Hot Dogs, Apple Pie, and Coon Dog Day

For most people hot dogs and apple pie are patriotic icons as

much as an American flag waving on the fourth of July. Saludians would include Coon Dog Day as an American icon and would forget that it's not a national holiday, just a Saluda holiday. This time of the year, all the talk

about town is about what guests are coming, what food to prepare,

purchasing tickets for the pancake breakfast, where we are going to park, who is going to be in the parade, who is entering the

5K/Fun Walk, what's the weather going to be like, and the buzz goes on and on. The town is staged for Coon Dog Day. American flags are waving from the poles, dedicated city

workers are mowing and mulching park areas and city streets, Pace Park pavers have been laid, a stage will be parked along Main Street, and a banner

will stretch across Main Street welcoming all to Saluda's annual

holiday. Even though this isn't a national holiday, in Saluda, it is a family reunion of sorts. For over five decades, summer folks and

visitors have enjoyed this fun-filled festival that is as American as apple pie to Saludians!

SUMMER SUNDAY

CONCERTS On Sunday, July 19 @ 7:00 PM, we are honored to welcome back Mac Arnold and Plate Full O' Blues. Mac Arnold's first band included James Brown on piano. Mac moved to Chicago and Muddy Waters hired him on the spot. He

toured and recorded with the

Muddy Waters Band and recorded

LPs with Otis Spann and John Lee Hooker. Mac moved to Los Angeles and produced Soul Train with his friend Don Cornelius. He

even played bass on the Sanford & Son television show when he wasn't playing bass for Otis Redding and B.B. King. He retired from show business to be an organic farmer. Mac is back with

his own band and now a third CD, building a new foundation in blues, soul and funk.

Admission for both shows is $15 per person in advance, $20 at the door and seating will be limited.

The performances starts at 7 PM. The doors open at 6 PM. A limited menu of pizzas and appetizers will be available from the time the doors open until the show starts with beverages and desserts available throughout the concerts.

Fresh Paint/ A Plein Air

Experience;

Oct. 22-24 Jim Carson, Saluda artist, will offer a painting workshop, "Fresh Paint/ A Plein Air Experience," on

Thursday - Saturday, Oct 22-24, in Saluda. This outdoor painting workshop will provide an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful colors and fresh air of a Western

North Carolina Fall, while addressing the painting

fundamentals of value, design, and temperature variety. There will also be an emphasis on bold and spontaneous brushwork. Participants will meet each morning at Jim's studio and

motorcade to that day's painting location. All locations will be easily accessible by car. There will be a demonstration and lecture by Jim on Thursday

morning, lots of one-on-one easel

time, and a general critique of the day's work at the end of each day. The workshop price, $350, includes a tasty lunch brought to the site each day by the Saluda Grade Café and wine at the first

day's critique. The workshop is open to all levels, from beginners to advanced. In the event of rain or cold, there is ample room to set up and paint in Jim's studio. A list of needed

supplies, as well as other information, will be furnished after registration.

new hits from Aaron's just released CD, "Tinderbox." The performance will be under the Pavilion at McCreery Park from

Brown Bag

Supplemental emergency bags of groceries will continue to be

distributed at Church of the Transfiguration, Saluda, to anyone

in need on the third Friday of the month. The upcoming date is July 17. The distribution of these

bags will take place between 3:00

p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Friday afternoons in the church parking lot located at 72 Charles Street in Saluda. This will be a "no questions asked" gift of hospitality to anyone in need.

Supplies may be limited so come early. Distribution will be first come first served until all available bags have been distributed.

Williams Hush Now, Baby is the story of how a little white girl climbed out of an uneasy childhood in the

segregated South...on the backbone of a black woman who loved her unabashedly. A host of

African-American women permeated Southern families. One of those stalwart women was Eva Aiken, a central figure in the author's life from her birth...until Eva staged a sit-in at the girl's wedding.

