Operations / Technology1. Some FCCUs have “try lines” on the

main fractionator that can be used toverify the bottoms level. In what cir-cumstances do you use the try linesto verify the level? What safety meas-ures and operating procedures doyou recommend given the presenceof hydrogen sulfide in the vaporphase?

2. How do you train new operators forabnormal situations? How do youkeep experienced operators sharpand ready to handle FCCU upsetsand emergencies? Do you use simula-tors to help with the training andretraining? Does greater reliance onadvanced process controls in normaloperation make preparation for abnor-mal situations more challenging?

3. Do you use a training simulator tailored specifically to your particularunit’s behavior and instrumentationrather than a generic FCC simulator?

4. For FCC units producing high levels ofpropylene, the operating conditionsand catalyst properties promote sidereactions which produce different orexcessive product contaminants rela-tive to typical FCC units optimized forgasoline production. Has this impactedthe operation of your gasoline or LPGtreating units? Have you identifiedspecific contaminants which are higherfor the propylene mode of operation?Have you noticed an impact on aminefoaming, color, or consumption? If you have experienced problems inyour treating unit, what actions haveyou taken to mitigate or prevent theproblem?

5. If your flue gas boiler does not havesootblower capability, what measuresdo you take to maintain or improveheat transfer? Is walnut shell injectionan option?

6. Describe your continuous catalystwithdrawal system. Is the hopperunder vacuum or is the hopper atatmsopheric pressure? How is theflow regulated? What metallurgy doyou specify for the spent catalystlines? How do you capture dust fromthe hopper? How do you cool downthe catalyst so that it can be loadedinto trucks?

7. How do you ensure proper operationof secondary cyclone diplegs duringstart-up and shutdown?

Track IIIMechanicalDiscovery B

8:00 am – 9:30 amMetallurgy – General ApplicationsClay White, ConocoPhillips

Track IIIMechanicalDiscovery B

9:45 am – 10:45 amAnalyzing Hot Spots for Stress andStrain using Finite Element AnalysisKen Fewel, Shaw Energy & Chemicals

Finite element analysis (FEA) is an accu-rate, state-of-the-art method to computestress and strain in your vessel, pipingand refractory lined systems using solid3-D computer models. Specific hot spotsand other abnormal loads for a variety ofconditions, including shutdown and start-up, can be included in these models todetermine the unit’s safety. FEA can beused to determine how close the unit is tothe ASME safety limits for a specific hotspot condition. With this information therefiner can decide if it is necessary toshut down to make repairs or to continuerunning until the normally scheduled turnaround. An example of an actualapplication of FEA to analyze a hot spoton an FCC unit will be explained.
