How Do You Install a New Kitchen Tap?
Installing your own kitchen taps can be a straightforward DIY task, as long as you know the correct
procedure to follow. Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are installing the tap.
Before Removing the Tap
Before you remove the old tap, you should
check to make sure that both the hot and
cold water have been turned off. Most taps
will have an isolated water valve so that you
can turn off the water to the tap without
having to turn off the water for the entire
house. You must also drain the pipes through
the taps by using a lower tap on the system
to make sure that any remaining water is
completely removed.
Make sure that you have chosen the right
new tap for the level of water pressure in your home. You should also check to make sure that the
taps in the old sink will fit. If you have an older sink basin, it might have a square hole which means
that modern round taps will not fit and you will need to use a chrome cover plate.
Removing the Old Tap
Start by using a claw spanner to undo the tap
connectors and the back nuts that are located on the
underside of the sink. You can ask someone to hold
the tap to keep it from turning. If you don’t have an
assistant to help you, it is also possible to use a block
of wood as a lever to hold the tap steady by placing it
between the side of the kitchen sink and the tap
spout.
If you have trouble getting the old tap to move, you can try cutting through the brass back nut with a
hacksaw and using an old screwdriver to force it back open.
Installing the New Tap
First, clean the area around the tap. Then, put the tap through the hole in the sink body, first placing
an anti-rotation washer on the upper side to hold it steady. If the material of the sink is very thin, you
could use a plastic washer to add more space on the underside. Hold the tap in a steady position and
then make sure that the back nuts are tight.
When it comes to the old pipe work you
might find that it doesn’t fit and feels
awkward. In this case, you will need to cut
back the pipes and install new
connectors. The easiest type to fit is the
flexible braided variety.
Make sure that all washers are fitted the
right way and screw all pipes and hoses
tight. Check the kitchen faucet for leaks
and if all looks good, you are finished and
ready to enjoy your new faucet.