The story captures the glorious early years of the Low-country South Carolina family, then graphically depicts its unraveling. Eva holds them together. The

family and the country's parallel struggles converge. The author lives in bubble-wrap until Civil Rights issues escalate. This story is told without pathos and with graceful restraint-the Southern way.

consultant, author, and personal/professional coach, Williams draws on her experience and literary expertise to bring to light the untold story: that black women in the 60's were the unflinching heroes of our time.

She graduated from Queens University in Charlotte, taught English at the Citadel for 20 years, after earning her Masters in English at Duke University.

Williams lives in Mr. Pleasant, SC. You'll find her playing tennis, reading to her grandsons, or

sipping tea on her porch overlooking the water that brought so many African Americans to its shore....and

thinking of Eva.

Saluda History Depot

We invite you to

visit the depot and view the art of Bill and Anne

Jameson, our beginning of a railroad, the historic Saluda museum, and our retail shop. We have added new items, and if you have something that you would like to donate, please contact us. We want to make this museum

tell the story of Saluda from the beginning until now. We are fortunate to have the history of the steepest grade, the railroad,

and all the history of many people who have made this town so rich.

Our board members have been working hard and we are now glad to say that another new business will be opening in Suite C in July. Troy Sumner will be opening: "Baseball, Hot Dogs,

Apple Pie & Chevrolet" and will be opened six days a week. We are looking forward to having in the neighborhood. Thanks to all that came to the Shaggin' on Saluda, The Images

of America: Saluda book signing, and to everyone that has made donations to this depot venture. Thanks also to the volunteers that will be at the depot during hours of operations. We are all

committed to making this museum one that we will all be proud to have in Saluda. Remember to purchase your golf cart raffle ticket for $25; drawing will be September 12 at

the Charlie Ward Memorial BBQ. The Saluda Historic Depot will be

open Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm throughout the summer.

Lisa Bishop and her husband, John were thinking of a way to contribute to the effort to raise funds for the purchase of the

Saluda Historic Depot when

realizing it was already parked outside their door. "We have seen all the time and dedication the board members of the depot are giving to raising money for the purchase of the Saluda Historic

Depot and we wanted to help. We see this as a win-win for the purchase of the depot and the citizens of Saluda by having a chance to win a street-legal golf cart, and for our business," says

Lisa. The couple owns Affordable Golf Carts in Saluda at 24 W Main

Street, which are street ready (after getting proper permits from the city) and priced right to be

affordable to Saluda citizens. After the first 100 tickets are sold, then proceeds for selling the raffle tickets will go directly to the Saluda Historic Depot.

Tickets will be on sale at Thompson's Store/Ward's Grill, Duck Alley, and the depot which is open every Saturday and

Sunday from 12pm to 4pm. The raffle drawing will be held at the annual Charlie Ward Memorial BBQ on Saturday, September 12, 2015 held at McCreery Park in Saluda.

Tree City USA-

Preservation How do we get rid of the various kinds of vines that

climb our tree trunks, even extending onto lower limbs? The subject was discussed at the May meeting of Saluda's Tree City USA. The most frequently used method

is to cut the vines around the circumference of the trunk while standing on the ground. Care must be taken, however, to avoid cutting into the tree trunk. This method permits the vines to die and eventually to fall away from

the trunk.

Why be concerned about vines on tree limbs? They do not kill the tree, but the added weight can cause breakage in storms and

wind. Tress have been known to be uprooted from the added weight. Meetings are scheduled regularly the fourth Thursday each month at Saluda Library upstairs at

5:30pm. All interested are welcome. For more information, call Ruth at

The Twin Lakes crew has been super busy getting the lake ready. It would be a shame not to take advantage of their endeavors.

