The catamaran arrived in three parts at the club car park on February 8 at 4am, after leaving Palmerston North nine hours earlier by truck. It is the widest boat built to date by Palmerston North firm Profab Engineering, and managing director Carl Ferguson said it took ‘‘a little thinking outside the square’’ to find the right location from which to reassemble and launch it. ‘‘Because of its size, we couldn’t launch from the Wanganui wharf so had to look for an alternative site. We were going to park up in the paddock behind the boat club but when that fell through the club approached us about using its car park. We’re as excited about it all as the people coming down to watch.’’ The lift was scheduled to start about 8am but delayed until 11am while the correct part for one crane turned up. By that time more than 100 people had gathered to watch, including locals, holidaymakers and people down from Palmerston North especially for the event. Foxton Beach resident John McConaghy had been photographing the event since the catamaran parts first arrived and said it was worth the wait, while Jackie Fowler had been home and back three times during the wait. ‘‘I missed the launch of the last catamaran here and I was determined not to miss this,’’ she said. Despite the delay, everything else went to plan, with the wind keeping to a small breeze and in just over an hour, the top deck was in place. Mr Ferguson said it would take about a week to fully assemble, and then two weeks to complete the electrical wiring. ‘‘Once we’re powered up, everything will be tested. It’s like a mini house but it’s got some toys in it.’’ The multi-million dollar catamaran, which will weigh 110 tonnes when fully assembled, sleeps 18 and will be fitted with state-of-the-art technology that allows it to steer and drive itself. Mr Ferguson is confident the big cat will cross the sand bar at the river mouth when it launches at the end of the month. ‘‘We’ll wait for high tide and keep the catamaran as light as possible. ‘‘The catamaran only needs 1.7 meters of water to float but it’s good to have the local club here for advice.’’ Named Guru, which means ‘deep water’ in Aborigine, the boat will head to Wellington first for its final fittings before starting work in Patea and later heading to Darwin as a gear transporter for an oil and gas company. Mr Ferguson said he was talking with Horowhenua District Council about finding another location in the area for the next two boats nearing assembly stage that are longer still, at 36m.

GRAPE TO SEE: Ohau is a relatively new grape growing region. Already the wines from local vineyards are legendary challenginglong-established vintners and winning awards internationally. On a crisp Horowhenua morning, Ohau grapes soak up sunshine andsoil nutrients left behind from the Bishops’ dairy farm in this photo taken by Horowhenua Chronicle reporter Frankie Webb. TheBishops farmed the land from the 1920s and sold the property seven years ago for vineyard conversion.■ Have you snapped a good pic lately of someone or something in Horowhenua? YOUR VIEWS

StupidityOn Monday evening (last week)as I was leaving work just before6pm I witnessed the most blatantact of stupidity and defiance. Thebells and lights on the QueenStreet railway crossing startedto ring as I approached them.

While I waited I observed ayoung lad of around 9 to 10 yearsof age, wearing a striped T-shirtand on a bright light bluescooter, playing around in frontof the shops on the SH1 side ofthe railway line. He heard the

bells and scooted up to thecrossing, where he waited for afew seconds as the trainapproached. As it got close hethen played chicken with thetrain, crossing the railway linein front of the train, whereuponthe driver blew his horn. Thechild then turned and gave thedriver the finger. Once the trainhad passed the lad then scootedback across the railway linetowards SH1. He had no needwhatsoever to cross.

I write this in the hope aparent will recognise the child as

theirs and take him to task.Unfortunately I was too slow

to get a clear photo of the lad or Iwould have been handing it topolice. One can only imagine thethoughts of the poor train driver.

RoadmessWith reference to Anne Young’sletter In reply to Mrs B Vesely’sletter about Road Mess in lastWednesday’s Chronicle.

When I worked at Fairhall

Vineyards, Blenheim, a fewyears ago, a local farmer’s herdhad to cross New Renwick Rdtwice a day for milking.

