AREA MARINA PROTETTA

IL VERDE CHE SI TUFFA NEL BLUL’istituzione di un’Area Marina Protetta dal fascinoso nome di “Regno di Nettuno” che si estende

tutt’intorno alle isole d’Ischia e Procida è il definitivo riconoscimento della specialità di questo

mare e pone questo eccezionale sito nel gotha dei posti d’eccellenza ambientale del pianeta.

Molte sono le ragioni che hanno imposto la legge che mira a proteggere e conservare integro

questo ambiente. Le famose pinete dell’isola d’Ischia si specchiano infatti in un mare ricco di

“biodiversità” che è quella speciale coincidenza che vede coesistere in uno spazio circoscritto

habitat estremamente diversi tra loro. Il fondale è infatti composto da tratti di roccia, sabbia,

fango, coralligeno, ecc. senza soluzione di continuità così che tutte le specie tipiche di ciascun

habitat convivono tra loro in una meravigliosa simbiosi funzionale. Vi sono inoltre estesi banchi

di posidonia tra i più belli del Mediterraneo che garantiscono un’eccezionale ossigenazione a

tutte le forme di vita esistenti. Lungo la costa nord dell’isola d’Ischia vi è poi il canyon

sottomarino detto “di Cuma” che, per uno speciale gioco di correnti, determina la convivenza di

tutte le sette specie di cetacei presenti nel Mediterraneo ed in particolare l’ultimo branco di

delfino comune esistente nel “mare nostrum”. Qui l’esperienza di un whale watching vale da

sola un viaggio. L’ampiezza dell’Area Marina ha consentito di non imporre regole

particolarmente rigorose così che al visitatore, oltre alla balneazione, al diporto nautico, alle

visite guidate ed al pescaturismo, sono consentiti anche lo snorkeling e le immersioni. Si è così

raggiunto l’obbiettivo di armonizzare le attività umane con le meraviglie ambientali con le quali

abbiamo la fortuna di convivere.

WHERE GREEN AND BLUE MEETThe creation of a Marine Protected Area around the islands of Ischia and Procida, intriguingly

named “The Kingdom of Neptune” (Regno di Nettuno), is the definitive recognition of just

how special these waters are and places this exceptional area among the key sites of natural

excellence around the planet. Many factors have inspired the laws that now aim to protect

and conserve the integrity of this environment. The famed pine woods of the island of Ischia

are reflected in a sea rich in “biodiversity” - that special coincidence whereby extremely

diverse habitats coexist within one locality. The seabed here is in fact composed of

uninterrupted tracts of rock, sand, mud, coral etc, so that all the species typical of each

habitat move between them in one splendidly functioning symbiosis. There are also extensive

beds of posidonia, among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean, that provide an

exceptional source of oxygen for all the forms of life present. Off the north coast of the island

of Ischia runs the undersea canyon of “Cuma” where, thanks to a particular confluence of

marine currents, all seven species of cetaceans present in the Mediterranean can be found, in

particular the last pod of short-beaked common dolphins in the “mare nostrum”. Here a

whale-watching experience alone is worth the journey. Thanks to its ample size, the

Protected Area has had to impose no especially- restrictive rules, so visitors may enjoy

snorkelling and diving as well as swimming, yachting and sailing, guided tours and fishing

excursions. In this way we have met our goal of harmonizing man’s activities with the

environmental marvels with which we have the good fortune to live.
