September 2019 Vol. 8 Issue 9 • Hospice Happenings • 1 volunteer Newsletter The opportuni,es and requests for volunteer support that appear in this newsle5er are designed for Hospice Simcoe registered and trained volunteers. If you wish to become a registered volunteer, please contact Kathy or Tonya; [email protected] [email protected] Thank you! HOSPICE HAPPENINGS As many of you know, Hospice Simcoe recently introduced an Ended Beginnings program. This ini,a,ve, aimed at anyone who has lost a baby through miscarriage, s,ll birth or during the first year aIer birth, is to help people cope with the trauma and loss. Ably led by a wonderful group of volunteers under Colleen’s guidance, the program offers peer and group support. Fredda French, a re,red RN with years of obstetrical and birthing unit experience, is one of the volunteers helping to support the program. As the group planned the Ended Beginnings program, they thought it would be a lovely gesture to present the par, cipants with something that served as a memento to acknowledge their loss. Fredda liked the idea of giving each of the par, cipants in the sessions, a necklace with a heart shaped medallion, within which was a smaller removable heart shape - one for Mom, one for baby. Thinking this would fit well into our program, she set about finding a local ar,san who might wish to help us out. In January , Fredda sent emails to several local po5ers and waited to see if anyone would respond. Sandra Silberman, originally from South Africa, is a local po5er who shares a studio, Do# Po&s, with her husband, Gavin, on Saunders Road. Well known throughout the area, she exhibits and sells her po5ery at Kempenfest, ArVest Toronto and the Muskoka Arts and CraI Fes,val, to name a few. Last September, Sandra’s brother, Hylton, 41, was killed in a tragic car accident in South Africa. Sandra’s grief overwhelmed her at ,mes and, aIer a par, cularly bad dream, Gavin suggested she seek counselling. On that very same day, Fredda’s email arrived. The email led her on a path that has not only helped Hospice Simcoe but has provided aid to Sandra as well. Sandra learned that she could receive support through our Grief and Bereavement program by a5ending the Sibling Loss group. She signed up, a5ended the sessions, made new friends and found a way to help ease her pain. Sandra has given back to Hospice Simcoe as well. She designed, created and DONATED several lovely heart necklaces to be used in our Ended Beginnings program. And, at Fredda’s sugges, ons, we are calling them ‘Hylton Hearts.’ What Goes Around Comes Around: A Hospice Story Sandra and Gavin in their studio. Hylton Hearts

In September we welcome 15 new volunteers to our team. This is a great group of diverse backgrounds including Nurses, a Security Officer, Reiki practitioner, Tattoo Artist, Realtor and Early Childhood Educator. We are so excited to have them complete their orientation dates and become integrated into our community.

Message from

Our Board Chair

Hello Everyone,

There isn’t too much to report from the Board this month. We are looking forward to re-convening in September and developing our work plan and setting priorities for the upcoming year. There continues to be a significant amount of planning at the Regional and Provincial levels developing the Ontario Health Teams. Of course, it will be interesting to see if the upcoming election has any impact on the current vision. Although, I find it all very interesting and agree with the basic principles, I have personally experienced similar efforts during my 45 years in Health Care that never come to fruition! Not to be skeptical of course. We have some exciting fund raising activities coming up in the near future. Looking forward to working with staff and volunteers on the Smile Cookie Campaign and enjoying dinner at the golf tournament.

Sincerely, Chris

Golf for Hospice We are happy to announce that Golf for Hospice is sold out. Thanks to all participants, sponsors and auction item donors.

3rd Party Fundraising events organized and held independently by third-party organizers are very welcome as they not only increase the public’s awareness of hospice palliative care, but are vital to financially supporting our programs and services. If you belong to or know of an organization/business that might host a fundraising event, Hospice Simcoe would be most grateful to be the charity recipient.
