy to discuss our findings – and plans for future studies – in more detail.
