The wedding party consisted of Ruth’s sister and her good friend, and George’s brother and his good friend — who are all still living today. The couple have lived in Hukanui, Opiki, Tokumaru and Linton. Like most married men of the era, George was a working man and provided for his family. He worked as a milk vendor for 23 years and later for a dairy company in Shannon. Ruth has worked in clothing factories and recently worked for a Shannon underwear maker. She now does crafts, knitting and sewing to fill her time. George and Ruth have had it pretty hard in their later years. They lost their daughter Judith to cancer seven years ago, but her memory lives on in the couples hearts. However, the couple still make the most of each day and intend to continue enjoying each other’s company, and sharing the love with their family.

MONEY MATTERS

Understanding investment riskwith BERNARD LONG

All investments carry risk.Shares, property and bondsrise and fall in value. A bankor finance company coulddefault on paying interest ondeposits or debentures or failaltogether and not repay allor part of your money. TheGovernment does notguarantee any investment, including term deposits.

In fact, it has regulatedwhat would happen if a bankfailed. The regulations statethat if a bank fails itsshareholders, bondholdersand term deposit investors

may loseall or partof theirmoney toallow thebank tokeeptrading. That’syour

money at risk.Our work involves

understanding the risk ininvestments so we can makesure you are not taking morerisk than you are comfortablewith. We work out how muchinvestments could rise andfall in value.

This is called volatility.Volatility is not a bad thing ashigher volatility can givehigher returns. We also workout how likely it is aninvestment could failaltogether causing you tolose all your money. If wecannot work out the risk inan investment we don’trecommend it. Likewise, ifyou do not know the risk inan investment you shouldnot invest.

There are three ways todeal with risk: understand it,diversify it and takeprofessional advice.Diversifying means investing

in some cash, fixed interest, property and shares andholding a number of assets ineach category. That way ifone asset goes down or failsyour portfolio is onlyaffected a little bit. And Iprovide the advice.■ Bernard Long is anAuthorised Financial Adviserwith Goldridge Ltd. Everyone involved has aclear plan to make positivechanges which is great newsfor the region.

There have beenimpressive signs of progressbeing made on the river, all

This is great news on theback of the recent $540,000Government investment inthe future health of LakeHorowhenua.

BLUE BEAT

Lock it or lose itwith Graeme JarvisCommunity Constable

While crime overall is slowlytrending downwards, a greatresult for local police, there hasbeen a sudden increase in theftsfrom cars over recent weeks. Notonly has the area been verylocalised, the manner in whichthe offender/s is operating is alsovery consistent.

The offender/s is targetingvehicles left overnight parked onthe street, driveways andcarports, but more importantlythey are not being locked. Theoffender is targeting lose changeand at times is leaving othervaluables behind. He is pushingdoors closed to make themappear as though they are stillsecure but, in many cases, theyhave not been completely shut.

The message is clear, wherevehicles are not able to be lockedaway in a garage, please ensureall valuables are removed, or atleast locked away out of sight, preferably in the boot.

Following on from last weekwhen I mentioned a member ofthe public pursuing a stolen car,I have had another situationwhere a member of the publichas attempted to take the lawinto their own hands.

In this case a burglaryoccurred, and the owner decidednot to inform police in the firstinstance. He then began to makehis own enquires to recover thestolen property. Unfortunatelythe plan backfired and hedetermined quite quickly that itwas not going to be as simple ashe first thought. He then madehis complaint to police.

In thiscase, enquiriesleft for policehave beencomprom-ised andsomeavenues forenquiryhave been

eliminated altogether.Our local Neighbourhood

Policing Team is working onanother initiative, this timeaimed at driver education. Theprogramme is being run jointlywith the safety co-ordinator forHorizons Regional Council.

The scheme runs alongsimilar lines as diversion incriminal matters and providesanother outcome other than apecuniary one. Generally thescheme is offered to firstoffenders, and the infringementmust be at the low end of thescale, such as some licensingmatters, intersection and driverbehaviour offences.

