Senior Vice President Chris McLaughlin.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said Monday that the p lanewas last tracked over the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth,

Monday's announcement brings new questions about the mystery

that has captivated the planet for more than two weeks. It also

provoked a call that all airliners be constantly tracked.

The mathematics-based process used by Inmarsat andthe UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) to

reveal the definitive path was described by McLaughlin as"groundbreaking."

"We've done something new," he said.

Here's how the process works in a nutshell: Inmarsatofficials and engineers were able to determine whether

the plane was flying away or toward the satellite's locationby expansion or compression of the satellite's signal.

past. That's exactly what we have," explained CNN

Meteorologist Chad Myers,who has studied Dopplertechnology. "It's the Doppler effect that they're using on

this ping or handshake back from the airplane. They knowby nanoseconds whether that signal was compressed a

little -- or expanded -- by whether the plane was movingcloser or away from 64.5 degrees -- which is the latitude

of the orbiting satellite."

Each ping was analyzed for its direction of travel, Myers

said. The new calculations, McLaughlin said, underwent apeer review process with space agency experts and

contributions by Boeing.

It's possible to use this analysis to determine morespecifically the area where the plane went down, Myers said. "Using

trigonometry, engineers are capable of finding angles of flight."

What could wreckage tell us about Flight 370's fate?

No surprise

Experts said they weren't surprised by the news that the flight

traveled along the southern track -- one of two possible pathsrevealed by satellite data last week. The possible northern track

toward Pakistan would have been heavily monitored by radar.Pakistan had said it found no evidence of Flight 370 on its radar

systems.

"It was very difficult to believe that no watch captain"

along the possible northern path "would've seen aburning or distressed aircraft in the sky during the course

of their watch," said McLaughlin.

Is the more pinpointed flight path now focused enough toincrease the chances of finding wreckage from the plane?

If the flight definitely ended far from land, does thatsupport the theory that the plane was not hijacked? It's

just one question of many that investigators likely will bepondering in the coming days.

Hours before the Prime Minister's announcement,

Australian officials said they had spot ted two objects inthe southern Indian Ocean that could be related to the

flight, which has been missing since March 8.

One object is "a gray or green circular object," and the

other is "an orange rectangular object," the AustralianMaritime Safety Authority said.

"This is obviously a major tragedy," McLaughlin said. "The

only thing you can hope is that from this, just as the Titanic resultedin (new safety legislation), that from this, there will be a mandate

that all aircraft should be constantly tracked."

CNN: please stop with the pictures of the grieving relatives who clearly do not want

to be photographed. They have hands up covering their faces and shouldn't have to

deal with so many photographers.

Its not news that they're grieving, anyone would be. Plenty of other aspects of this

that you can cover. Very scummy low level journalismif you ask me.

I have often thought that motorcycle crashes, and similar

things should be shown in every bit of gory detail. The purpose

would to let people know what actually happens, rather than

waiting for it to happen to them or their loved ones or friends. It

would seem better to see some of these gory details, if it

would prevent death and injury going forward.

pedestrians hit by cars, people who fell off cliffs and policeshootings. Throw in a few drunk driving victims and drowning

victims for good measure. Maybe then people will just stay in

other media organizations. I watched Andersen Cooper lastnight and out of respect for the victims families he didn't show

their reactions. You flip on Fox News and you have Bill O'Reilly

telling everyone he was correct on his assertion of the flight

crashing due to pilot intentions, and he immediately has that

blabber mouth Bernie Goldberg disenfranchising the

mainstream media...it's just one big broken record on that

network.

brought up. I have seen victims of almost every accident you

could imagine. If people were shown some of these things, it

foods and sugars. Show stroke victims who suffer from

hypertension due to drinking coffee, and also show colon and

stabbed to death and suicides of lonely people...we want t see

from risky behavior by public displays and discussion is that

pointless ? Information on all manner of things that can cause

us problems should also be available in libraries, on the

internet, etc.; so if one wishes to seek out such things, one

can find them. Warning people that if they drink a fifth of

bourbon over a one hour period or less, they will die seemsworthwhile. Every year in some U.S. college such a death

occurs, and I don't think it happens to someone who knows it

will mean certain death. Your suggestions made to bolster

This is a very thoughtful comment. Early on, all children

should be taught in school about the value of life and its

precariousness. The dangers of drinkig, in particular, should

be exemplified with examples of how mind loses its

awareness after a few drinks! I racall how I rolled over in

Alaska, after emptying a quart of vodka. I continued my drivingimmediately, forgetting fo a second that the road was covered

with ice sprinkled with rain, a deadly combination. Or the

Irishman, James Nolan, his example also comes to mind. He

had been drinking in a Polish bar, in Bydgoszcz, Poland, a

year or so ago. After heavy drinking, he felt "immortal." Then

he walked outside to take some fresh air. Ended dead in the

nearby river. True story. May he rest in peace! Incidentally, we

do need another Prohibition in view that in the 1920's we only

had a few Ford T's on the highways. Now we have 50, 000 car

accident deaths each year! Let's disregard the "experts" and

try another Prohibition!

happened to this plane than we did two weeks ago. It's not

narrowing things down much to say it's somewhere in the

Indian Ocean. In the absence of data, CNN goes wall to wall

with speculation, conjecture and wild a** guesses. If, as

seems increasingly likely, nothing of the plane is ever found,

you can bet this will join the ranks of 9/11 truther conspiracies.

place and you will see tons of pictures of cars of drunk drivers

and red light runners that maimed or killed an innocent person

or people. But not sure I want to see the grieving parents or

Fair point, and, of course, this is the essence of this debate. I

would not have made the post unless I was more than willing

to have people see my distraught behaviour in exchange for

motivating some to put resources behind finding answers

about my loved ones for me. So, I personally have no doublestandard on this, although I can perfectly understand how

some people would be most uncomfortable about it.

Whichever way one looks at this, there's no doubt in my mind

that some of these scenes being in the media helped to focus

important minds on the search that may not otherwise have

been bothered.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I have not come to

CNN hoping to see pictures of grieving relatives. I have come

only for information on the investigation. I would strongly prefer

that all news outlets give the families of the victims their

privacy and dignity. They are under terrible emotional stress

and it's not only rude but just plain mean and

uncompassionate to splash photos and videos of them having

emotional meltdowns on the news. That's not news; that's

exploitation.

grieving families. It helps those of us who are reading the

stories connect to the story. That's what news is/does. This

isn't anything new.