A large mess was always left, which in time the council finallygot him to hose the roadwayafter the herd crossed each time.I think he had to install a mainsoutlet for his hoses. Anyone whotravelled along that road willremember the road beingcleaned by the farmer. I think itwas classed as a road hazard.

Anger over Oxford St vandalismBy PETER FRANKLIN

Business owners at the northernend of Oxford Street are angryabout thousands of dollars worthof damage caused by at least twoyouths, captured on surveillancecameras.

About $15,000 worth of dam-

age was inflicted on cars after thetwo youths threw rocks from therailway lines into a car yard.

Levin police said someone inthe community knows theseyoung men and they need tocome forward with the informa-tion.

Over the past two years busi-

nesses, regardless of whatservices they offer, have had ithard with the tight economy.Damage by vandals has a hugefinancial cost and is totallyunnecessary.

Nathan McColl, manager ofRoss McColl Cars, said somevehicles in his yard had been

damaged in two separate attacks.Mr McColl said anyone who

can identify these people shouldcontact police.

He said it was dishearteningand he felt like they were work-ing for nothing. ‘‘It puts a lotof stress on us, wondering whatwe are going to find when we

arrive at work,’’ he said.It is believed the same group

have also vandalised New World,TRC Toyota and Repco.■ Anyone with information can ringthe Levin police station, ph366-0500, the confidential crime line366-0528 or Crimestoppers 0800555-111.

Don’t jump into aweight-loss scamBeware of weight loss scams whenlooking to fulfil a New Year’sresolution.

Scammers take advantage ofpeople’s good intentions toimprove their health in the newyear by pedalling fast and easyweight loss schemes. Theseschemes often come with claimsthat you can achieve amazingresults with minimal effort.

They typically involve anunusual or restrictive diet, revolutionary exercise, ‘fat-busting’ device, or products suchas pills, patches or creams.

Weight loss scams ofteninvolve people signing up to a freetrial of a weight loss product, onlyto find out later that they’ve beensigned up to a hidden and costlysubscription to the scheme. Whenthey try to cancel thesubscription, they can’t reachanyone.

Get-thin-quick schemes lackany scientific evidence ordemonstrated links between theproduct or programme and theresult. What’s more, theseschemes can have seriousconsequences on your health, particularly if they involveshoddy medicines, supplementsor other treatments.

If you’re seeking to lose weightthis year, remember these twogolden rules:1. Always check first with a healthcare professional if you’rethinking of making a radicalchange to your diet or fitnessregime.2. Don’t be tricked by offers for fastand easy results if you do, the onlyplace you will feel lighter is yourwallet.

How the scam works. You come across an offer online,on TV or in the mail about aweight loss program, food, supplement, gadget or process. The weight loss scheme isadvertised with claims that it canproduce amazing results quicklyand with minimal effort.Examples of weight loss scamclaims include ‘guaranteed’ or‘miracle’ results, ‘lost 30 kilos in 30days’, or even ‘lose weight whileyou sleep’.The advertisement might alsocome with testimonials andbefore-and-after pictures fromhappy customers of the schemethat claim dramatic results. These weight loss schemes oftencome at a hefty price. You may be asked to pay a largeup-front fee to receive the product.Alternatively, you may initiallysign up to a ‘free’ trial period, onlyto later find out that you havebeen signed up to a hidden andcostly long-term subscription. Ifyou pay or sign up to a weight lossscam, all you will lose this NewYear is your money.Protect yourself.Remember — there are no magicpills for rapid weight loss. Speakwith your GP about healthy andsafe weight loss options.Always get independent advice ifan offer involves significantmoney, time or commitment.Read all the terms and conditionsof any offer very carefully: claimsof free or very cheap offers oftenhave hidden costs. If you think you’re being chargedcosts for a subscription you didn’tsign up to, contact you bank orfinancial institution immediately.