At this stage just oneworkshop is on offer and will beheld in Taitoko School at 5pm onThursday April 10. It will run fortwo hours and is intended to befun, interactive and educational, and will focus on road safetyissues.

Drivers that qualify for thescheme will have been handed aflyer with their infringementnotices, advising them of thedetails and inviting them toattend. It is voluntary.

Anyone with enquiries cancontact the Levin SouthNeighbourhood Policing teamdirect on 06 368-9674.

Seminar on respiratory conditionsASTHMA STATISTICSOne in six adults and one in four of childrenin New Zealand experience asthmasymptoms (more than 600 000 Kiwis).Asthma is the most common cause ofadmission to hospital for children.Hospitalisation rates for asthma havemorethan doubled in the past 30 years.Asthma is the highest-ranking specificdisease in terms of quality, productive timelost to disability in males, and third highestfor females.Asthma disproportionately affects Maoriand Pacific Island people, and lower socio-economic groups. In 2006, according toMinistry of Health,132 New Zealanders died from asthma.Source: Asthma Foundation NZ

There is no cure for asthma that currentlyaffects one in six adults and one in fourchildren in New Zealand.

According to Daphne Barrett, secretaryof the Horowhenua Breathe Easy SupportGroup, the numbers of people sufferingfrom asthma and other respiratoryillnesses that cause shortness of breath, constant wheezing, chronic coughing andsinus problems is likely to be high in thedistrict.

‘‘Our group has 70 members but lookingat the asthma statistics, I don’t think thisnumber even scratches the surface of thetrue numbers of respiratory sufferers wehave, not once you start adding in peoplewho have chronic obstructive pulmonarydisease (COPD), allergies, hayfever andother bronchial conditions.’’

A seminar being held in Levin nextweek is aiming to help sufferers to manage

their condition and keep up-to-date withthe latest medical treatments.

The five guest speakers will include DrAlan Hull GP, Asthma Foundation chiefexecutive Angela Francis, Dr Kyle Perrin, respiratory consultant and medical advisorfor the Asthma foundation, RespiratoryFacilitator at Compass Health, BarbaraScott and Respiratory Nurse Practitionerand Leader, Victoria Perry.

OPEN DAY75TH ANNIVERSARY75TH ANNIVERSARY

SAT 5SAT 5THTH APRIL |APRIL | 11AM - 3PM11AM - 3PM

Levin and Horowhenua Vets (LHVC) are having an Open Day at 518Queen Street, Levin to celebrate our 75th anniversary. The practicehas undergone many changes in the past 75 years, growing in sizeand ability. It has evolved from a small collection of rooms behindthe old dairy factory in 1939 through various incarnations of oldtown houses to the two-storey building we now inhabit. Facilitieshave developed with the changing technology and knowledge andwe now have x-ray and ultrasound on site as well as many otherdiagnostic tests.

We have dedicated consulting and surgery rooms and a large airyreception area with both small and large animal products availableand have just started an on-line shop with home delivery.

We would love to show you through the clinic, so come and havea look around. There will be fun and games, numerous stands anddisplays, food and drink, specials and give-aways, and lots to lookat, with an official ceremony at 2pm. Our staff will be on hand toshow you around and explain what everything is for, so bring thefamily and have a great day.

Practice historyThe practice was the first in this area and started in 1939 withveterinarian Peter McGregor. Mr. McGregor, a Scotsman, wasemployed by the Levin Dairy Company in conjunction with theKuku and Shannon Dairy Companies. There were a number ofpractices starting up around New Zealand, working in closeassociation with dairy companies at this time. These werecalled Veterinary Clubs. Mr. McGregor worked from roomsbehind the Levin Dairy Company, an old accommodationblock, long since demolished.

