There’s something for everyone …The best thing about welcoming visitors to our picturesque region is that there is always a sight, a scene, a taste, a tour, a festival, a foreshore, a trail, a tide, a sunset, a sunrise, a view, a vista that will totally captivate, relax and entrance even the most hardened soul.

Tucked away on our waterway foreshores are villages waiting to be explored, breathtaking vistas to be had from towering mountain lookouts, bushland trails to be discovered by bike or on foot and local produce, including seafood, like no other.

You can shop in our malls, follow winding roads to ferries which criss-cross the mighty Hawkesbury and its tributaries, hire out a houseboat or tinny, picnic or camp under the stars, soak up the atmosphere in our historic pubs, pick your own produce from our farms, stay in hotel style or sleep in rustic sheep station bungalows.

The Hornsby Region is not only famous for its Waterways and National Parks, but is fast becoming renown for its abundance of Markets and Festivals. Hornsby Mall and its surrounding suburbs are home to a variety of boutique and charity markets, an antiques fair, our famous woodchop festival, Festival of the Arts, the Bushland Country festival, Christmas Spectacular, Australia Day celebrations, weekly Organic Produce markets – in fact there is something to delight every member of your family, from the ankle-biters to the thirty-somethings, from the grey nomads to the wise elders.

We invite you to take a trip to the Hornsby Region … stay awhile … drink in our atmosphere … and return home refreshed …

Enjoy!

WHAT’S ON 2013-14

Page 10: Hornsby Shire Visitors Guide

Hornsby Mountain Bike TrailIf you’re an active kind of person your visit to Hornsby Shire won’t be complete until you visit the new Mountain

Bike Trail, which is located in bushland just a few minutes walk from Hornsby Station. The only trail of its kind in the

region, it winds through 3.2 kilometres of the picturesque Old Mans Valley. The trail was several years in the planning

and care has been taken to ensure riders will have a great time while minimising disturbance to the environment.

The one-metre-wide natural surface trail (known as a ‘single track’) has been designed with gentle gradients that

are not prone to water erosion and much of it looks like a regular bushwalking trail.

The trail comprises a combination of handmade bushland trails and flowing machine-made trails, maximising the

fun factor for riders. At the bottom of the trail is a “Green Loop” that can be safely ridden by children and mountain

biking novices. From there it is possible to build up through the various levels until you’re able to ride the full course

of rollers, jumps and berms.

To ensure the safety of riders and good trail condition for all riders, trail closures will occur during extreme fire

danger periods and wet trail conditions. After prolonged or very heavy rain, the trail may be closed for a number

of days so the surface can dry out. To find out whether the trail is open visit hornsby.nsw.gov.au/mbt or check out

the Twitter account twitter.com/HornsbyMBT.

More stages are planned in 2014.

Road CyclingNot all two-wheeled activity has to involve jumps,

cycling routes at all levels of difficulty. These range

from the charming streets of Beecroft in the south of

the Shire to the steep hills along Smugglers Ridge in

the north. Whatever you’re looking for, you’re bound

BushwalkingHornsby Shire has a number of great bushwalks on

offer. Here are five of our favourites. For downloadable

maps of these and other great bushwalks in the Shire

see hornsby.nsw.gov.au/bushwalks. There you will find

a 28 page booklet of various walks as well as individual

maps of the walks below.

Saltmarsh Boardwalk, Crosslands Reserve, Hornsby Heights CIRCUIT EASY TO MODERATE 20 MINS-1 HOUR

Enter Crosslands Reserve at the end of Somerville

Road, Hornsby Heights. This track follows a section of

the Great North Walk and passes through mangroves,

saltmarsh, woodlands and forest areas. The Boardwalk

takes about 20 minutes return. There is an extended

1.2 kilometre track beyond which is of moderate

difficulty and takes about 1 hour return.

Callicoma Walk, Cherrybrook CIRCUIT MODERATE 2-3 HOURS

This attractive 5 kilometre circuit through rainforest

and woodland has two main trackheads. The first is

located at the corner of Shepherds and Macquarie

Drives at the Lakes of Cherrybrook reserve and picnic

area, near the Cherrybrook shops. The second is at the

corner of Francis Greenway and Macquarie Drives.

