4 2013 ANNUAL REPORT

It gives me great pleasure to report that the Hospitals of Regina Foundation (HRF) exceeded expectations in 2013, raising over $12 million, thanks to the very generous support of Saskatchewan individuals, businesses and organizations who believe in the importance of having great medical care available, close to home.

This year, our donors helped equip Regina’s hospitals with leading-edge diagnostic equipment, which allows our doctors to

accurately identify a diagnosis and determine the best course of treatment. This includes a state-of-the-art CT scanner for the Pasqua Hospital, upgrading our Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine at the Regina General Hospital, and a gamma camera.

The purchase of three new mobile C-arm X-Ray machines enables surgeons to treat more people, more effectively and in a timely manner.

In addition, the heartfelt contributions of our community will also allow Regina’s hospitals to undertake facility upgrades, provide continuing education for staff, and pursue investments in research to further improve our medical care in the future.

I’d also like to extend my appreciation to Judy Davis, HRF’s President and CEO, who will be moving on in 2014. Judy’s passion to improve healthcare has inspired trust and steadfast partnership from our community. Thank you for your 18 years of dedication, integrity and leadership.

On behalf of the Board, I extend a sincere thank you to each of our donors. Your contributions will leave a legacy of improved healthcare for every southern Saskatchewan resident. Thank you so very much.

Sincerely,

Tom NewtonVolunteer Chair, Board of DirectorsHospitals of Regina Foundation

Message fROm ThE cEO

As we close the books on 2013, I reflect with pride on the fact that our community’s partnership with the Hospitals of Regina Foundation (HRF) generated over $12 million this year.

This outstanding generosity has grown over HRF’s 27-year lifespan. Although Saskatchewan residents have always been aware that healthcare is a critical component of our lives, HRF has helped them understand that it is complex, challenging and expensive.

We invited our community to have their say about these challenges, and work collaboratively together to build excellence in our region’s healthcare. Overwhelmingly, the residents of this province accepted our invitation.

I have been honoured to be a part of HRF’s important work for the past 18 years, with the last 10 as its CEO. On a personal note, I will be moving on, at the end of 2014. I feel so fortunate to have a career that has been endlessly rewarding.

I feel honoured to have been surrounded by truly compassionate and talented people: HRF’s committed volunteer Board of Directors, our passionate and excellent staff, and most of all, our donors whose commitment to HRF has helped to transform healthcare in southern Saskatchewan. These HRF ambassadors will be able to offer the incoming CEO tremendous guidance during their transition period.

I appreciate the tireless and dedicated efforts of our volunteer Board of Directors, led by Volunteer Chair Tom Newton, Vice President and General Manager of Rawlco Radio.

Most of all, I want to thank every individual, organization and business that has so generously donated their time and dollars. Your donations are gifts of good health, and save lives every day. To you, dear donors, my gratitude is boundless.

I look forward to seeing the evolution of HRF. I know it will continue to push the limits, seek out new challenges and remain a charity close to hearts and minds across Saskatchewan.

With my warmest gratitude,

Judy Davis, CFREPresident & CEOHospitals of Regina Foundation

72013 ANNUAL REPORT

On a snowy October day in 2008, the lives of Wynyard family Amanda and Daryl Koch and their boys Carter and Dawson changed forever: their van was hit head-on by a heavy truck that veered into their lane. Each one of them ended up on a different floor of the Regina General Hospital (RGH).

Amanda’s shattered arm was reconstructed with pins and wire. Daryl’s left hip and both legs were crushed and required several surgeries; he spent months at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre (WRC), re-learning how to walk and perform daily tasks.

Six-year-old Carter and eight-year-old Dawson had been in the back seat. While the seatbelts prevented their heads from hitting the van’s roof, the belts also held them so fast to their seats that their spines unnaturally stretched. Carter spent 3½ months in a full-body cast to heal his vertebrae and spinal cord.

Dawson’s seatbelt caused massive damage to his internal organs and he required surgical fusion of his spine and neck, followed by months at WRC. Now 13, Dawson remains paralyzed from the waist down.

The equipment that was used on all of the Kochs was a mobile C-arm – a vital tool in the operating room that enables surgeons to take x-rays of a patient during surgery. Amanda says, “the C-arm was essential in fixing my crushed arm, my husband’s shattered legs and hips, Dawson’s internal and spinal injuries and Carter’s stretched spine.”

Someone who knows the importance of this equipment is Dr. Alan Beggs, an orthopedic spine surgeon and one of Dawson’s doctors. Dr. Beggs remarks, “nowdays, a mobile C-arm is just as important for surgery as a scalpel is. They are highly sought after items among surgeons.” In fact, mobile C-arms are required for 95% of the surgeries Dr. Beggs performs.

Last year, the C-arms in use were outdated and unable to keep up with the demand, so the HRF committed to raising $570,000.

Recognizing the critical need for this equipment, the Watson family of Watson Companies made a lead donation of $284,000. This donation, along with funds raised from additional generous donors enabled the Foundation to purchase three C-arms – two for the RGH and one for the Pasqua Hospital.

Thanks to the kindness of our donors, our doctors have the best equipment available to help patients and their families across southern Saskatchewan like the Kochs when they need it the most.

“Donations to the Hospitals of Regina Foundation open up worlds for others like Dawson.” ~ Amanda Koch

“The new C-arms are allowing our surgeons to perform more operations at the same time, rather than forcing surgeons to put their procedures on hold until a C-arm becomes available.”