Work done on the Swimming Lake are as follows: Pavilion and benches have been scraped primed and painted. A new pump has been installed in the

bathhouse. New PEC plumbing has replaced the old PVC system

in the bathhouse. Lake edge growth has been trimmed, raked and removed. Water from the access road has been rerouted to the stream to prevent flooding of the parking area.

was completed. We were legally restricted not to begin work until after May 4 by the Army Corp of Engineers permit we received as

well as State Fish and Wildlife restrictions in April due to rules on disturbing fish breeding habitat. The work was completed in 37 days. The fishing lake is filling up as we speak. The new pipe is in place and the old pipe

system is filled with concrete and sealed shut. Grass is in place in disturbed soil areas as well as sod in the new emergency spillway. All trees growing in the lake and on the dam faces have been

removed and brush on the lake side perimeter has been cut and removed. We thank our

subcontractors for their help and our paid workers for their efforts and our 3 volunteers Nancy Barnett, Don Clapp, and John

Morgan. Thanks most to Dave Prudhomme who tirelessly led this project to completion and to Jim Swiatowicz, our manager, for his concern in getting the job done in the best possible manner in the best possible way.

Walks in the Woods For our monthly first and third Sunday walks, meet at the Saluda Library parking lot at 2:00 to

carpool to the trail head. These

0364. July 5 - This is a mystery walk destination. We will find a bit of water for cooling your heels and stay away from poison ivy, snakes and dangerous rocks.

July 19 - Saluda Nature Park SCLT will lead walkers on a 1-2 mile moderate tour of the city park. The route connects Greenville Street to Chestnut

Street and then loops back out. Sections within the park wind along the stream, up the hillsides, and climb even further up (strenuous) to the grand overlook on Judd's Peak. Remnants of old

houses and the former city dump are visible. Come see how some creative thinking, ingenuity and effort has transformed a forgotten

area into a precious park. Moody Property What is it and where is it? Come join the fun and find out. Volunteer work/play days are the 2nd and the 4th Tuesdays and the

1st and 3rd Saturdays. Meet at 10am at the property, located at the new driveway off 176 toward Hendersonville. Bring a sack lunch. John Savage is heading up the Moody work days.

3632. Victory over Kudzu The goats are back at the Water

Treatment plant along Pearson Falls Road. This year SCLT is partnering with the City of Saluda to keep the invasive species from overtaking the city property along this road. The good news is that after the goats have worked this

area for the last two years, the kudzu is mostly gone; now they are working on the Japanese Knot Weed and Multiflora Rose.

Efforts to control kudzu at Judd's

Peak and Saluda Nature Park are succeeding as evidenced by the appearance of native milkweed, a host plant for Monarch butterflies. Plans are to replace the invasive kudzu with other native pollinator plants, native

grasses and blueberries this fall. If you would like to help remove the kudzu, we are meeting at Judd's Peak on Thursdays at 9 am. Tools will be provided, but you may want to bring a kneeling pad or low stool. Financial

be in the alley by M.A. Pace General Store and will be the location of a Blue Ridge National

Heritage Area Interpretation Sign and future public restrooms. $40 each, payable to City of

a jingly hip scarf, and start MOVING. This is hands down the most fun you will ever have exercising. Tribal Bellydance is an American hybrid

improvisational style blending many ancient dance traditions

into a fusion of traditional Middle Eastern dance with folkloric dance movements from India, Central Asia, North Africa, and Spain. It is

a multi-generational group of women dancing in unison with no pre-set choreography and using a lead and follow vocabulary of moves and cues, a form of non-verbal communication. The ethnically inspired costumes allow

us to re-visit that childlike joy of playing dress-ups. Earthy and grounded, it is about women dancing as a tribe for the pure joy of it, invoking an ancient Muse.

Community College taught by Jo Rytter, a Certified Kripalu Movement Instructor. There are 6 sessions to choose from and they are listed on pg. 19 of the

Depot on Coon Dog Day!

Images of America: Saluda has been released! Come

by the Saluda Historic Depot on Coon Dog Day to get a copy. Cindy Stephenson Tuttle and

Mary Ann Hester with the Historic Saluda Committee have co-

authored a book about Saluda that is included in the Images of America book

series, through Arcadia Publishing Company. Featured are 220 images of Saluda and its people, many of which have never been

seen outside of the families that shared them. Included with each picture are details of Saluda's rich and fascinating history. A special thank you goes out to all that shared their photographs, memories and family lore because

without YOU this book would never have come to fruition. Books are available at Saluda City Hall, the Saluda Historic Depot and various retailers around town.

