“We accept a maximum of onesuitcase per person, per storage upto one month, and an optionalservice of doing their laundry untiltheir return,” said Bryan. Standardlaundry rates apply in this case.

According to Bryan, the hotel,which gets a lot of local business, ismoving with the times and the trends.

“Our guests’ comment cardshelped us to put these things inplace,” he revealed.

TRIPLE MILES

The hotel now has triple miles forevery minimum three nights spent,American Airlines Advantage mem-ber passengers will benefit from theprogramme, which ends in March.

The birth of the new servicescomes with a massive refurbishing ofseveral of the hotel’s rooms.

“We took out some of the bal-conies, extending some of the rooms,and placed completely new modern

fixtures in the rooms,” said Bryan,adding that the suites with kitchenswere redone and the entire windowpanelling was soundproofed.

The entire lobby at the hotel,which has become one of Kingston’sfavourites, was completelyrevamped, taking on a more modern look and feel.

Courtleigh is, in fact, the onlyhotel of its kind in the capital citythat boasts two executive officesuites “where you have a work deskwith a computer station, copier,scanner and fax”, he noted.

Meetings can be facilitated inthat suite, he pointed out.

A veteran in the industry, Bryansaid Kingston was experiencing arebirth.

“We are seeing more business;there is increased airlift, and thecity is getting good publicity.”

The Courtleigh is also seeingdiversity among its guests, withmany coming to discover the city.

TAGGED THE gem of allluxury suites, the PrincessRoyal Suite at the landmark

Jamaica Pegasus in Kingston wasnamed in honour of Britain’sPrincess Anne of Windsor.

The Jamaica Pegasus is a property she has been visiting sincethe 1980s.

The suite exists for the sole purpose of creating a modern butstately getaway for the hotel’s discerning guests, said interiordesigner Jacqueline Hendrickson.

“When it came to decorating thePrincess Royal Suite, we tried totake a step back and view it as ablank slate. Being the hotel’s mostluxurious suite, it was importantthat the finishes exuded modernpalatial,” she revealed.

With that in mind, Hendricksonsaid she first selected a deep royalblue colour that immediately feltelegant in the space and paired itwith a rich but clean cream shade.The bathrooms were kept sleekbut lavish by incorporating Carrara marble tiles and a soakingtub.

“We want for the guest to immediately feel pampered when

entering the Princess Royal Suite,not to mention have a great night’ssleep,” she added.

A recent multimillion-dollarrefurbishing of the hotel has seenthe Princess Royal Suite takingpride of place.

However, the Princess is notalone. She shares the spotlight withtwo other beautifully appointedtwo-bedroom luxury suites, with

names depicting places in Jamaica –Liguanea and Trelawny.

The three are the crown in thejewel of the 300-room businesshotel, which boasts facilities for theleisure traveller.

The hotel’s Liguanea Suite is one of its more whimsical and unex-pected suites. The design which incor-porates bright yellows, soft greys andtouches of chrome, can best bedescribed as lively opulence. From the

foyer entry, to the open living-diningroom, to the expansive balcony views,the Liguanea Suite is stylised fortoday’s chic traveller, said Hendrick-son.

While the Trelawny Suite designis traditional with a twist of con-temporary, with rich earth tonesanchoring the suite, the woods ofJamaica are on full display with amix of patterns that are looselyrepresentative of Jamaica’s flora.

All three suites carry featuresincluding a kitchenette, walk-incloset and grand soaking tubsinstalled with guests’ comfort andpleasure in mind.

AIMING TO break down the stigmathat hotel restaurants are expensive,two of Kingston’s executive chefs,

Louis Matthews of The Knutsford Court Hoteland Mark Dekrines at the sister property, theCourtleigh Hotel and Suites, will launch newmenus at their respective eateries by the endof the month.

The chefs unveiled their new and excitingmenu at a tasting for the Hospitality Jamaica(HJ) team last week.

“Within a week, we will introduce a setthree-course menu

which is cost efficient. Our intention is to getpeople to know that both hotel restaurants areaffordable and welcome locals with openarms,” said Matthews, stating that his menuwill cost $2,000 for two courses and $2,400 forthree courses.