Raising funds to help our hospitals provide innovative and leading healthcare is the HRF’s reason for being. Every year, on behalf of its donors, HRF invests in new equipment, education and research that, together, give our medical professionals the ability to improve – and at times, revolutionize – patient care. In 2013, HRF gave donors an opportunity to support such innovation through an exciting new research initiative: The Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) trial.

Led by Interventional Radiologists, Dr. Patanjali Chaturvedi and Dr. Ahmed Farooq, the PAE trial is the first of its kind in Canada. PAE is a safe and effective procedure that reduces enlargement of the prostate gland – also known as Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH). The two-year trial is focused on treating 50 patients and recording the data to continue the research and development of PAE.

Prostate enlargement can significantly affect quality of life. It leads to urinary obstruction resulting in urinary frequency, urgency and

incontinence. Progressive prostate enlargement can even lead to urine stasis, urinary tract infection and bladder stone formation. These infections can be life-threatening, especially when untreated. More than 50% of men age 50 years and older will have BPH with the number going up to 90% by 80 years of age.

The PAE treatment will offer patients many benefits:

• It is a minimally invasive procedure with minimal or no pain.

• There is no need for post treatment hospitalization.

• Patients will no longer require medication.

Thanks to our donors, these Regina doctors are on the brink of revolutionizing care for BPH patients across Canada and right here at home. To date, the results have been very encouraging and both doctors look forward to year two of the trial.

Regina is the first and only centre in Canada offering treatment for enlargement of the prostate gland through the donor-funded Prostate Artery Embolization trial.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) continues to be in high demand. This piece of equipment helps medical professionals diagnose a wide variety of health issues by scanning areas of the body and delivering high-quality, detailed images.

Doctors and technologists make it a priority to keep up to date with changing technology in their field; this allows them to take an active role in patient care advocacy. It was brought to HRF’s attention that the current state of cardiac MRI technology was insufficient for some of the more complicated cases.

“The need for a system upgrade was identified when the MRI team was scanning a potential heart transplant candidate to identify the cause of the patient’s failing heart. Unfortunately, the patient was only able to lie flat for a few minutes and could not hold his breath long enough to obtain high quality images,” explains Radiologist, Dr. Greg Kraushaar.

Before the upgrade, heart imaging required cardiac patients to hold their breath at times in order for the technologists to obtain clear images, which “could be problematic for both the patient and the technologist,” explains

Todd Ramsay, MRI Supervisor. As a result, the MRI was sometimes unable to provide further information about the patient’s heart.

The upgrade means higher quality images which in turn improve diagnostic confidence and accuracy. “This upgrade will definitely better help patients as it provides the MRI with more sophisticated technology,” says Todd.

Also, the upgrade to the MRI Unit has significantly increased the speed with which the machine functions; technologists can now scan 30% more cardiac patients. This will help to make optimal use of limited MRI resources. A further benefit is that the upgrade is not limited to cardiac patients, but benefits all patients receiving body imaging, muscular skeletal and central nervous system scans.

The upgrades have been purchased thanks to the HRF’s MRI Endowment Fund. This fund supports MRI equipment upgrades in keeping pace with rapidly changing technology. The donations that accumulate in an endowment fund are prudently invested to generate earnings. Each year, a portion of the earnings are used to support MRI priorities in Regina’s hospitals.

“The need for a system upgrade was identified when the MRI team was scanning a potential heart transplant candidate to identify the underlying cause of the patient’s failing heart. Unfortunately, the patient was only able to lie flat for a few minutes and could not hold his breath long enough to obtain high quality images.”

Message fROm ThE REgiNA qU'APPELLE hEALTh REgiON

Reflecting upon the Hospitals of Regina Foundation’s (HRF) accomplishments in 2013, I am struck by the tremendous impact its donors have on people across southern Saskatchewan and beyond, who use the services of the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region. From tiny, fragile newborns to those fighting cancer, to seniors with heart disease and arthritis, many people have been helped through the generous donations of others.

Members of our community are getting excellent and timely care, thanks to new medical technologies our hospitals have acquired, thanks to the generosity of HRF donors.

HRF also raised the funds to underwrite a critical research project. We are running a Prostate Artery Embolization Trial, a first in Canada. This promises exciting advances in the diagnosis and treatment of men with enlarged prostate glands.

When we, as a community invest in our own healthcare, our hospitals are better able to attract and retain talented medical professionals. As a result, patients and their families can trust in us to deliver the best care, and peace of mind.

Over the past 27 years, HRF’s dedication and vision has paved the way for individuals, businesses and organizations to contribute more than $140 million, and over $12 million in 2013 alone.

HRF’s work has been driven by the passion and dedication of Judy Davis. At the end of 2014, we will see Judy move on from the Foundation. She has worked as HRF’s CEO for the past 10 years, and for HRF for a total of 18 years. Her tireless efforts have resonated across the entire Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region. She developed

steady, long-term support that has helped Regina’s hospitals provide excellent care to our community members, when they need it the most. Judy, you have our most sincere gratitude, and I wish you all the best in this new phase of your life.

Finally, my heartfelt thanks go to HRF’s donors across the province. Your generosity has allowed us to transform healthcare in southern Saskatchewan. We look forward to your continued support as we work together to provide safe, timely, quality care to the people we serve!

Sincerely,

Keith Dewar President and Chief Executive OfficerRegina Qu’Appelle Health Region
