I hope 2016 has started well for you. In January Gary and I were in Palm Beach for Cavallino Classic 25. The Breakers Hotel and Cavallino, as

many know, is one of my favorite places and events. That we get to see so many car friends from the Northeast and across the country is added fun.

Thursday morning is the Cavallino Lecture Series, and it never disappoints. This year’s tech Talk featured three special Ferraris. First was the 1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II Scaglietti (s/n 0556MD) also known as The Admiral’s Ferrari, presented by Rear Admiral Robert A. Phillips, USN (Ret.)

The second car was a 1963 Ferrari 400 SuperAmerica Pinin Farina Coupe Aerodinamico Prototipo (s/n 2207SA) presented by owner Lee Herrington, a New England Region member. The third Ferrari was the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider from the rural France ‘barn find’ Baillon Collection. Restorer and New England Region member Paul Russell presented this car.

For more on the Lecture Series see my blog www.theautoblonde.com

It is marvelous how many NER members go to Cavallino. Put it on your to-do list if you haven’t yet attended. And check out the pictures in this issue.

The New England Region team is putting together a fantastic 2016 calendar; karting, dinners, weekends, track events, cars n coffees, shop tours, car shows, and more. The calendar is always evolving so be sure to check the NER website and look for my emails for updates.

I look forward to seeing you at an event this year.

Warmest regards,SuzySuzy Hiniker, Regional Director

march 2016 | HORSETALES | 9

At “Tutto Italiano” last August, I encountered a bright-red race-prepared Ferrari 550. Positioned in a prime spot at the Lars Anderson Museum front entrance, the 550 commanded my attention. Impressed with the Rosso 550’s immaculate

and business-like appearance I wondered who built, owned and sponsored this rarity.

Regional Director Suzy Hiniker answered my questions in one go; would I meet 550 owner and driver John Tirrell of Independent Ferrari Service and write his story for Horse Tales?

I always say yes to a writing assignment, especially when a shop tour is offered.

In September, I took a field trip to Thompson Motor Speedway to meet John Tirrell, his team and get a closer look at the 550/GTC. IFS had rented the track for their 2-day “Team Pilota” Fiat 500 racing series.

IFS Founder/Owner: John Tirrell

I spent the day watching the fast and nimble rent-a-racer Fiat 500 drivers in action (with the 550 acting as pace car) and watched the IFS team quickly assess a Fiat 500 damaged in a spin-out.

IFS Founder/Owner: John TirrellAt day’s end, I sat with John and talked about his career as a Ferrari mechanic and his plans for the 550. I found him friendly, forthcoming and extremely knowledgeable on Ferrari and racing. Adam: “Why this car”? John: “We had already explored and raced the existing Ferrari Challenge models. This is a chance to develop and race a front-engine 12-cylinder Ferrari race car. It is an opportunity for me and my team to showcase our knowledge and expand our skills in the areas of engine management, aerodynamics, suspension, brakes and

most importantly, safety systems.”For John, owning this racing 550 pushes the all the right buttons.

- Exclusivity. A long-held Ferrari precept, 550 racecars are rare and not often for sale.

- Heritage. Ferrari pioneered use of a V-12 in a front-engine GT and the 550 is a key milestone in an ongoing evolution.

- Team building. This 550 is a building block for the team to expand their capabilities. As one third of IFS business is Ferrari Racing Service, the team will use the 550 as a hands-on teaching tool.

John founded Independent Ferrari Service in 1989. He has 45 years as a Ferrari Technician, team member Ben has 11 years, Eric has 10 years and Keegan 4.

Aptly named, IFS is not officially connected with the Ferrari factory.

550 Development History:

In July1996, Ferrari debuted the new 550 Maranello at Nurburgring. The result of an intensive development program ordered by Ferrari boss Montezemolo, with assistance from Michael Schumacher and Niki Lauda, the 550 Maranello was a return to the traditional front-engined V12 Grand Tourer. Electronic driver aids made the new 550 Maranello more user-friendly. Pininfarina executed exterior and interior design, with classic design cues in 250 GTO front fender slots and 365 Daytona round tail-lamps. Extensive aerodynamic work gave a low drag coefficient of .33. Sharing frame design and main engine components with the 456, the 550M was

Page 11: HORSETALES - Ferrari Club of America - New England Region · Admiral’s Ferrari, presented by Rear Admiral Robert A. Phillips, USN (Ret.) The second car was a 1963 Ferrari 400 SuperAmerica

shorter, lighter, and more powerful than the preceding model. In total 3,083 units of the 550 Maranello were produced.

