Having been mined first in India, it is no surprise that diamonds have been a

required for the formation of diamonds, there are very few places where one

can mine diamonds from.  The Kollur mines in Andhra Pradesh and Panna city

in Madhya Pradesh are the only known diamond mines in India through which

India has managed to become one of the largest exporters of diamonds in the

world.

Contributing to about 6­7% of the Gross Domestic Product of India, Indian

Gem and Jewelry Industry is a major focus of export for the Indian

government, contributing to US$39.9 billion where foreign exchange earnings

are concerned in the financial year of 2014­15. The export of cut and polished

diamonds increased notably in the past year. India has also exported diamonds

to a significantly larger extent compared to previous years, making India one of

the largest diamond exporters in the world. India is, therefore, well on its way

to making its mark in the world in the gem and jewelry sector where trading in

diamonds is concerned.

With the change in peoples’ preferences, where style and design of the jewelry

is concerned, many jewelry stores have opened up that cater to the needs of

the people by creating designs that are unique, modern and elegant at the

same time. Many abroad based companies have invested huge amount of

capital in Indian jewelry firms and vice­versa, leading to a vast increase in the

number of investments in this sector.

Many businessmen and jewelry firms in India and abroad have ventured to

bring about an expansion in diamond trading by investing in small scale

domestic firms as well forming ties with international firms that specialize in

gemstones mining. Certain banks, too, have stepped into jewelry and financing

with expectations of seeing a notable increase in this sector.

With India being the top global diamond processor, the Indian government is

taking initiatives for tax benefits on import and trade of diamonds in Mumbai,

which will rival that of the highest diamond trading hubs­ Antwerp and Dubai.

The Gem and Jewelry Skill Council of India will also be training a large number

of people in the trade of gems because of the shortage of manpower in this

sector. With proficient and resourceful manpower, the gem and jewelry

industry is bound to bloom a great deal.

Many training institutes for diamond cutting and processing too are expected to

be set up along with tie ups with existing training institutes that will help raise

the diamond market.

With all the investments being made to expand this sector and the increase in

opportunities made by established firms, the growth in this industry will be a

significant one over the years as more and more initiatives are taken toward

increasing the gem industry further.  The guidance provided by established

brands, too, can help in making the right decisions and taking the right steps

toward expanding the reach of the diamond sector throughout.

The increase in development of this sector is expected to be seen with the

growing interest of people in this industry as well as the rise in demand for

jewelry as the trend sets.