In 1945 Ray Long took over. He covered an area fromShannon to Paraparaumu in a Ford Prefect car. The practicealso set up a branch in Otaki. Several vets worked there overthe years, including Bill Ridley, an Englishman who was therefor 17 years before retiring in 1984. The Levin Dairy Companywas taken over by the Wellington Dairy Farmers in 1974and the veterinary service became administered from thatcompany’s offices in Naenae. The practice was then knownas the Horowhenua West Coast Veterinary Club.

In 1979 the practice of Syd Thomas was purchased. Hispractice on The Avenue, Levin had been established in 1960catering for both farm and small animals. We have beenbased at our Queen Street location since 1979.

Hugh Bentall joined the practice in 1980 as a new graduate.Russ Beban became Senior Vet in 1983. Helen Beban, also a

vet, worked part time. The clinic was renamed as HorowhenuaVeterinary Services, still run as a Veterinary Club with electedfarmers serving as Directors.

In 1989 Russ and Helen Beban bought the business from theVet Club. They were joined a few years later by Hugh Bentallas a partner. This period saw a rapid expansion of the practiceto five full time vets. After several stages of addition to theclinic building and a merger with Levin Veterinary Centre in2001 to form LHVC, we continued to grow.

We moved into our purpose-built clinic in 2010, and now have12 veterinarians based here. This serves as the ideal base forour extensive production animal practice, as well as beingmuch-needed extra space for the companion animal side.

We are a Best Practice accredited clinic, which means thatour clinic has met and exceeded standards defined by theBest Practice committee of the New Zealand VeterinaryAssociation. Our vets and nurses are all constantlyup-skilling, with a range of continuing education programmes,to ensure that we have the most up-to-date information todeliver the best possible quality of care. The vets all havespecial interests, which means that complex cases can bereferred within the practice, drawing on a wide base of pooledknowledge. We are also lucky to be close to Massey University, and can refer cases there if necessary.

Large AnimalLHVC has been an integral part of the ruralcommunity in the Horowhenua since its inceptionas a Vet Club. We provide veterinary services fora large number of farming clients from Waikanaeto Foxton and further afield. Our enthusiasticteam of farm vets have fully-equipped vehiclesand are able to make farm visits at relativelyshort notice for scheduled work, as well ashaving a quick response to emergency calls.

As well as providing a full range of clinicalservices, much of our work, particularly in thedairy sector, is now associated with preventativeherd health management programmes andmaximizing farm production. This includestrace element monitoring, parasite control, herd vaccination programmes, mastitis control, facial eczema advice, lame cow management, locomotion scoring, body condition scoring, pregnancy testing and reproductive performanceprogrammes.

We have vets who are trained as InCalf advisorsand as Healthy Hoof consultants. We also have

vets with a special interest in milk qualitymanagement

The clinic is equipped with 4 portable scannersand we can scan whole herds or individual cowsas required. Cattle pregnancies can be aged ifthey are between 5 and 17 weeks post-mating.

All of our dairy, sheep and beef clients have anannual farm health check consultation, wherewe discuss your farm, any animal health orproduction issues that you are facing, and yourcurrent authorizations for prescription medicines. We are also involved with the Leptosure Program, and will go through your Leptospirosis riskmanagement plan and vaccination regime withyou during your consultation.

LHVC also has a worming programme for farmdogs/pets, and can mail the appropriate de-worming products out to you at regular intervals(usually every 3 months). Worming can easily beforgotten among the many other animal healthconcerns on the farm, so this can be very useful.

Small AnimalOver the last 75 years our appreciation of the role that cats anddogs play in our lives has changed dramatically. They are integralmembers of our family and as knowledge and technology hasdeveloped over time, so has our ability to provide pets with healthierand therefore better quality lives. The type of pets we have haschanged as well. There are many pets that were previously wereconsidered exotic; birds, fish, lizards, rats, guinea pigs and rabbitshave all become dearly loved companions.

We have higher expectations of what can be done for our pets, more in line with what is available in human medicine and surgery. The ability to take X-rays at the clinic would have been a rare andspecial thing 75 years ago. We have very high quality and modernanaesthetic machines, anaesthetic medications and monitoringequipment.