PREPARATION TIME:

1 hour makes 12

INGREDIENTS

125g unsalted butter, at roomtemperature1/2 cup + 1 tbsp (125g) castersugar1/2 vanilla bean, splitlengthways and seeds scrapedout2 free-range eggs1 cup + 1 tbsp (125g) groundalmonds2 tbsp (25g) plain flourTo assemble:1 batch sweet pastry (seebelow)6 plums, stone removed andcut into eighths1/2 cup blueberrieswarmed apricot jam for glazing

METHOD

Cream the butter and sugar with ahandheld electric mixer until lightand fluffy. Add the vanilla seedsand the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.Scrape down the sides of the bowlto ensure everything is evenlycombined.

Add the ground almonds andflour and gently mix through untilevenly combined.

Set aside until ready to use. When your pastry has been

chilling for at least 30minutes,grease well two 8cm fluted loose-bottom tart tins.

Take your chilled sweet pastryout of the fridge and roll out

between 2 sheets of baking paperuntil 3mm thick. Cut out 10cmrounds and line the tart tins, pressing the pastry gently downinto the corners. Trim the edgesby rolling a rolling pin over the topof the tin. Prick the base of eachcase with a fork. Refrigerate for atleast 30minutes.

Preheat the oven to 200C(180C fan-bake).

Line each pastry case with around of baking paper thatextends over the edges and fillwith uncooked rice or bakingbeans and blind bake for 10-12minutes.

Remove from the oven andcarefully lift off the baking paperand rice or beans.

Spoon 3-4 tablespoons of thefrangipane into each case. Top

with the plum slices, arranging ina circular fashion to resemble aflower.

Return to the oven for a further10-15minutes until the frangipanehas set and the pastry looksgolden.

Remove from the oven andplace a blueberry in the centreand glaze with warmed apricotjam.

Cool before removing the tartsfrom the tins. The frangipane willkeep for up to 2 weeks in anairtight container in therefrigerator.

SWEET PASTRY

2 cups high grade flour2/3 cups icing sugar1/4 tsp salt100g butter, cubed and slightlysoftened2 eggs

In a large bowl combine flour, sugar and salt and, using onlyyour fingertips, rub in the butteruntil it resembles very coarsebreadcrumbs— you wantdifferent-sized lumps of butter inthemix as it’s the lumps of butterthat create the flakiness. If youwant to do this part in a foodprocessor you can, but use thepulse function for only a fewseconds at a time, checkingbetween pulses.

Add eggs and, again usingonly your fingertips, work them inuntil the dough begins to holdtogether.

Tip the dough out on to thebench and knead lightly, using thepalm of your hands. Push thedough across the bench with thepalm of your hand, then use abench scraper or a knife to gatherit back up into a ball. Rotate 180degrees and repeat. The doughshould be smooth, but with a fewsmall pieces of butter showingthrough.

Form pastry into a ball, flatteninto a circle about 1.5cm high andwrap in plastic wrap. Chill for atleast 1 hour (preferably 2 hours)before using as per your recipe’sinstructions.

Christmas has been and gone and sohave the Boxing Day and New Year salesand we have noticed an increase in thenumber of people with smartphones, tablets and eReaders.

eBooks can be read on a dedicatedeReader device (such as a Kobo or SonyReader) or on a computer or tablet.

eReaders use a technology called eInkwhich is an electronic form of ink onpaper that is easy on your eyes.

They are small lightweight devicesthat generally have a long battery lifeand enough storage to hold hundreds, ifnot thousands, of individual ebooks.Tablets need to be recharged a lot morefrequently and don’t use eInk but youcan use them for many purposes, not justreading books.

If you have a library card you haveaccess to a large collection of ebooks thatyou can borrow free of charge.

You can borrow six eBooks at a timefor a period of three weeks. After threeweeks the books return themselves tothe library shelves ready for someoneelse to borrow.

Other than a library card, the onlyother things you need are:- a compatible device- an internet connection, and- an Adobe ID.