Heritage Bridges Walk, Hornsby ONE-WAY MODERATE TO DIFFICULT 4-6 HOURS

wetlands in Hornsby and ends at the bottom of

only walk one way, a car can be left at the

Galston Gorge picnic area.

Blue Gum Walk, Hornsby CIRCUIT MODERATE TO DIFFICULT 2.5 HOURS

This 4.3 kilometre track is for those who love to

explore. Admire the stately stand of Sydney blue

gums in Old Mans Valley, as well as a magnificent

leaning angophora that has been struck by lightning.

beauty of Waitara Creek and admire unspoiled scenic

views. The track begins at Rosemead Road, Hornsby,

gums, then continues over exposed sandstone flats

with rock pools, cascades and a large overhanging

waterfall. It has two minor steep sections. Walkers

may park a car at either end or catch the train back

to the start.

Rich in opportunities to experience the plants, animals and cultural history of the Sydney Basin, a visit to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Berowra Valley National, Berowra Valley Regional Park or the spring flower show at Muogamarra can be fun for the whole family. You can explore the parks yourself or join our Discovery Guides who conduct walks, talks & tours across the Region all year round.

BEROWRA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK AND BEROWRA VALLEY REGIONAL PARKBerowra Valley follows both sides of Berowra Creek south from Berowra Waters to Thornleigh. It contains a diverse range of plant and animal species, many of which are threatened. To the north is Berowra Valley National Park where you’ll be surprised by the relatively untouched character of this park on the fringes of Sydney’s urban area. With the Great North Walk meandering along the length of the reserve you can do a little or a lot in a day. Take some time with the kids to enjoy the view from Barnett’s Reserve in Berowra Heights pointing out the path of Berowra Creek from Crosslands Reserve to Berowra Waters and looking out towards the adjoining Muogamarra and Marramarra Reserves. Or come and enjoy the serenity of a picnic at Crosslands Reserve. To the south is Berowra Valley Regional Park where locals regularly enjoy walking from the surrounding suburbs of Cherrybrook, Pennant Hills and Thornleigh. Some tracks are designated for dog walking. Please observe the signs.Alight at Berowra, Mt Ku-ring-gai, Asquith, Hornsby, Normanhurst, Thornleigh or Pennant Hills railway stations and make your way to the edge of the park’s to join the various tracks and trails that meander through the valley or park at Stringybark Ridge, Crosslands or Barnetts Reserves putting you into the heart of the park.

Crosslands is a popular campsite located on the banks of Berowra Creek in a large open grassed area with barbecues and toilets bookings are through Hornsby Shire Council on 02 9847 6791.

KU-RING-GAI CHASE NATIONAL PARKKu-ring-gai Chase stretches from Barrenjoey Light House and Pittwater in the east as far south as Wahroonga, west to the freeway and north to Brooklyn. The initial park was founded in 1894 thanks to Eccleston du Faur who campaigned to protect it from commercial flower pickers, thus making it the second oldest national park in NSW.The park is steeped in Aboriginal and European history. There are plenty of accessible walking tracks, suitable for the most avid of walkers to the weekend ramblers. Two popular walks are the Mangrove Boardwalk (~300m) and Birrawanna loop Track (~2 km). Bird watching and recreational fishing are also popular activities within the park. Bobbin Head is one of the region’s most popular picnic sites. Its large expansive flats along Cowan Creek make it a most wonderful location to bring the family. There are free BBQs, shelters and a children’s playground. Apple Tree Bay boat ramp precinct just near Bobbin Head provides convenient access for boat owners to explore the picturesque waterways of Cowan Creek. There are two canoe launches in the Park for those people wishing to bring their own canoe or kayak down. Boat hire is available from Empire Marina and paddle boats from the Bobbin Inn Café on weekends and school holidays depending on the weather.Kalkari Discovery Centre attracts a crowd with their kangaroos, wallabies, fresh water turtles, brush turkeys and parrots within the free range enclosure and magnificent lookout over Cowan Creek. The Chase Alive volunteers can assist with information on upcoming walks, talks and school holiday activities.

