The Fred Douglas Foundation presented the Ninth Annual Humanitarian Awards on May 9th at Canad Inns Polo Park in Winnipeg. The evening was themed “Chez Fred Douglas” com- plete with French-fashion cuisine for dinner, and accordian music. A mime and a caricature artist were also on hand for the final touch. Award Recipients are Les Slingsby (The Love of Caring Award), Joyce Klassen (The Art of Caring Award), and Candace Maxymowich, Kayla Chan, Kenzie Bilyk and Tanishq Verma (The Learning by Caring Award). T he 5th Annual A&O Seniors Housing &Lifestyles Expo held Friday, May 4 atthe Victoria Inn was a huge success.

The attendance surpassed the first show withover 900 people in attendance. The entertain-ment from the West End Belly Dancers was a

visual delight, the comedy show provided byRuth Wiebe was well received and the rest ofthe presentations were well attended. The lineof people waiting to enter the show at 10 a.m.was impressive and led out into the main lobby

Melanie Wight, MLA for Burrowsgave greetings and stressed the sig-nificance of volunteers. She revealed

stats that show 55 percent of thoseover 50 years of age in Manitobavolunteer, “Truly enhancing thequality of life for seniors.” Sheadds, “Noah’s Ark was built by vol-unteers. The Titanic was built byprofessionals.”

The organizing committee for thisevent consisted of. Mike Pagtakhan,

Lorri Apps, Paul Peters Derry andRebecca Reykdal.

The Fred Douglas Society hasbeen providing seniors with safe,affordable residential options thatmeet their individual needs, for over40 years.

Les SlingsbyWinnipeg, MBThe Love of Caring AwardLes is an advocate for communityseniors helping them through themaze of the Home Care System andencourages them to seek out pro-grams and services available to helpthem live independently. He dedi-cated many years to the Keewatin/Inkster Neighbourhood ResourceCouncil helping develop many oftheir core programs. Les played akey role in establishing the Call-MeProgram, the first of its kind inManitoba.

Candace MaxymowichVita, MBThe Learning By Caring AwardCandace is attending university tobecome a psychiatric nurse. She hasaccumulated approximately 1300volunteer hours at the WhisperingPines Lodge, a personal care home forseniors. She has also volunteered innumerous organizations in her com-munity and throughout the province,and beyond. She began volunteeringat the Shady Oaks Lodge in 2004 asa companion to an elderly resident.She is inspired by the AlzheimerSociety’s Touch Quilt Project whichhelps those living with dementia.

Kenzie BilykOakbank, MBThe Learning By Caring AwardKenzie volunteers at Kin PlacePersonal Care Home in Oakbank,Manitoba, where she is involved infacilitating activities, beautifying theenvironment and having personalinteraction with the residents.. Shedemonstrates a natural gift of caring.She helps collect food for ChristmasHampers, referees volleyball gamesand is involved in her church. ■