In the companion animal area we perform a wide variety ofdiagnostic, surgical and therapeutic procedures as well as a wholearray of consulting room services. Many diagnostic procedures canbe performed in-house on our laboratory equipment; these includeanalysis of blood samples, urine testing, or checking samplesunder a microscope. This allows us to perform complex diagnosticsquickly, especially after-hours. Some samples need to be couriered

to Palmerston North to be processed by a veterinary laboratory butthe delay is usually minimal. We have X-ray and ultrasound facilitieson-site.

We also perform a variety of different surgeries in the clinic, includingroutine surgery such as speys, neuters and lump removals. Wealso perform more complicated procedures such as orthopaedicsurgery involving pinning or plating broken bones; caesareans, and exploratory laparotomies to remove assorted stones, corncobs, toys, Christmas decorations, rubber bands, undergarments…etc…that dogs and cats love to eat!

Dental problems in pets are very common, so we do a lot of dentalwork, using our ultrasonic scaler and polisher. We have a powerfulcompressed-air-driven drill to makes extraction of large teeth muchfaster and smoother, with a more comfortable recovery for your pet.

We routinely use pain relief for our patients as we consider it to bean essential part of our practice; the relief of pain not only makesthe patient more comfortable, but can actually improve the healingand recovery of an injured or surgical patient.

Nicola has a special interest in animal behaviour and can help workthrough any behavioural issues you might face with your dog or cat.

The level of care available for both petsand farm animals has increased over time.Past practices have become outdated withchanges in technology and understandingand there have been dramatic increases inthe safety and effectiveness of medicines andprocedures.

In the last few years, fluid pumps have becomemore sophisticated. We are able to deliverextremely accurate amounts of medication indrips, allowing for continuous drug infusions.Wehave an in-house electrolyte analysis machinethat is essential for determining which fluid acritical patient needs and how fast they need toreceive it. Our in-house lab machines providealmost instant information where previously wehad to courier samples to an external laboratory;increasing our speed of diagnosis andtreatment, especially on weekends and publicholidays. The new x-ray developer producesx-rays quicker than previously allowing forclearer images and better diagnoses. Our high-tech compressed air-powered dental drill setmakes extracting teeth faster and easier, anda much less unpleasant experience for bothpatients and staff.

There are more developments in the pipeline. We are improving our on-line facilities, andhave started an on-line shop for food and

over-the-counter products. This gives youaccess to a much greater array of stock thanwe can practically supply in the clinic. Weare soon getting a computer in our receptionarea for you to see the whole range available. This system will have prescription medicationavailable in the near future. You will be ableto order your medications from home, so aslong as it has been authorised by one of ourveterinarians.

The only sure thing about the future is thatthings continue to change. Equipment that

is currently too expensive to be practicalwill become available. New medicineswill be developed, new tests will becomeavailable. The options available to the publicto be able to help their animals will increase. The possibilities are as endless as ourimaginations.

We are proud of what we do at Levin &Horowhenua Vets, and what we have to offeryou and you animals. Come along to our OpenDay and see how we can provide you with anexcellent level of care.

GREAT FOREST CHALLENGE

Don’t give up . . .Hi, I am Tania and I am training for the10km event at Great Forest Events April12. Each week I will update you with myprogress. Hopefully I will encourage youto join me on this journey and do theevent too.

I’m trying hard to keep my headfocused on the task ahead. Saturday April12 and it’s all on. I had a bit of a setbackwith a funny bug earlier in the week and Ihave been working more than normal so Ihaven’t been able to fit in as muchtraining as possible. But no excuses! Ihave still been out and about.

I had a few days of just feeling yuk, lethargic, simply under the weather. Iforced myself out on Sunday headingdown to the beach and with a littlerunning and walking I started to feel a bitbetter but still not 100 per cent so withabout 1.5km to go, my sneakers came offand I walked with my feet in the water therest of the way, still at a good pace mindyou.

