Letter to Patrons....................................................................

With this Annual Report edition of Houston Symphony Magazine, we aim to provide a recap of our 2009-10 season and to recog-nize the generous support and involvement of so many people who make up our symphony family.

Looking back, we are very proud of many artistic and institutional achievements that occurred during the past season. Our pro-duction of The Planets—An HD Odyssey was a resounding success with five sold-out per-formances in Houston, a successful tour to Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kravis and Broward Centers in Florida, and extensive press coverage including a segment on CBS Sunday Morning News.

We launched a new website during the season, and we were the first arts organiza-tion in Houston to offer an iPhone application. Technology was embraced and used to con-nect with audiences both new and existing with social media outlets such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

A two-year project to evaluate, redesign and expand our education program was com-pleted. As an initial result of new procedures, seat utilization in Jones Hall for our Detectives and Explorers education concerts increased from 55 to 85 percent.

It was also a year of transition for our lead-ership team. Matthew VanBesien resigned to take the head post at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and after an extensive, focused search, we welcomed Mark C. Hanson as the Houston Symphony’s new Executive Director/CEO. Music Director Hans Graf extended his contract through the 2012-2013 season (his 12th season), at which time he will become the longest-serving Music Director in Houston Symphony history. Michael Krajewski cel-ebrated his 10th season with us as Principal Pops Conductor. The retirement of David Rockoff launched a new executive search for a new Senior Director of Development to

help lead the organization into an era of much-needed donor growth.

The weak economy required institution-wide sacrifices and led to an operating deficit for the season. We express our deep thanks to both musicians and staff for accepting furlough weeks during the past year that made up part of our financial response to the global recession. Over the past four months, Symphony Society leadership has developed a five-year financial plan, formally approved by the Board, that will serve as our blueprint for the next period of artistic accomplishment and financial stability.

The Houston Endowment has stepped for-ward in strong support of this five-year finan-cial plan. Over the next three years, Houston Endowment will be contributing $5 million to the Houston Symphony’s new Sustainability Fund, a multi-year campaign to reduce our long-term debt. The gift of $3 million allowed for imme-diate debt reduction help in FY 10. Another $2 million will be given to the Sustainability Fund over the next two years if we meet important financial benchmarks in FY 11 and FY 12. If we succeed, the institution will receive $1 million in 2011 and an additional $1 million in 2012. To secure the $1 million gift in 2011, we will need to attract more than 1,000 new donors and raise more than $8 million in annual fund revenue by May 31, 2011. This type of support over such a short period of time is unprecedented, but the symphony will do its utmost to meet these ambi-tious goals.

We look forward to experiencing many incredible Houston Symphony performances with you during the upcoming season and thank you for so generously supporting our great Houston Symphony.

Sincerely,

Mark C. Hanson Executive Director/CEO

Houston Symphony: Our Commitment to Houston .......................................

2009-2010 Classical Season Highlights...........................

We are Houston’s orchestra, and that brings special responsibilities that all of us – Board, musicians, volunteers and staff – have to meet. As Houston’s orchestra, we aspire to bring the best the world has to offer to Houston and in turn, give the best of Houston back to the world. We believe in creating and sharing music that excites, stirs the soul and provokes thought and artistic expression. As Houston’s orchestra, we bring a wide range of people together to share magical, unforgettable musical moments that inspire passion for and action within the Houston arts community.

Recently, we revealed our new long-range strategic plan to fulfill those responsibilities and reach those goals during the years to come. The plan came about through the hard, collaborative work of all ele-ments of the Houston Symphony family. The keystone of that work was the restatement of our mission, our vision for the future and the core values that are the bedrock of everything we do.

Mission The mission of the Houston Symphony is to inspire and enrich the lives of our diverse citizenry through outstanding symphonic music performed by our great orchestra.

Vision Our vision is to be the entrepreneurial cornerstone of the performing arts in Houston through our performances, partnerships, connection to the community and educational activities.

Core Values Artistic excellence: • We will maintain the highest international standards in performing

and programming

Organizational excellence: • We will always operate in a culture of service, respect and collaboration • We will attract and retain the finest musicians, staff and volunteers • We will constantly strive to be the industry leader for innovative pro-

gramming and presentation

Excellence in stewardship: • We will maintain a sound financial condition with clear accountability

Of equal importance is the establishment of a set of goals for the insti-tution – goals that we believe will enable us to fulfill our mission and benefit the community we serve.

