A new approach to designing teams

an evolutionary, multidisciplinary solution

presented by Atma Degeyndt

Part 1: New Rules

If you don't like the way a game is going, you have some

options.

But, what are rules?

For our purpose rules are expectations, social norms, mores,

customs, and such.

What are the rules that govern teams?

there’s the rub…

No one has really figured this out

not even google…

So how shall we proceed into this almost indecipherable morass?

We have to build a an evolutionary, multidisciplinary solution.

This brings us to part 2…

Part 2: Using Mechanism Design, Superrationality, Knowledge Sharing, and

Metacognition to break the rules.

whew… let break these down first

Mechanism Design

a subset of game theory

Instigating Question:

How should a planner reach a decision when the quality of the decision relies on information spread among a number of people?

This is the mathematical formulation of this question at the heart of mechanism design theory.

In English that says…

that any solution should take into account the incentives of self-interested agents…

How does a hamster write a detective novel?

It starts with the ending and works its way backwards.

A mechanism design problem has 3 key inputs:

1. A collective decision problem2. A criteria for assessing outcome3. A description of the resources – knowledge,

data, emotions, desires, etc…, held by the participants.

Superrationality

an alternative type of rational-decision-making

Homo Reciprocans

humans are capable of following their better angels (when properly

motivated)

E.G. Reciprocal Benefit Incentive

an RBI is when one entity’s success is tied to the success of a partner

entity

Knowledge Sharing

prioritizing knowledge sharing over the knowledge itself

Metacognition

paying attention, to paying attention

How do all four pieces fit together?

Framework/Summary/Science1. MD - Design from back to front (Game Theory)2. SR - Wire in mutualism and reciprocal benefits (Game

Theory)3. KS - Enshrine learning and X-training (Organization Science)4. MC - The Circle of Permission (Cognitive Psychology)