Oral History Film Project Continues

The HSC continues to work with

the Polk County Film Initiative (PCFI) to film and produce the second oral history DVD, Saluda's

Blue Ridge Music Traditions. A special thank you goes out to James Metcalf and the Colt Creek Band for their recent

participation. Filmed by the old wood stove in the MA Pace Store, James and the band played some favorite folk, gospel and bluegrass tunes. James relayed stories about his great grandmother Salena Middleton

Metcalf who in 1934, was visited by John Jacob Niles, known as the Father of the Modern Folk Movement, who spent his

adulthood searching for the most well-loved songs of the Southern Appalachia. During his visit, Salena sang The Murdered Brother for him, which he documented in his book The Ballad Book of John Jacob Niles.

Since this is also Leon Morgan's great grandmother, he joined James in the storytelling. James also featured a song by Adger Pace with family ties to Saluda and who either penned or helped

to write over 3,500 gospel songs. Film footage was also captured of the Saluda Grade String Band as

they helped kick-off the recent book launch party for Images of America: Saluda. Film shoots are scheduled in Saluda throughout

the summer in order to adequately showcase the rich and diverse blend of musical variations that spun off from roots based or folk music that influenced Saluda's musical tastes yesterday and today. This film, to

be released in the fall of 2015, will not only appeal to Saluda residents but will be of interest to anyone who has an appreciation for the musical heritage of the

North Carolina Blue Ridge

mountains and foothills. Funding is being provided by a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation through the Saluda Community Fund and by funds raised through proceeds from past projects of the Historic

Saluda Committee (HSC).

Visit Preview Museum in Historic Depot on Coon Dog Day!

The Historic Saluda Committee is

a partner in the initiative to purchase and develop the Saluda

train depot and is working with the Saluda Historic Depot board to open a historical museum. The HSC has been granted a secure space in the Saluda Public Library

to store historical documents and artifacts. Donations of originals or copies of vintage photographs, historical artifacts, documents, deeds, art, books, quilts, antiques, train memorabilia or

other relevant items of historic interest that are in good condition are being accepted. If you don't want to part with your family

Day in Suite C at the Saluda Historic Depot. Owner, Troy Sumner says that the name

reflects the old advertising slogan of the 50's and 60's. The store will offer vintage and present day sports cards,

"certified autographed" cards, autographed baseballs, baseball

bats, and gloves of sports stars, past and present. A large collection of football and basketball items will also be part of the inventory. Jerseys, hats, old magazines and books will be available also.

Later, after the retail is operational, he will serve hot dogs, chips, apple pie, and soft drinks and other quick snack

items. As far as the "Chevrolet" part of the name, Troy will stock die cast models, some NASCAR items, and other auto related nostalgia items.

Over our eight years

as the owners and hosts of

Saluda's premier Victorian Bed and Breakfast, we have learned to expect certain behavior from our guests. The majority of the telephone inquiries we receive on a daily basis are usually along the

lines of, "What are your rates?" Or, "What will you serve for breakfast?"

Recently, we have been getting a different kind of caller: "Good morning, The Oaks Bed and

Breakfast," is our customary and cheerful greeting. "Is your inn

haunted?" the voice at the other end will question with a gentle curiosity. Our standard response is to answer their question, with another question, "Do you need it

to be?" Truth be told, there have been the occasional unexplained phenomenon since having taken possession of The Oaks Bed and

Breakfast in 2007 - the unexpected flash of light (reflected from a passing car), or a repetitious tapping (the limb of

a tree thumping against the house), or the spiced aroma of pipe tobacco (unexplained).

