ADVICE FOR THOSE SEEKING A CAREER WITH OUR ARMY?There are many opportunities in Our Army and it is up to the individual to take on the challenge. Where there is no country, there is no home. That is why defence is important. Be part of it and make a difference.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE DEMANDS FROM YOUR WORK AND FAMILY?I am really happy to have the full support of my family, which helps me excel in my work. I will always be there to give advice and a listening ear to my children and loved ones, but I do enforce a strict routine at home. To ensure quality family bonding time, family dinners on Saturday are mandatory.
A WOMAN OF MANY FIRSTS
There are many opportunities in Our Army and it
is up to the individual to take on the challenge.
Where there is no country, there is no home. That
is why defence is important. Be part of it and
make a difference. CWO JENNIFER TAN
Chief Warrant Ofcer (CWO) Jennifer Tan, the rst female CWO, rst joined the SAF as a Human Resource administrator in 1984. Since then, she has become the rst woman to take on the roles of Regimental Sergeant Major of 46th Singapore Armoured Regiment and Parade Regimental Sergeant Major of National Day Parade 2011. Other roles include Brigade Sergeant Major of 4th Singapore Armoured Brigade, and Division Sergeant Major of 2nd People’s Defence Force Command. She is currently the Commanding Ofcer of Armour Combat Training Centre.
HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN SO FAR IN OUR ARMY?There were many unforgettable moments in Our Army. I was given many opportunities to travel overseas for courses and exercises, and to work with personnel from some of the best armies in the world. My proudest moment was taking charge of the parade segment during the 2011 National Day Celebrations. I will never forget that experience.

HOW HAS TAKING UP THE SCHOLARSHIP HELPED? I pursued a Bachelor's Degree (Liberal Arts in Psychology and Political Science) from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA, and a Master’s Degree in International Security from Massey University, New Zealand. The educational support I received – coupled with the many professional courses and training opportunities Our Army provides – has helped me mature and grow as an individual. It has also put me in good stead to take on command roles as a leader in the eld.
WHAT’S THE BEST PART ABOUT YOUR JOB?The best parts of the job are the opportunities to lead. It’s like no other, and found nowhere else. You are responsible for the mission of the unit, its operational readiness and the well-being of your soldiers. From the time you have taken the oath to be a commander, you are in charge. Everything that happens or does not happen is on your charge, and wholly your responsibility. You get to enjoy the autonomy and joyful ‘burden’ of making a difference to the lives of soldiers and Singapore’s national defence.
POWERED BY THE SCHOLARSHIP
Being a soldier is one of the noblest, bravest,
most honourable things one can do. It takes
soundness of character, fortitude, and a whole
lot of courage. SLTC VICKY WANG
Senior Lieutenant Colonel (SLTC) Vicky Wang joined Our Army looking forward to a meaningful career characterised by the esprit de corps of the Army. Since taking up the SAF Merit Scholarship, she has enjoyed opportunities to lead a battalion on the battleeld and to formulate strategies at the policy level as the head of the G1-Army Personnel Development Branch.

WHAT CAN SOMEONE EXPECT FROM A CAREER IN OUR ARMY?Everyone grows and develops in Our Army, regardless of gender. You will be trained to reach and expand your mental and physical bounds, and emerge all the better for it. However, you will never face challenges alone. From completing missions to planning policies, you will be working alongside like-minded comrades-in-arms. With every challenge I overcome, I grow and become more condent. Our Army has taught me that I can be more and do more than I can ever imagine.