The Search:

In November 2012, John’s search for his next racing Ferrari led to a 2001 550 Maranello/GTC Conversion, s/n 122781, on consignment at Ferrari of Newport Beach, CA. The sale created an opportunity for Tirrell; a complete, running 550 racecar would save money and time. John was for flying his full crew out to view the 550, but closing the shop for a week was impractical, so John and Keegan took a flight west.

On inspection, the Ferrari Red 550 exhibited excellent overall mechanical condition with well-executed paint and bodywork, a very solid roll-cage, 3/16” thick aluminum “safety plate” under driver’s floor, 22-gallon ATL fuel cell, Plexiglas side and rear windows and a

Page 12: HORSETALES - Ferrari Club of America - New England Region · Admiral’s Ferrari, presented by Rear Admiral Robert A. Phillips, USN (Ret.) The second car was a 1963 Ferrari 400 SuperAmerica

carbon-fiber rear diffuser and wing.

A short (and spirited!) test-drive by John and Keegan on public roads confirmed the car ran as promised, a deal was struck and the 550 headed east to IFS.

122871’s GTC Conversion:

Joe Moch, CEO of Advanced Clean Air Technologies bought three 550 cars for his 2-car 550 racing/promotional effort. Jim Busby’s JBR Motorsports built a blue Bonneville land speed racer and a red GTC road-racer from s/n 122781.The blue 550 served well at Bonneville; Moch’s 200.206 mph run moved him from Rookie to A-License status in one weekend, a rare feat. Posting a top speed of 216.133, with exhaust gasses passing through ACAT-made catalysts, he achieved his goals and sold both cars.

The red 550/GTC was built to contest

the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb. Based on the ProDrive design and constructed to FIA race standards at a cost of well over $200k, all the basic elements were in place. As a secondary priority to the Bonneville effort, the red GTC was built, but not fully tested.

The Bonneville 550 story will appear in a future issue of Horse Tales.

550 Evoluzione:

In December 2012, John’s team began work in earnest, first tackling engine, brake, wheel and suspension systems to make the car safe and reliable for testing at full power and speed.

Basic build was very good, but key elements were ripe for improvement. Heavy 19” wheels, stock brakes, shocks, front spoiler and rear diffuser were removed.

The heart of a race car is the engine; even in stock form, the 550 powerplant is

formidable. The 5.5 liter, 518lb 65° V-12 makes 485bhp at 7000rpm, peak torque is 420lb-ft at 5000rpm. Titanium connecting rods, Mahle forged aluminum pistons, light alloy block, heads (4-valve) and oil sump, Nikasil cylinders, and a dry-sump oiling system are used. Variable intake manifold adds power-tuning opportunity when combined with the new Emtron engine management system.

IFS Team tested engine, performed belt and seal service and deemed it ready for use.

Current RPM limit is 4600 rpm for engine safety prior to final software tuning by Emtron engineer Nick Pavlotech. In race tune, the engine should produce 620hp reliably.

Brembo engineers developed a brake system for this specific chassis number, replacing the existing stock pieces. Brembo

parts unique to this chassis have new part numbers.

Forgeline wheel and Brembo brake teams worked together to create lightweight 18” Forgeline custom wheels 18 x 13 rear, 18 x 11 front. The 550 now has more front tire than a Challenge Ferrari has in rear. IMSA-style studs and nuts are hand-fabricated.

5-lug hubs were retained. Center-lock hubs were considered, but not used.

Pirelli P-Zero tires are fitted; final race tire choice is still open.

Anze Suspension supplied 3-way Penske shocks and new suspension arms modified to allow quick track-side adjustments.

Team member Keegan spent 2 weeks fitting the suspension components and hand-fitting/reaming two dozen Delrin suspension bushings.

Ben and Eric teamed up to install the new Brembo brake system and Forgeline wheel package.

