Jens Kleinert 1 , Martin Boss 1 , Simone Breuer 1 1 Institute of Psychology, German Sports University Cologne Abstract The subjective health perception of competitive athletes stands in close relation to their level of performance. Therefore a realistic selfevaluation is of particular importance to optimize training and performance variables. Within a multidisciplinary physical and psychological heath examination 341 youth athletes were questioned about their wellbeing and health behavior. Every tenth athlete was found to be physically or mentally impaired in some respects. Problems in regard to health behavior were stated by every seventh and difficulties sleeping by every second athlete. Three quarters wanted to improve their health condition and females felt generally worse than males. The main result of this study is that many young athletes perceive health impairments. Therefore, Coaches and advisors should detect these and similar variables in order to consider their implications during training and coaching situations. Abstract

The  subjective health perception of  competitive athletes  stands  in  close  relation  to  their level  of  performance.  Therefore  a  realistic  self‐evaluation  is  of  particular  importance  to optimize training and performance variables.

Within a multidisciplinary physical and psychological heath examination 341 youth athletes were questioned about their well‐being and health behavior.
