How Does Early Achievers work? All licensed and certified programs will have the opportunity to enroll in Early Achievers. Participants will have access to a variety of supports and resources to help them improve

their quality of care and achieve higher Early Achiever ratings. A higher rating means the provider has demonstrated a solid track record for providing

high-quality child care. Simply by participating in Early Achievers, child care and early learning providers

demonstrate a commitment to improving quality.

What are the Early Achievers quality levels and what do they mean? LEVEL 1: Licensing or certification Includes all licensed child care centers and family child care, military, tribal, Head Start, and ECEAP, and other state-funded programs. LEVEL 2: Professional Growth and Facility Management Facility leadership will complete a series of activities including the Professional Training Series and self-assessment. LEVELS 3 through 5 rating are assigned points based on: ~Child outcomes ~Curriculum, learning, environments and interactions ~Professional development and training ~Family Engagement and partnership

MERIT Portable Background Check

As of July 1, 2013, all licensed child care providers are required to submit portable background check applications in MERIT. You must complete this process in MERIT even if your background check is still current. All online applications must be completed by June 30, 2013. If your current background check expires before July 1, 2013, you need to complete the portable background check before its expiration date. If you are 16 years or older and do not complete your portable background check before the expiration date, you will be required to complete the fingerprinting process. Hand Print Butterflies

Necessary Materials

-2 Pieces of Construction Paper

-Scissors

-Glue

-Crayons/Markers

-Googly eyes

-Sequins

-Pipe Cleaners, if desired

Directions 1. Start by tracing your child’s hands on one piece of con-

struction paper 2. Next give your child the 2nd piece of construction paper

and have them draw whatever they want for the butterfly

habitat. 3. While they create a butterfly habitat, or just scribble (it’s

all great practice and creativity!) cut out the hands and lay

the thumbs on top of each other. Trim the bottom so it

looks like a butterfly, then glue together.

4. Glue the butterfly onto the decorated paper. 5. Use a crayon to outline where the body is and some an-

tennae. 6. Add glue and then add the bling- start with the eyes. Add

lots of beautiful sequins. Picking up these tiny sequins is an

awesome fine motor activity. Encourage your child to pick

them up making an O with their thumb and index finger,

not by sliding them off the table.

7. Let dry!

Fresh ice-cream in about 5 minutes!

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon sugar

1/2 cup milk or half & half

1/4 teaspoon vanilla

6 tablespoons rock salt

1 pint−size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc)

1 gallon−size plastic food storage bag

Ice cubes

How to make it: Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the

bag. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again

carefully. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes

about 5 minutes. Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully.

Enjoy!

Keep children safe this summer by following these tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Fun in the Sun Babies under 6 months:

The two main recommendations from the AAP to prevent sunburn are to avoid sun exposure, and to dress infants in lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and brimmed hats that shade the neck to prevent sunburn. However, when adequate clothing and shade are not available, parents can apply a minimal amount of sunscreen with at least 15 SPF (sun protection factor) to small areas, such as the infant's face and the back of the hands. If an infant gets sunburn, apply cool compresses to the affected area.

For All Other Children:

The first, and best, line of defense against harmful ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is covering up. Wear a hat with a three-inch brim or a bill facing forward, sunglasses (look for sunglasses that provide 97% -100% protection against both UVA and UVB rays), and cotton clothing with a tight weave.

Stay in the shade whenever possible, and limit sun exposure during the peak intensity hours - between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

On both sunny and cloudy days use a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or greater that protects against UVA and UVB rays.

Be sure to apply enough sunscreen -- about one ounce per sitting for a young adult.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

Use extra caution near water and sand (and even snow!) as they reflect UV rays and may result in sunburn more quickly.

Heat Stress in Exercising Children The intensity of activities that last 15 minutes or more should be reduced whenever high heat and humidity reach critical levels.

At the beginning of a strenuous exercise program or after traveling to a warmer climate, the intensity and duration of exercise should be limited initially and then gradually increased during a period of 7 to 14 days to acclimatize to the heat, particularly if it is very humid.

Before prolonged physical activity, children should be well-hydrated and should not feel thirsty. For the first hour of exercise, water alone

can be used. Kids should have water or a sports drink always available and drink every 20 minutes while exercising in the heat.

Clothing should be light-colored and lightweight and limited to one layer of absorbent material to facilitate evaporation of sweat. Sweat- saturated shirts should be replaced by dry clothing.

Practices and games played in the heat should be shortened and more frequent water/hydration breaks should be instituted. Children