Institutional Goals: • Be one of the leading orchestras in the world • Be the model for innovative orchestras in the 21st century • Be seen as the leader and ambassador of the rich cultural life in Houston • Develop a more intimate and acoustically superior orchestral concert

hall and music center While changing times have dictated some revisions in how we are stating our mission and our vision for the future, it is important to realize that our core values have not changed – artistic excellence, organizational excellence and excellence in stewardship – values that have motivated this institution for decades.

• In September 2009, the symphony presented the North American premiere of the completely restored score and film of Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier.

• The symphony completed its recordings of Gustav Mahler song cycles with Das Lied von der Erde in November 2009.

• The orchestra performed five sold-out performances in Houston of The Planets—An HD Odyssey in January 2010 and in New York’s Carnegie Hall and Florida’s Kravis Center and Broward Center.

• Houston welcomed guest artists to Jones Hall, including pianists Emanuel Ax, Jeffrey Kahane, Gilmore Award winner Kirill Gerstein and Radu Lupu, as well as violinist James Ehnes and cellist Alban Gerhardt.

Through collaboration with NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and award-winning pro-ducer/director Duncan Copp, the Houston Symphony crafted a film of the latest, high-definition planetary images shown on a 24-foot screen above the stage, and married them to a live perfor-mance of Gustav Holst’s suite, The Planets. The world premiere of The Planets—An HD Odyssey was performed in Jones Hall on Thursday, January 21, 2010.

The monumental and innovative project consisted of five concerts in four days in Houston, drawing the largest weekend audience in Houston Symphony history (9,700) before touring to New York’s Carnegie Hall and Florida’s Kravis Center and Broward Center. The concerts received unprecedented coverage in local and national media, including prominent articles in the New York Times and a featured segment on CBS Sunday Morning.

“This combination of music and science can provide a deeper emotional dimension to the splendid cosmic images, a depth which is not to be experienced without the joyful power and delicate sensuality of Holst’s remarkable orchestra pieces.” - Hans Graf

Generous community and corporate support for this multimedia event was given by LINN Energy, The Methodist Hospital System, Weill Cornell Medical College, The Albert & Margaret Alkek Foundation, San Jacinto Community College and KUHF 88.7 FM Houston Public Radio. It car-ries special significance because of Houston’s relationship with both NASA and the symphony.

This engaging production garnered such critical acclaim and success that more than 3,500 DVDs have been sold and a relationship with Amazon.com has been established to ease and broaden our efforts. The performances and successful media campaigns drew such a high demand for the DVDs that, assuming consumer fraud, Amazon temporarily blocked access to our site in response to the abnormally high amount of web traffic. Continued DVD sales and orchestra licens-ing fees from The Planets—An HD Odyssey will benefit the symphony for years to come.

These concerts provided many Houston-area residents with their first exposure to the sym-phony and downtown Houston, and record-breaking attendance for the event translated into addi-tional exposure of Houston’s Theater District to a new audience. The project has also strengthened the Houston Symphony’s longstanding educational partnership with NASA. With the assistance of NASA’s Department of Education, an educational DVD is being developed that uses the performance to stimulate students’ interest in a variety of topics, ranging from mythology and musical history to plan-etary science. Based on the overwhelmingly posi-tive response to the private performance for San Jacinto College (S.J.C.), the Symphony and S.J.C. have agreed to make similar concerts a regular feature of its annual programs.

In an effort to pay homage to the British origin of the composition and further indulge international audiences in the sounds and innovation of our great orchestra, an eight-concert tour of the United Kingdom will be presented in October 2010. The tour will begin with the international premier of The Planets—An HD Odyssey in Birmingham, where Holst himself premiered The Planets suite in 1918.

Volunteers.....................

Houston Symphony volunteers represent groups including the Houston Symphony League and Houston Symphony League – Bay Area, com-munity philanthropic groups and corporate and individual volunteers. Their love of music and commitment to sharing that passion is evident through the demonstration of their expertise in a variety of ways: as trustees, fundraising event chairs, chorus members, docents for music education programs and activity coordinators, among others.

Volunteers help with the production of some of Houston’s most successful fundraisers to build camaraderie and keep costs low.

The Houston Symphony is always look-ing for ways to involve interested individuals in its many programs and greatly appreciates the contribution of time and enthusiasm given by our volunteer family.

^ The symphony’s Junior Patron program receives considerable support from volunteers and the Houston Symphony League.

Artistic excellence, strong leadership, robust ticket sales and growing philanthropic support are vital, but they alone cannot guarantee the Houston Symphony’s future. To do so, its endowment must be increased. My Houston, My Symphony: Campaign for a Sound Future has two major goals: add $60 million to the Symphony’s endowment and raise $15 million in working capital. We are proud to recognize those who have already made commitments to this campaign and invite others to join them as we build an artistically and financially sound Houston Symphony.