Matthews manages the Melting Pot atthe Knutsford. His menu, which willchange every two weeks, offers a choiceamong three starters, three entrées and

three desserts.Last Monday,

rolls and strawberry panacotta, which willboth be part of his new menu, as well as anescoveitch lobster he has as his signature dishon his main menu.

“Lobster is a big seller when in season,” hestated.

His colleague, Dekrines, is redesigning theofferings at the Courtleigh, unveiling a trendyand easy-to-manoeuvre menu.

“We have a section for Jamaican specialtiesand one for vegetarians, along with a niceselection of small plates for persons who wantto try one or two entrées,” he explained.

One of the mouthwatering and simplymind-blowing offerings was the smoked marlin

trio. The innovative chef also had an ackeeand bacon bruschetta, and a tower of chickenscaloppine on show.

“We have to stay current and offer ourguests variety,” says Dekrines, adding that hisAlexander’s restaurant serves breakfast, lunch,dinner and room service.

His menu changes twice per year, and bothhis culinary staff and Matthews’ are involvedin the creativity that comes from the twokitchens.

WHEN THE earthquake of1692 destroyed PortRoyal, the then ‘wickedest

city on Earth’, many survivorscrossed the harbour and settled onseaside land at what is now knownas Kingston. Many died from infec-tion from mosquito-borne diseasesand exposure.

To formalise the settlement, theGovernment bought 200 acres ofland known as Colonel Barry’s Hog Crawle, owned by Sir WilliamBeeston, for £1,000. That was thebirth of Kingston. Plans by JohnGoffe, a surveyor, were drawn up,and terms by which settlers couldacquire land were issued.

Yet, Port Royal was still an alluringplace, and people were turned off bythe state of affairs in the new settle-ment. Port Royal was once again ravaged, in 1703, this time by fire.Shortly after, by law, Kingston wasmade the chief trade port and pointof entry into the island. It was

declared a parish in 1713. However, itwas not until 1872 that it succeededSpanish Town as the capital city.

It has evolved into a bustlingCaribbean metropolis with a colourfulpolitical and social history. Its physical

spaces have changed many times, andits architecture has depicted manystyles and influences. Sadly, though,Kingston has been going throughdecades of architectural rot, and itsface is blighted by structures long pasttheir days of grandeur.

URBAN AESTHETICS

A walk through downtownKingston is almost painful if youare into urban aesthetics. There aretoo many dilapidated buildings,especially residential ones. Yes,some are unbelievably still occu-pied. They are nothing short of aneyesore, and have absolutely noheritage or historical value.

All over the city, there are edifices that tell the story of howgreat Kingston had been. They area main part of the spatial andarchitectural history of the citybuilt on the Liguanea Plain. Butthey are unsightly, and are tellingthe narratives of neglect and theabsence of the political will tomake Kingston pretty again.

From east, to central, to westKingston, despite the modernsuperstructures, there are too manythings that make the English-speaking Caribbean’s top city veryunattractive. And abandonedbrick, board and concrete erectionsat various stages of dilapidationhave taken much from theromance of the Kingston story.

These unflattering buildingsmust be demolished; those that can be restored should be. For ifKingston is to go through a renais-sance, its buildings have to be anintegral part of the rebirth. It doesnot make sense to have lovelyrestored edifices, such as the SimonBolivar Culture Centre (SBCC), anoasis in the city at North Paradeand Church Street, juxtaposedagainst architectural decadence.

Not far from the SBCC is theWard Theatre, existing in the sadshadows of its glory days. It belongson some recovery ward somewhere,or a demolition ball or two will do.But it should not remain at NorthParade with its dirty, peeling facemuch longer.

Kingston must not return tobeing a ‘hog crawle’, a pigsty of yes-teryear. It must sparkle beside theCaribbean Sea. An architecturalrenaissance it truly needs.

The Ward Theatre, existing in the sad shadows of its glory days,belongs on some recovery ward somewhere, or a demolitionball or two will do.