HOW HAVE YOU DEVELOPED AS A PERSON SINCE JOINING OUR ARMY?Apart from organising large-scale events such as the National Day Parade, I aid in the development of Singapore's counter-terrorism competencies by training soldiers. My responsibilities also entail charting the long-term development of Singapore Combat Engineers' capabilities. The sheer scope of career experiences here has taught me a lot. Through these, I have learnt rst-hand that Our Army
WHAT MAKES OUR ARMY CULTURE STAND OUT?It’s the unity. As Aristotle said, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” This is especially true for Our Army. We rely on our fellow buddies to work professionally and prociently to reach any objective, forging the strongest of bonds in the process. Naturally, such camaraderie also extends beyond the ofce or battleeld – the rmest of friendships are formed here as well.
WHY SHOULD ONE JOIN OUR ARMY?Our Army lets you make a difference on many levels. There is a lot of responsibility that comes with the job as most of the time is spent leading people through training and operations. As people look up to you as their leader, you are entrusted to care for your soldier's well-being, morale and discipline. At its core, you will play a key role in safeguarding Singapore’s way of life.
FROM CORPORATE LADDER TO LARGER PURPOSE It’s the unity. The whole is greater than the sum
of its parts. This is especially true for Our Army.
CPT RYDIA LIANG
From working in a multinational corporation (MNC), Captain (CPT) Rydia Liang made a career switch to a job focused on a larger purpose – serving her country, and making a difference to people. HAS THIS CAREER ALWAYS BEEN YOUR GOAL?Denitely! I have always dreamed of a uniformed career since I was in my teens. I strongly believe that it was my calling to join Our Army, serve the nation, and wear the uniform with pride. SAF personnel are the epitome of discipline and purpose, putting the nation’s needs rst. I am a leader, trainer and warghter – and my kids are so proud of saying “Mummy is in the Army!”
HOW DOES OUR ARMY PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES?Our Army always strongly encourages us to develop both professionally and academically, providing many opportunities for us along the way. In my case, I was awarded the CLASS Sponsorship to continue my education.
There are many pathways to success here in the SAF. As we promote in rank and progress, our roles expand and we grow as leaders through professional leadership courses. Thanks to this, my journey here has seen me continuously improve and excel at every stage of my career. The working environment is supportive, encouraging and closely knit.

Continuous Learning and Academic Sponsorship Scheme (CLASS) Sponsorship recipient 2nd Warrant Ofcer (2WO) Asrena Bte Ayub’s role as a logistics supply supervisor is never deskbound. To keep things running, she’s always on the go. One moment, you could see her brieng the soldiers under her charge, and the next moment, you could see her on the eld or even deployed overseas to be in charge of logistics operations. Her career experience also includes plenty of academic and professional development opportunities that further empower her to be her best.
IN A NUTSHELL, WHAT’S YOUR WORK LIKE?It’s our job to make the impossible possible and my responsibility is to oversee logistical support. This means we have to be always ready to meet the requests of units, regardless of scope or timeline. My time is split between the ofce, stores and even in the eld. That said, it is certainly not just all about work. There are many aspects to the experience here. I participate in track and eld and air rie competitions as well. In fact, I have represented my unit in Army Shooting Meets for quite a few years!

valuable leadership, soldiering, and life-saving
skills to me. ME2 SHORINI DHURGHA
Military Expert (ME) 2 Shorini Dhurgha’s path thus far in Our Army has seen her going from a Diploma to a Degree, Singapore to Nepal, and a nurse to a soldier. Making a difference is what drives her. As a vocational training instructor, she defends Singapore’s way of life as part of a close-knit, people-rst team. Discover her journey and embark on your own career of purpose in Our Army.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE OUR ARMY OVER THE HEALTHCARE SECTOR?While my Nursing Diploma equipped me with the starting skills to be a staff nurse, I wanted an additional dimension to how I can make a difference. When I learnt more about the SAF Medical Corps and the medical Military Domain Experts Scheme (MDES), I was drawn to the opportunity to be actively involved in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions. After a few years, Our Army has helped me achieve one of my
greatest personal goals – obtaining my Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
WHAT MAKES PRACTISING YOUR PROFESSION IN OUR ARMY MEANINGFUL?The Medical Corps is the lifeline of the SAF, so it is critical that all Regulars, NSFs, and NSmen stay current with medical protocols and procedures. I contribute in my own way as an instructor, ensuring personnel are always ready to save lives. During my rst overseas deployment to Nepal for HADR efforts, we put our training to use in real life. It was a profound experience for me – one that reinforced my sense of purpose.