Family celebrate 100-year farming traditionBy TANYAWOOD

LVN110114T

API SHOW: Ron Horn, left, with cousin Roger Horn who will be celebrating 100 years of the Horn family’s involvement at the HorowhenuaAP&I Show. Pictured with Jersey cow Shirlette Gran Sally who will be shown at this year’s show.

There’s been a Horn familymember exhibiting at theHorowhenua AP&I Show everyyear for the past 100 years, withthis month’s show being theircentennial celebration.

Ohau farmer Ron LethamHorn started the family traditionbreeding and exhibiting pedigreeJersey cows at the Levin show in1914.

Five years later, he took homethe Champion Jersey Cow titleand started a collection ofchampionship ribbons, numbering hundreds.

Great-grandson Ron Hornsaid the first ribbons were sewninto large wall hangings, and therest are in a big box up in hisceiling.

‘‘There’s been a Horn familymember at every show in onecapacity or another and it’s fairto say the family became the oneto beat. The RL Horn trophy wasdonated by my great-granddadfor the most points in-show, andit was won 40 years straight bythe Horns.’’

His great-grandfather startedthe Kuku stud farm, which latermoved to Allandale farm, justnorth of Levin, in the 1940s.

The stud farm was run by hisgrandfather, father and twobrothers.

Mr Horn took his first steps inthe parade ring as a five-year-oldand still keeps his hand in,helping friends display theircattle at the show.

‘‘It must be something in theblood, but I still get the samethrill showing cattle, and I oftenget quite emotional.’’

The family farm is now basedin Feilding, run by Mr Horn’s

cousin, Peter, who will bejudging this year’s jersey sectionat the show.

‘‘His children are getting

involved in the AP&I Show sothat’s the fifth generation ofHorn now.’’

Mr Horn, current deputy vice

president of the HorowhenuaAP&I Association and grandparade organiser for the past fiveyears, said he planned to get as

many of the Horn family as hecould to the AP&I Show onSunday for morning tea andcommemoration speeches.

Mighty Monaro rumbles into race mode

LVN201113pjfmonaro1

GARY’S weekend office, the interior decor may not amount to luxury but it sure is functional.

LVN201113pjfmonaro2

OLD Holden’s don’t die -they just get faster.LVN201113pjfmonaro3

THE orange No 62 looks the part.

By PETER FRANKLIN

MUSCLEMATTERSCentral Muscle Cars are predominantly aNorth Island-based class, and was formed in2003, by a group of likeminded enthusiastswho wanted to create a class catering toclassic competition muscle cars. centralmuscle cars grew quickly, as many othercompetitors who shared the same passion forthundering, powersliding australian andamericanmuscle cars came on board and thefan base also grew rapidly.Central Muscle Cars caters to productionvehicles manufactured from 1958-1978, ofwhich a minimum 1000 identical units musthave been produced in a 12 month period, tobe eligible. There are two classes, Group 1 andGroup 2.The two classes can be identified by thedifferent coloured windscreen banners. Group1 cars have a red banner, Group 2 cars, a bluebanner.

No stranger to motor racing, Levin’s GaryMcKelvie’s latest creation is a mindbendingclassic Monaro that has the power torumble.

‘‘We’ve worked hard on it and it isalready showing the potential we wanted. In fact at Manfeild, once the power came onit, was a little hard to control,’’ McKelviesaid.

During that outing, McKelvie and hisdedicated crew spent a lot of time trying toset the car up to get the maximum power onthe ground less the wheelspin.

The now immaculate 1968 Monaro tookthree years to rebuild, starting with a carthat was suffering a major infestation ofrust and looking nothing like its formerglory.

McKelvie purchased an HT HoldenPremier to use as a donor and removed thelower floorpan, which was stitched into theMonaro by a good friend and a master bodyman, ‘Skids’.

Gary sent the car up to PalmerstonNorth to Tim Lloyd of Octane Engineeringwhose immense experience from buildingV8 supercars came into play. Lloyd fittedthe rollcage and mounted the differentialand crafted the headers.

Since then the Monaro has had the bestof everything fitted, including the 720hpNascar Chevrolet engine, bolted to a Jericogearbox.