THE SIMON Bolívar CultureCentre (SBCC) looks attrac-tive and imposing at the cor-

ner of North Parade and ChurchStreet in downtown Kingston. Theinside is just as comely. In the heartof the drab, it is indeed an oasis inthe city, an ideal stakeholder in thethrust for a Kingston renaissance.

The idea for the centre was conceived by the late VenezuelanPresident Hugo Chávez, and P.J.Patterson, former prime minister ofJamaica. The project, which beganin 2009, was funded by Venezuela’sPetroCaribe Development Fundand the Government of Jamaica.

It was built and offered as a gift,in honour of Simón Bolívar, ‘TheLiberator’ of South America. In1815, Bolívar lived in exile inJamaica, at 33 Princess Street,Kingston, from where he wrote hisnow famous Letter from Jamaica(Carta de Jamaica). The letter wasabout how he felt about the inde-pendence movement in Venezuela.

The centre was renovated by theUrban Development Corporation(UDC). The chief UDC architect,Jamau Kambui, designed the build-ing, on the front of which is a metalsculpture by Raymond Watson rep-

resenting a battle-ready SimonBolívar on his horse.

The centre was handed over to the

Institute of Jamaica in April last year.In September, it was officially openedwith pomp and pageantry. It is now

handed over to the IOJ’s ProgrammesCoordination Division, which over-sees its management and operations.

The SBCC is a cultural spacethat has an exhibition hall calledSalon de Bolívar, an interpretationroom, a language lab, a multipur-pose room, and a research libraryarea. The facilities are available tothe general public to host culturaland educational activities, perform-ances, lectures, film-screening,rentals, etc. There is currently anexhibition on Simón Bolívar, withprinted copies of his letter fromJamaica at the centre of it.

One of the thrusts of the centre isto make it into a place where peoplecan go to absorb and learn LatinAmerican culture. Thus, the centreoffers Latin dance, French, Spanishand personal development classesfor adults and children. The Spanishcourses include advanced andthree-month conversational classes.

In terms of the expansion ofwhat the centre offers, the oldpimento warehouse at the back ofthe premises and the theatre tavernnestled between the Ward Theatreand the SBCC are under consider-ation. And according to NadineBoothe-Gooden, centre manager, itis the intention to make the centrean iconic place for language, litera-ture and culture in general.

THE JAMAICA Tourist Board(JTB) continues to engagemembers of the travel trade

about the magic of DestinationJamaica. The JTB has staged severalroadshows in key European cities sincethe beginning of January. The showsare designed to update tour operatorsand travel agents on development inJamaica’s tourism product.

In the cities of Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Milan, JTBrepresentatives and several tourismpartners had the opportunity tointeract with agents as they werebriefed on expansions in Jamaica’stourism offerings. Informationincluded the new and upgradedhotels which have been added tothe room stock in time for the win-ter tourist season and, the diversemenu of attractions, including therecent designation of Kingston as aCreative City of Music byUNESCO. Additionally, partici-pants learnt about the opening up ofnew legs on highway 2000, whichallows easy and timely access tomajor towns and cities across theisland.

SALES OPPORTUNITIES

“These roadshows were strategi-cally planned to coincide with thestart of the new year just after thefestive period and in what is tradi-tionally one of the highest bookingmonths for destinations in

Europe,” said Gregory Sherving-ton, the JTB’s regional director forcontinental Europe. “Add to thatthe extremely cold weather in central Europe, which is a motiva-tor to get consumers thinking oftravelling, thus providing opportu-nities for agents to sell Jamaica.We also expect to make tremen-dous gains on bookings for thecurrent winter season given theincreasing trend toward last-minute bookings by the Europeanconsumers,” he added.

The success of DestinationJamaica in welcoming millions ofvisitors each year is due in part topromotional events such as tradeshows. JAMAICA WELCOMES AZMARA JOURNEY: On Sunday,January 10, the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), welcomed a new ves-sel, the Azamara Journey, on its inaugural call to Jamaica at theFalmouth Cruise Shipping Pier.