It’s been another one of those weeks atwork with extra shifts, odd hours here

and there, solimited time to digmy heels into anyintense exerciseand to be honest itcompletely throwsmy schedule out ofwhack.

It is not reallythe best time to befeeling unwell andextra tired, I mustadmit. But I amstill focused anddetermined andhave fitted in

exercise when I have time. This week registrations have been

coming in thick and fast, we have had somany phone calls and enquiries about theevent. It’s fantastic that so many peopleare doing the GFE from around theregion.

While we have lots of locals taking partwe also have people coming from all overNew Zealand and even a lady flying infrom Texas! You can find out about someof the people taking part atwww.greatforest.org.nz

I am easing off the training a bit so mylegs are fresh and ready to go on April 12.I’ve got my mum, my husband and quite afew family and friends joining me,actually doing the event on the day withme, so it is a big event to look forward toin so many ways. With everyone there onthe day the pressure is on me to do welland feel good coming over the finish line.

I know I will do my best on the daygiving it a 100 per cent. But regardless ofwhat my time is or what my place is, I amhappy I have come so far on this journeyas I can do so much more than I could afew short weeks back.

Remember there are no entries on theday so you must enter by April 9. Pop inand see me at Levin Aquatic Centre orgive us a call on 06 368-0070.

This week’s training: Swim 300m x 3,Run 5km x 1, Walk-Run 10km x 1, Trig x 2,Aquacise Class x 1.

Quote of the week: The moment youare ready to quit is usually the momentright before the miracle happens. Don’tgive up!

GOOD START: A hearty breakfast cooked by Police is a great way to end FridayCactus and prepare for classes.

LVN040414manawatu1

RUNNING through the streets of Foxtoncarrying logs was a shock to the systemof many.

By principal BRUCEMcINTYRE

On Saturday evening 23 of our students willgraduate at a special dinner at the FoxtonRSA after eight weeks of participating in anarmed forces programme designed toextend mental and physical capabilities. Ithas included teamwork, goal-setting,leadership, discipline and plenty ofexercise.

Cactus (Combined AdolescentChallenge Training Unit and Support) hasrequired three days a week of 6am startswith an hour of exercise before showeringand breakfast. A team-building ormentoring exercise or talk from a guestspeaker follows breakfast before they headto classes at 9am.

Saturday is their longest day, starting at6am and finishing at 4pm. Students fromacross all year levels and from a mixture ofbackgrounds have been taking part. Whatdo they think of Cactus now that it isalmost over?

The following comments are typical ofthe group and are illuminating:

‘‘I did Cactus because I wanted toimprove my fitness for sport, and it has. Ithas also helped me with my teamworkskills. It is way harder than I thought, especially the early starts, but I’m reallyglad I’ve done it,’’ Carla — Year 11.

‘‘I’m loving it! I’ve gained a lot in myfitness, but my self-discipline is the biggestthing I’ve gained in. I listen to my mumnow,’’ Joe — Year 10.

‘‘Discipline and teamwork are thebiggest things I have improved in.Tolerating others is sometimes hard butI’ve learned to because we have to work asa team,’’ Monique — Year 12.

‘‘I thought it would be a breeze but it isintense army training and I’ve loved all ofit, even running with the pole on ourshoulders and the early starts. I’ve learnedhow to work as a team in tough situations,’’

Leonta — Year 11.I would like to

congratulate all thestudents for theircommitment andperseverance. Theywill never be thesame again.

The programmehas been led by the full contingent of policefrom Foxton, Foxton Beach and Shannon, supported by personnel from the Foxtonand Foxton Beach Fire Brigades, Life to theMax, Te Awahou Boxing Club and theFoxton Surf Life Saving Club.

I would like to thank these members ofour community for their dedicated effortson behalf of our students.

I have no doubt that the programme hasbrought about positive change in the livesof the 23, which will better set them up forthe years ahead.