McKelvie will race the Monaro in theCentral Muscle Cars series and, with hisextensive racing background that includes, stockcars, super saloons and truck racing, the bright orange Monaro is sure to excitethe crowd.

Beautiful properties using best brandsIn a world of throw-away gadgetry andcheap and nasty products KC Motors has aproud history of service, experience and atop quality range for the district since 1956.Offering solutions, not salesmen, KC Motorsaims to help its customers keep theirproperties beautiful using the best brandsand the best backup. This is based on its

team’s extensive product knowledge, KCMotors history in the business, as well asgreat parts and service backup loan equip-ment for breakdowns and pickup anddelivery.

The KC Motors team has a great blend ofolder staff with a wealth of knowledge, along with younger staff that provides theenergy and drive to make things happen.

KC Motors staff sees it well placed to dealwith new trends in the outdoor equipmentindustry: including the growing lifestyleblock market which is only getting strongeraround the region. Another trend in themarket is the move away from cheap, buyon impulse, one year and throw it away thenext type of products. There has been anoticeable increase at KC Motors in cus-tomer’s spending money on products, especially generators and water blasters, which are built on quality and strength, rather than on price.

It is not unusual for staff to seecustomers who have bought a water blasterfrom a big box store or online and have itrapidly breakdown, something that

strengthens KC Motors obligation to sell onquality, not price.

A case in point is KC’s line of WalkerMowers; rugged machines built for therigors of daily commercial operation anddesigned to mow virtually any property.

Every detail of the Walker design hasbeen tested in the field and as a result everyWalker is reliable, designed to perfectionand manufactured to give top performance.Nothing shows the reliability of the Walkermore than the satisfaction of customerssuch as Repi Wright from Levin HolidayPark. It’s not too early, think about winterDiggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

LEEKS should be planted as soon as possible.

It may sound a bit unusual but now is thetime to get organised with your wintergardens.

With both vegetables and flowers it isover the next couple of months you need toplant up seeds or seedlings so that you willhave crops to harvest and displays offlowering plants, in the middle of winter.

If you plant late, say April through toJune, then there will be not much growthtill the spring and then the vegetables willgo to seed and be a waste of time. Forflowers it is not a problem.

Planting vegetables such as brassicasat this time of the year can be a problembecause of white butterflies and theircaterpillars devouring your young plants.

The best solution I have found for thisis the following;

If growing winter cabbage, cauliflowerand broccoli from plants then check theplants you buy for the little yellow eggs ofthe white butterflies and rub them off theleaves so the plants are clean.

Also don’t buy seedlings that are big asthey are likely to have been stressed andmay go to seed prematurely.

Instead, look for nice young plants andif a bit too small to transplant don’t worrythey are good value for you to grow on tillthey are big enough to transplant.

I like to spray the seedlings a few daysbefore transplanting with Vaporgard asthis reduces the transplant shock and theplants stand up without laying down asyou often see with transplantingseedlings. They get away to a quickerstart.

Also remember to plunge the punnetinto a bucket of water to thoroughly wetthe mix before removing the seedlings. This reduces root damage.

When you make the planting hole, place some Neem Tree Granules into thebase of the hole alone with some RokSolid. Also sprinkle the same onto the soilaround the seedlings.

The Neem Granules help to protect theplant from insect pests and the Rok Solidassists in root development and suppliesabout 80 odd minerals and elements for ahealthier plant and more nutritionalvalue for you.

Doing this only will help withcaterpillar control but the next step willmake sure you don’t have the pests on theplants and in amongst the curds ofcauliflowers and broccoli when youharvest.

The total protection is by using hoopsof alkathene pipe and crop cover mesh.

You place lengths of the pipe into thesoil making a hoop that is about 1 metretall over the row of plants.

The pipes are spaced about 50 to 70 cmapart.

