How Do Your Employees See You?By Scott Avila
According to an article in the Harvard Business
Review, employees see theirboss as a mental image, notas an individual. Take a lookat these suggestions on how
to make sure youremployees' mental image of
you is the right one.
First ImpressionsAccording to the authors of the article, employees "tend to judge a book by its cover" and form a mentalimage of their boss based on first impressions and observations. To improve the image employees haveof you, make sure you always present a positive and professional attitude.
Questioning
Employees also askthe same questionsabout their bosses, specifically: Does heor she have highstandards? Do theycare about me on apersonal level? Dothey have a vision, and do they seemhuman andrelatable?
StoriesOne of the most effective ways to present yourself to employees is through stories or anecdotes. Aspeople tell and retell stories about your accomplishments and decision-making, employees will beginto place more and more faith in you as a leader.
Employees listen tostories about their bossand listen for examplesof trustworthiness. Doesthe boss speak honestly
and directly? Doreputable third-parties inthe office have opinionson their trustworthiness? These variables will
influence whether or notemployees feel that they
can trust you.