We understand that we have had occasional guests that possess a heightened sensitivity to such paranormal activity and they will share their experiences with other guests over breakfast. As Donna

and I have spent more time in

this house than most, we find these stories fascinating. If there is a paranormal presence

Threads in Saluda

Doris Ulmann (1882-1934) was an American photographer, best

known for her dignified portraits of the people of Appalachia, particularly craftsmen and musicians. After becoming a

professional photographer, she documented rural people throughout the South, particularly

mountaineers of the Southern Highlands as well as the Gullahs of the Sea Islands. She was working in Asheville almost up to her death in August. Her collection of photography is housed in the University of

Oregon libraries. One of her photographs, probably taken around 1931 - 1933, shows long-time Saluda residents Edward (Ned) and Sarah Owen

Anderson who were weavers of hand-hooked rugs. At the time of the photo the Andersons were living in Mars Hill, NC. Later they moved to Saluda where they operated a small dairy farm on Warrior Mountain for a few years,

and several of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren still reside in our community. One of their sons, Eugene, recently passed away on June 11, 2015, leaving one surviving sibling, Paul of Darlington, SC.

John Owen Anderson, the eldest

son from this family of five boys and three girls, and my oldest sister Ruth were married in 1943 in Spartanburg after riding a

passenger train from Saluda along with my mother and one other person as witnesses. The newlyweds moved to Groton, Connecticut where John served as a submariner. After being released from service at the end

of World War all, John rarely spoke about his sub being subjected to depth charges by Nazis wolf packs along with the

associated terror. Following his military discharge the couple returned to Saluda and lived for several years in a very small log cabin without electricity or running water, located just

down the valley from the main Anderson house. Memories of spending nights with them on occasion as a 6- and 7-year-old are still fairly vivid. Activities such as playing or reading by kerosene

lanterns and going to the nearby spring to retrieve a jug of fresh milk from the ice-cold water still

remain fond memories. Another pioneering hooked-rug weaver having local ties was Mrs.

Lillian Mills Mosseller, a descendant of the famous Ambrose Mills who was hanged after the Battle of King's Mountain for siding with the British. She was also the niece of Columbus Mills for whom Polk County's seat

of government got its name. For many years she worked in concert with her artist son Ronald, a resident of Tryon, to

create masterpieces. Some of

their rugs were placed in such prominent places as the Hall of the First Ladies at the Smithsonian Institution, the dining room of the Virginia Governor's Mansion, the Little White House in Warm Springs,

Georgia, and the reception room of WBTV in Charlotte. From the late '40s to the very early '50s Mrs. Mosseller and son had their rug operation in the building adjoining the west side of

what is now called Pace Park. My

mother worked for them in 1950 - 1951 as a part-time rug clipper before the business was moved to Tryon. Two of the rugs that she helped produce have been passed

down to me, and while used in our home as everyday rugs, still show very little wear and tear. In 1993 a group of thirteen highly talented country and western

artists paid tribute to the popular country rock group of the '70s know as The Eagles by recording on a new CD their own versions of

hit songs first made popular by the group. Songs like Take It Easy, Peaceful Easy Feelings, Heartache Tonight, Take It To The Limit, Tequila Sunrise, Best of My Love, and Lying Eyes--along with six of their other country-rock

hits--were re-vocalized by equally famous names such as Travis Tritt, Little Texas, John Anderson, Clint Black, Suzy Bogguss, Vince Gill, Diamond Rio, Trisha Yearwood, Billy Dean, Tanya

Tucker, Brooks and Dunn, and Lorrie Morgan.

The title of the

CD was Common Thread - Son

gs of the Eagles. Quite interestingly, the cover photo used on the CD booklet is the same one of the Andersons that I referenced

earlier in this article, taken from

the Ulmann Collection. Finally, it should be noted that Hub Middleton was briefly employed by the Mossellers during their time of operation in Saluda.

What was once my grandparent

s' farm still sits at the intersection of Esseola Drive and the Howard Gap Road.

During my childhood, the house

sat up on a hillside surrounded by hemlocks, huge hardwood trees and an abundance of boxwoods

and a multitude of flowers. The house, built sometime in the 1800's, sits on a foundation of stone that my grandmother claimed came from the first post office in Saluda. An old cabin on the property, turned into a pack

house, was said to be older than the house itself, which is not surprising since the original road

bed for the Howard Gap Road cuts through the pasture. As a child, the most exciting thing about traveling to Saluda was the

anticipation as we drove up from Charlotte, especially once we got on Hwy 176 and started climbing the mountain. My dad loved to take the curves with swift precision, all the while