Then take your crop cover which is 4metres wide and place it over the hoopsand on the windward side cover it withsoil to hold secure. On the ends and theother side place lengths of old 100mm x50mm (4 x 2) wood to hold in place. Thisallows you to open up and weed as needed.

The rest of the time the plants areprotected from insects, birds, cats andstrong winds.

The cover gives at 15 per cent shadefactor which in a sunny situation is alsogood value.

It allows rain or overhead wateringwith a soft wand to wet the soil still.

Winter vegetables such as leeks shouldbe planted as soon as possible andfollowed up with your brassicas over thenext month or two. Remember to addnatural products such as animal manures, blood and bone and Garden Lime. If youdon’t feed the soil you don’t get the results.

Palmerston North has had unusualweather patterns since August.

August was a brilliant month after amild no frost winter here; since then itsbeen very piece meal.

Ample rain but chilly winds and notmany hot summer like days.

What I have noticed as a result is verylittle damage by psyllids on tomato plants

outside and I have not seen any whitebutterflies except the odd ones.

Last season I could not grow a tomatoplant out in the open so this year I am

using a Quarantine house and insect proofglasshouses to grow tomatoes and othercrops.

Aphids and whitefly are in the

glasshouses; weekly I need to spray forcontrol, but no psyllids.

The weather here has been such thatpopulations of psyllids have not grownand thus outdoor tomatoes are doing wellso far.

The glasshouses are a real asset and Ihighly recommend you keen gardeners toinvest in one before winter so you canextend your growing season.

In some areas like here in PalmerstonNorth it is the only way to grow some heatloving plants such as okra, luffa, cucumber, chilli and capsicums with agood degree of success even at this time ofthe year.

For instance outside in the open dwarfbeans and normal type climbing beans aredoing well but snake beans are struggling. Not enough heat.

If you are going to buy a glasshousetype unit then the best is definitely glassas opposed to plastic or other materials.Glass may break if you play cricket on thelawn but it will out last as many years asyou can garden, otherwise.

Its easy to clean and maintain andunlike plastic film or similar materials itis not effected by UV so does not have to bereplaced every few years.

By placing quarantine cloth over thevents and doorway you can make yourglasshouse fairly insect proof. (You cantake insects into the house on plantmaterial or even in soil/compost mixes.)

If you need some information onglasshouse growing you can grab a copy ofmy book Wally’s Glasshouse Growing forNew Zealand.

With the world’s weather patternschanging it could mean a glasshouse is theonly way to have a reasonable controlover the environment and be able to growthe plants you want.

Holden hopes Trax finds new gearROAD TESTBy Colin Smith

The Trax is the latest addition to Holden’smade-in-Korea lineup — joining the Barina,Cruze wagon, Malibu and the Captiva 5 andCaptiva 7 duo — and is another early arrivalin the new market segment where nearlyevery major carmaker is gearing up for aslice of the action.

Hopes are pinned on the popularity ofcrossovers finding yet another gear bymoving down one size to a compact urbanformat where four-wheel-drive isn’t anecessity.

The important things are a high-ridingdriving position and five-door wagonconfiguration, measuring up a little overfour metres in length and hitting a couple oflow-to-mid $30K price points.

For the Holden Trax, that means a basemodel LS version at $32,990 and a higher-grade LTZ at $35,490. Both use the 1.8-litrepetrol engine — it’s the Cruze powerplant —with front-wheel-drive and a six-speedautomatic transmission with Active Selectmanual mode.

It makes Holden an early player in themarket in which the Nissan Juke is wellestablished, the Peugeot 2008 is a recentarrival and the Ford EcoSport is on the 2014horizon. And at 4278mm in length it’sdimensioned neatly between the Barina andCruze hatchbacks.

It’s easy to pinpoint the arena where theTrax should do better. The 1.8-litre engine is

outdated, lacking torque and it isn’tparticularly fuel efficient.

The 1796cc engine develops 103kW but nottill 6300rpm, while peak torque is 175Nm at3800rpm. Six speeds help a little with someresponsiveness and the ratios allow 100km/hcruising at a reasonably relaxed 2400rpm insixth gear or 3300rpm in fifth and 4600rpm infourth.

