History of Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF)

The Congo virus was isolated in 1956 in Zaire. In 1969, the Crimean
virus was shown to be identical to the Congo virus.
Known geographical distribution today: Africa, Asia, Middle East, Eastern Europe

• 27 cases were reported throughout the Pakistan mainly contributing to (16) cases directly reported from Balochistan, KPK & Sindh (04 each) and Punjab (03).

• CCHF is a tick-borne viral haemorrhagic fever with case fatality near 30%
• RNA Virus - Nairovirus group of Bunyaviridae family
• Hyalomma tick is the vector and reservoir• Sheep, cattle, camels and other mammals are

• 1970 - The virus was first isolated from ticks from the Changa Manga forest, Lahore district, and of Hunza, Gilgit Agency
• 1976 - The first reported case and the first nosocomial human case occurred when a laparotomy was performed on a patient with abdominal pain, haematemesis