proclaiming his mountain heritage and cursing those without such. Not long after topping the mountain, we'd turn into my grandparents' driveway, lined with white rock and bordered by a

white cross buck fence and apple

trees. The house always smelled musty and old. It was packed with antiques and wreaked of the past. My dad's boyhood room was one of two rooms located upstairs. What a joy it was to get to sleep in that beaded board

room, still full of his books and momentos from childhood. Now I must admit, I had a concern

about that room. You see there was a small door with a wooden latch that opened into an attic room with very low ceilings. It

was full of old trunks, clothes, furniture, and oh, let's not forget the fairies. You see, I loved to stay in that room as long as my parents were across the hall because late at night the fairies pushed that door open and came

out to play. My dad's bedroom window looked out across the mountains. In the summer the window was usually open to catch the gentle breezes. I loved to listen for the silence, especially at

night, so pure my ears would ring. The only interruptions were the occasional whippoorwill or the

gentle tinkle of a cow bell. It was actually so quiet that I could sometimes hear the fairies as they rustled about as I lay in bed

imagining that attic door slowing opening all by itself. The farm is still there, but the mountain behind it is forever altered by the presence of I-26 and so is the purity of the silence.

However, the wonderful memories of visiting my grandparents, Raymond and Kathleen Stephenson, during the summers, holidays and especially

at Christmastime have remained

pure and full of enchantment. My dad, Joe Stephenson, loved Saluda. He loved to take me on long hikes all over the hills and hollers of my grandparents' farm, and though my dad has long since passed, Saluda will always

be our special place. When asked to write this article, I was told to tie in the book I recently co-authored, Images of America: Saluda. It sort of seems like destiny that this book project

was put in my lap or perhaps it

could be described as a responsibility. My grandmother made sure that I had a basic understanding of her side of the family tree. I sensed early on she

was a major link to some of Saluda's oldest families, though she never quite put it that way. She was more concerned that I know which side of the Pace family tree our branch was on,

though we descended from the original Paces that arrived in Paces Gap in the very earliest days, like all the other Paces from

Saluda. When Saluda, N.C. One Hundred Years 1881-1981 by Anne Osborne and Charlene Pace came out in print, she sat with me as I took a pencil and put notations by our family members'

pictures as she explained how we were related to them. She was quick to point out that she provided many pictures for the book because her father, OB Garren, was a professional

photographer who took many of the earliest photos of Saluda. Her grandparents, Ransom Woodruff

Pace (not to be confused with the one who had 29 children) and Emily Gilbert Pace, operated the Pace House, which once sat on

the old drover's trail, where Autumn Care now sits. Ransom's parents, Moses and Margaret Barclay Pace operated it before him. Moses was the son of Burrell Pope Pace who is buried in the oldest grave in the old Mountain

Page Cemetery with 1816 as a date of death. It was Robert Pace who filled in the details of my grandfather's

side of the family. Since my

grandfather died when I was very young, the information had been a little sketchy. However, since Robert and my grandfather were first cousins on the Guice side of the family, he provided me with extensive information that

confirmed that Peter Guice, for whom the Green River Bridge is named, is my fourth great grandfather. I've also confirmed that those tree roots wrapped around more than one family on the Saluda tree. Surnames my

grandmother had only hinted at

have been confirmed, including Heatherly, Morris, Justice, Corn, Woodruff, McMinn and many more names with ties to Western NC. Though not surprising, more

than a few times the ole family tree branches crossed on the Pace side. None of the surviving members of my more immediate family live in

Saluda today, though my husband and daughter have come to love the place almost as much as I do. For now, I don't have the

pleasure of living there full-time but am very fortunate to be able to be there part-time. Our house turned one-hundred years old this year and Robert Pace once told me folks used to call it the "orange box" because it was built

by summer people from Florida. The William Edgerton family lived there the longest in more recent years, and no, we aren't related to them, but they were family friends, which is just fine by me.

One thing hasn't changed though; the fairies have set up residence at our house, though this time in

a nearby tree. When it's really quiet at night, they rustle about, just to let me know they're still around.