Fuel consumption is rated at 7.6 litres per100km and my road test averaged 8.1 litresper 100km.

Had Holden chosen to equip the Trax withthe 1.4-litre iTi direct injection turbochargedengine used in the better Cruze models, thedriving experience would be significantlymodernised — more torque accessible atmuch lower revs bringing much-neededflexibility.

The Trax is easy to drive in the city, withlight steering and excellent visibility, but theLTZ specification means big 18-inch alloywheels and 215/55 R18 tyres.

The Continental ContiPremiumContact2rubber provides a confident grip level butthere’s a feeling the Trax is a little over-tyredand that contributes to a thumpy ride acrosslevel changes and corrugated surfaces.

In the front you sit upright in slimlydesigned seats with moderate side bolsters.

The vehicle has manual driver’s seatcushion height and slide/recline movementsand also a tilt and reach adjustable steeringcolumn.

It feels a little narrow-bodied across therear seat, while the upright seating theme iscontinued but with plenty of headroom, a lotof footwell space and decent kneeroom.

Load space is a useful 356 litres, which

expands to 785 litres with the 60/40 split rearseats folded. The headrests don’t need to beremoved to fold the seats — provided thefront seats are bumped forward a little.

The test car carried the optional 205/70R16 spare wheel — an emergency inflator kitis the standard fitment.

A notable feature which is standard onboth Trax models is the MyLinkinfotainment system with seven-inch colourtouchscreen offering embedded app featuressuch as Pandora and Stitcher audio and alsoproviding the reversing camera display.

The 230-volt power outlet in the rear of thecentre console provides a mobile rechargingpoint for laptops and other devices.

The LS base model runs on 16-inch alloywheels and the specification includes clothtrim seats, auto headlights, a leathersteering wheel with cruise control, audio

and phone controls, a six-speaker audio system withUSB and auxiliaryconnectivity and single zoneair conditioning.

Standard safety features onboth LS and LTZ modelscomprise six airbags andElectronic Stability Controlplus Hill Start Assist and aDescent Control System. TwoISOFIX child seat anchorpoints are included and twotether points in the rear.

The Trax recently achieveda five-star Australasian NCAPsafety rating.

The LTZ specificationprovides an upgrade which

includes the 18-inch alloys and wider tyres, plus a leather-look Sportec trim withturquoise stitching, heated front seats, frontfog lights, trip computer and storage trayunder the front passenger seat for the $2500premium.

One of the biggest challenges facing theTrax LTZ can be found right alongside in aHolden showroom. The Captiva 5 LT isanother 2WD crossover alternative butserves up a more powerful — and muchhigher torque — 2.4-litre petrol engine, plusmore cabin room and dual-zoneairconditioning for $36,990.

It leaves the LTZ version stranded a littlein no-man’s land. It’s hard to find compellingreasons to spend the $2500 premium over theLS model while just another $1500 moves youup into the next tier of the Holden crossoverfamily.

Rascals roll Pumas to claim teams title

LVN150114stocks

TEAM STAR: Rotorua’s 353R Dale Stewart was the man of the night for the Rotorua team, attacking the defending champs withdevastating results.

LVN150114stocks2

IN the semifinal against animpressive Tasman team, 84NMichael Paynter dished outsome punishing hits but failed tostop the hard-charging Stewart.

By PETER FRANKLIN

The Rotorua Rascals arrived at RobertsonHolden International Speedway onSaturday ready to do whatever it took towin the national teams title and they did ina brutal final against the home trackfavourites, the Palmerston North Pumas.

At the end of the qualifying heats run theweek before, the boys from Rotorua hadbattled their way to the top of the pointstable, followed by the defending championsthe Pumas.

With the rebel flag of Rotorua flyingproudly, the New Zealand teamschampionship final was going to be aspeedway fan’s dream come true. Althoughonly qualifying second on the points tablethey had the crowd behind them, hometrack advantage and a great history ofwinning the title.

