• Proper Lifting Technique 1. Prepare for safe lifting. 2. Stand with feet shoulder width apart. 3. Bend with the knees, keeping the natural curves of your back in alignment. 4. Grip the object, pulling it in close to your body. 5. Tighten your stomach muscles. 6. Keeping your back in alignment, lift with the legs in a slow, smooth motion

while exhaling. 7. While carrying a load, keep it close to your body, and do not twist or bend

• How is layering done?

• How do you propagate plantlets?

• Climbers or trailers – pick a vigorous stem, pin it down in compost in a small pot (nick the stem first). After rooting, cut the stem.

• Take the miniature plants and press it down into moist soil. After rooting, cut the stem.

taken?

• What about leaf cuttings?

• How are divisions completed?

• Choose a non-flowering shoot and cut it 3-6” long. Take leaves off bottom half. Slice bottom with razor blade. Dip in rooting hormone. Put in hole in soil and firm.

• Similar to stem cuttings but use a leaf stem instead.

• Knock plant gently out of container. Pull apart sections of the plant, leaving each with plenty of root.

two leaf nodes. Place shoots in bags so that they do not dehydrate.

• WEAR YOUR GLOVES. Very near the scissor cut, carefully cut with scalpel at a 45 degree angle down towards the bench. Place in bags.

• Bring to Ms. M. Dip in rooting hormone for 3-5 seconds. Place back in bag.

• Poke a 1.5” hole with your finger. • Firm in cutting. Repeat with other 3 shoots. • Place in class flat to be covered with plastic. • EXTRA TIME? Make 2 more spider plantlet pots.

Division and Potting Up• Watch Ms. Maring’s demonstration of Sanseveria divisions.• Gently work at the roots of the plant. • Be sure to identify the leaves which will be part of your division. • Keep plenty of roots on your division. The root mass should be

at least 2 hands around.• Pot up into half gallon round containers. Your container should

start with approximately 3-4” of soil in it. • Center your division so that the base of the leaves or crown will

end up 1” below the soil surface. • Add soil all around gently firming until nearly full. • Show Ms. M your first attempt. If successful, you may do

another. • We will line up the divisions under the bench and water them at

the end.

Layering• Select one section of the

trailing stems of the Pothos.

• Be sure to note root buds on the underside.

• Carefully press a section into the moist soil and cover with 1/2” of soil.

• Water lightly. • NOTE – there can be

multiple pots started along the same stem.

• We will cut the main stem when roots fully form.

Transplanting Bare Root• Select a plant start from the

jars which has roots. • Put 1-2” soil in a 4” pot.• Suspend the bare root start

so that the base of the stem is approximately 1” from the top of the pot and the roots are resting on the soil.

• Gently fill the pot with soil, lightly firming.

• When pot is full, water lightly.

Succulent Wreaths• Please watch demonstration• Soak moss• Spread layer of moist moss. • Carefully divide succulents – save roots!! Save all scraps!!

Be careful not to break leaves off!!• Arrange divisions on wreath with a little soil under and

around.• Place extra moss on sides. Pull moss around plants. • Wrap wire without cutting into stems. • Use pins to hold “tails” in place.

• Carefully view the succulent wreath picture. • How many varieties of succulents do you see? • Sketch your own wreath – draft the number of succulent

varieties you might fit. Would you like large sections of each or small sections?

• Hint – your wreaths are 12” diameters which means about 38” circumference. Each division will take up 2-3.” How many divisions can you fit?

Succulent Wreaths

• Leave your wreath in the flat. • Choose the 12 divisions you will need. Place all

your divisions before tieing with wire. • Tie your wire tight enough to hold the side moss

on and loose enough not to cut plants. • Secure the wire at the start and finish. Pin down

any loose tails. • Water your wreath and cover with the sheet of

plastic provided.