An ATL “dry-break” fuel filler was added to right side of car for quick, safe refueling.

As designed, the 550 is a flat-floor chassis, but was delivered to IFS missing critical side floor pans and wheel-well liners. The resulting under-car aerodynamic chaos made the car unstable at speed, and reportedly made the previous owners first and only track outing “frightening”. Stock side floor pans were re-fitted, and new one-piece, easy-to-remove side-skirts were fabricated by Marcel Mercier and Ben, Chris Cerce did intake air box mods and will create new wheel well liners.

Nordan Composites created a new, much lighter (approx 40 lbs reduction) carbon fiber nose/splitter. New carbon rear diffuser and rear wing (moved back 2”) will integrate airflow at rear.

A racing clutch will be fitted with larger, stronger 575 half-shafts. The stock clutch has slippage; it is the weak link between high horsepower engine and large rear tires.

Rear-mounted 6-speed transaxle retains stock 3.91:1 final drive and gear ratios.

Weight reduction is an ongoing process. Current weight is approx 3400lbs (with driver & 22 gallons of fuel). A stock 550

weighs approx 3926lbs (with driver & 30 gallons of fuel). The current horsepower-to-weight ratio of 1 to 5.5 seems somehow poetic.

Cockpit heat is often present in a front-engine GT, passengers have had their shoe soles melt. Further insulation is planned to reduce temps from side-exhaust.

Without heater/defroster, cockpit air circulation is limited to on-roof scoop and small sliding side windows. A CoolSuit helps the driver remain in the safe temperature zone. Tirrell and his team will continue to evolve and refine s/n 122871 for reliability, performance and safety.

Watching the 550 in motion at Thompson was exciting, even at reduced rpm and speed. Although exhaust is well-muffled, I’m not alone in anticipating the sound at full speed will be spectacular.

Future Racing Plans:

John’s driving skill combined with the IFS Team’s excellent race preparation make this potent Ferrari racer one to watch when campaigned in SCCA and HSR race groups.

FCA/NER members braved wind and rain Jan 10th to attend a luncheon event at Papa Razzi Trattoria, Concord, MA.

Organized by MA Chapter President Tom Ducibella, featured speaker Don Rose of RM Sothebys gave us an overview of the collector market, current Ferrari value trends and his own passion for cars. A lively Q&A session followed.

Don recently celebrated 10 years at RM

Sotheby’s and sees himself as a “hunter-gatherer” in “the relationship business”. In the end, “the cars are the stars” and RM Sotheby’s strives to get the best examples.

Don spoke on buyer and seller premiums, value expectation, base and floor prices, reserve strategies and transport fees.

He also covered the market importance of originality, proper base documentation, and the RM Sotheby’s research center

where photos, research and catalog writing are performed.

“Cars are only original once”.

A long-time car enthusiast, Don is very knowledgeable on European sports and GT cars has owned and traded many classics from the1930’s through the ‘80’s, mostly British marques, although it must be mentioned that he joined the FCA soon after his acquisition of a 2001 550 Maranello in 2014.

Don also serves vice-chairman of the Aston Martin Owners Club North America (Section East).

His life-long Aston-Martin allegiance can be traced to his seeing the 1964 movie “Goldfinger”, the true star of the film was an Aston-Martin DB5, equipped as a deadly weapon for Bond’s use. His interest in both Aston-Martin cars and James Bond was realized when Don consigned the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 James Bond film car to RM’s 2010 London sale, and went on a world tour promoting the car. Demonstrating the DB5’s “machine-gun feature” for Tony Blair with his security team observing closely was an interesting experience.

FCA is pleased to welcome such an enthusiastic and knowledgeable member to our ranks. He is happy to provide collection management or market advice to FCA members, and invites you all to reach out anytime.

Ferrari of New England unveiled the new Ferrari 488 Spider with many members in attendance. In pretty

Blu Corsa with matching thread and vertical leather inserts on the Daytona seats, this Spyder also had matching luggage. The Retractable Hard Top (RHT) unfolds and retracts in a record 14 seconds and can be raised or lowered when the car is moving. A blindingly quick 0-60 < 3.0 secs, the twin turbo V8 is both fast and efficient. And like all

Ferraris the 488 Spider has its own unique engine soundtrack.