The Pumas were missing a key member,Peter Rees who was dealt to by the two ofthe Stratford Stormers in the leadup race, that developed serious engine problems inthe No 32P, forcing him out for the rest ofthe night.

Pumas got a bad start in the final when37p Josh Prentice was rolled by 583r BrentStewart on the opening lap. Rotorua seemedto have control of the race with 835r DamianOrr out front, but they suffered their ownsetback when 538r Chris Hall was rolled by35p Alec Wilson.

The intense battle continued soon afterwhen 36p Jay Knight was rolled by 353rDale Stewart, but the race wasn’t over.More superb blocking by 34p GavinTaniwha allowed 33p Darrel Wallace to getwithin striking distance of the lead over thenext few laps, but Taniwha was eventuallyordered off due to an indiscretion, and thetitle was deservedly now heading north toGeyserland.

The finishing order: 835r Damian Orr,33p Darrel Wallace, 583r Brent Stewart, 35pAlec Wilson, 385r Steve Gray.

Leading up to the championship finals, the huge crowd was treated to some of thebest teams action that they could have

wished for.Surprise of the championship was their

first appearance of the Tasman Thunder atthe NZ title, for their first time they finisheda very credible fourth overall, behind awell-drilled and experienced WellingtonYoung Guns.

Corolla maintains its top billing

THE Toyota Corolla notched up another year as New Zealand’s top selling car in 2013.

By COLIN SMITH

New Zealand’s robust 2013 newvehicle sales maintained momen-tum through December to deliverthe highest annual new vehicleregistration figure in nearly 30years.

Total 2013 registrations of113,117 were 12,322 (12.2 per cent)units up on the 2012 total and thehighest since 1984.

The year ended strongly withcommercial vehicle registrationsof 2405 units being 45.6 per centahead of December 2012 and pas-senger car sales of 6371 providingthe highest December total since1976, the year after the MotorIndustry Association (MIA)began collating industry num-bers.

‘‘2013 will likely be remem-bered as the year in which theNew Zealand economy finally leftthe starting line on the path toeconomic recovery from a num-ber of setbacks including the2008-09 financial crisis andrestrictions on supply of newvehicles following 2011 floods inThailand and the 2011 tsunami inJapan,’’ said Mr David Crawford,MIA chief executive officer.

Toyota was New Zealand’s top-selling new vehicle brand for the26th consecutive year withregistrations of 23,705 newvehicles (passenger cars 16,172and commercial vehicles 7533).

The two most popular vehiclesin New Zealand last year wereboth Toyotas — the Corollamaintaining its top selling statuswith 5993 sold and Hilux comingin at number two with 5041 to leadthe commercial vehicle segment.

The Hilux battled throughoutthe year for number one position

in the commercial segment withthe Ford Ranger — the first timein many years the Hilux has hadits number one position threat-ened.

The Ford Ranger was the best-selling commercial model for themonth of December with 573units followed by the ToyotaHilux with 458 units.

However, the Toyota Hiluxretained its very long history asthe top selling commercialvehicle with 5041 registrationsclosely followed by the Ford

Ranger with 4924 registrations.Along with a substantial

increase in commercial vehiclesales in 2013, the other significantmarket trend has been the con-tinued rise of Sport UtilityVehicles which now account forjust over one out of every foursales (27 per cent of the market)with a total of 30,478registrations.

The Small Car and Pick Up/Cab Chassis utility segments arealmost equal as the second pre-ferred vehicle type with 19 per

cent market share each. The Large Car market con-

tinued to diminish in importance— its share of the market fallingfrom 5.2 per cent in 2012 to 4.0 percent last year. However, theHolden Commodore stillmanaged to finish the year as thethird most popular passenger carmodel behind the Corolla and theSuzuki Swift.

In the luxury car segmentBMW took first place with 1907sales ahead of Audi (1820) andMercedes-Benz (1482).
