HOW HAVE OUR ANCILLARY TASKS CHANGED

SINCE THE FIRST DRAFT?

Our main product which was to produce a music video for a Selena Gomez song,

has developed significantly since the original draft. First, we placed the shots in a

random order where we believed they would look appropriate, the quality of the

footage was not clear and due to the variety of filters and colour differences some of

the shots looked out of place, lowering the level of continuity. Additionally, at the

beginning the female character did not sing in time to the music as she was unaware

of the song, the audience were able to identify where we have cut the footage due to

the jerky movement and the transitions used were basic. Overall the narrative was

not as clear as it could be and not many close ups were utilized, which made it

difficult to view facial expressions and the characters emotions.

The final version of our video was considerably better than the first draft, and the reason for

this was that we were aware of the different tools/ techniques and how to utilize them. We

added a title, the characters names, and the shots were in more of a chronological format,

which made the narrative easier to understand. Furthermore, we used close up shots to

portray the characters expressions and feelings, the lip syncing to music improved, and new/

different shots were added, making the video stand out and hold significance. The filters were

now in time with the lyrics and made the footage look more appealing, a slow motion effect

was inserted onto the footage where applicable, different angles and shots were used and

there was a greater level of continuity between shots.

For our ancillary tasks we had to produce a CD cover and

magazine advertisement. We created a range of drafts, some

of which are similar and have little differences (CD cover),

whilst the magazine ad has been edited a numerous amount of

times from its original form. This implies we had received

different opinions from our target audience in the research

process (questionnaire), and that our ideas/ way of thinking

had changed in order to form our final product. One major

change we made to both products was to change the title of

the album to ‘Heart & Soul’ which is small, simple and easy to

remember. In regards to the CD cover, we only changed the

font and colour of the text, enhanced the effect on the front

page and added the female characters picture onto the CD, to

improve its appearance and recognition. There were only a few

edits which we made for this ancillary task.

On the other hand, as you can identify we made a great amount

of changes to our magazine advertisement. Firstly, it went from a

portrait image to landscape, as the picture was more

appropriate, and looked more natural, we changed the font of

the text so it could be easily read by our target audience, and

then edited the position of the other texts. We added the artists

website address and a modern form of communication to

increase the level of interactivity between individuals and the

product (use of ‘#’). The effect on the image is of a gradient

going from bright sunlight to normal lighting, which indicates the

range of techniques we used to create this product. The second

ancillary task did take us a longer period of time to edit, however

it has met both our and the audiences requirements.