Park entry fees apply. Call the Metro North East Region Information Centre for more details.

TOP PICNIC& CAMPING SPOTSIf you are looking for a top picnic spot, the Bushland Shire is the place to be!

Within the Park, Council and National Parks and Wildlife Services have numerous picturesque

places with picnic facilities. Open fires are discouraged at most times owing to bushfire risk,

so visitors should carry lightweight walkers’ gas barbecue equipment. Camping facilities are

restricted to the Council owned section of the riverside flats at Crossslands.

1. Bellamy Street, Pennant Hills Conveniently situated at one of the original trackheads

of the Benowie section of the Great North Walk for picnics at the start or end of the walk, this grassy area is surrounded by bushland and has easy access from the nearby car park at the northern end of Bellamy Street. Within sight of nearby houses, it is sunny spot at midday and provided with a garbage bin and tap water.

2. Historic Quarry, Thornleigh This is an atmospheric, shady picnic area surrounded

by tall gum trees, set within the high rock walls of an old sandstone quarry. Access, which is on foot along rocky fire trails (about 250m ), is from Timbarra Road or De Saxe Close in Thornleigh or (about 500 m) from the Bellamy Street trackhead. Logs for seating are the only facilities. The Historic Quarry is popular with local youth groups for evening barbecues.

3. The Jungo on Berowra Creek The Jungo is a sunny clearing with bush all round. It

is approached on foot, along bushwalking tracks from Bellamy Street or Boundary Road trackheads, or on rocky fire trails from Schofield Parade in Pennant Hills or part of the Callicoma walk from Cherrybrook.

Nearby, hidden in thick bush, is the junction of Berowra and Zig Zag Creeks. This spot, now filled with sediment, was once known as the ‘junction swimming hole’, one explanation of the ‘jungo’ name of the area.

4. Lakes Reserve, Cherrybrook The suburban park Lakes Reserve, Cherrybrook, is a

waterbird haven which lies outside the National Park. It is a convenient place to start walks into the Park. It has good picnic facilities and is close to shops and a garage. Ample parking is available nearby.

5. Rosemead Road, Hornsby This pretty park in a tall blue gum setting is the

starting point for the trackhead to Fishponds and the Great North Walk. It is readily accessible by car at the northern end of Rosemead Road or can be approached on foot, down 230 bush steps from Quarry Road and Hornsby station. There is tap water, as well as an electric barbecue and roofed picnic tables.

6. Top of Galston Gorge This small paved picnic area, easily reached from an

adjacent parking area for three cars, has picnic tables. It catches the afternoon sun and has excellent views over the bush-lined Berowra Creek valley in Galston Gorge. It is situated next to Galston Road, near the first of the hairpin bends, about 700 m west of Montview Road in Hornsby Heights.

7. Tunks Ridge This bush camp ground is situated on the Great North

Walk on top of Tunks Ridge in a pleasant woodland setting. The area has small clearings for three or four small tents, and wooden seats. Drinking water is not available. The site is approached only on foot along fire trails about 5 km from Dural or Hornsby, or up the very steep bush track about 700 m from the car park near the Galston Gorge bridge over Berowra Creek. The only evidence of civilisation at night is the faint noise of cars negotiating the hairpin bends in Galston Gorge!

8. Crosslands Reserve Crosslands Reserve is a major recreation reserve and

the best-equipped of the picnic places within the Park. The extensive open grassed areas, surrounded by tall gums, are popular with families for picnics and games on fine weekends throughout the year. The area is well maintained by Council, which provides children’s playground equipment, tap water, barbecues, picnic tables, bins, toilets and parking for many cars.

getting away... from it all

28.

Page 29: Hornsby Shire Visitors Guide

It is a recognised camping ground on the Great North Walk. Group camping is possible but requires prior booking with Hornsby Council.

Access is by car down a partially sealed road, starting at a gate (locked at night) at the northern end of Somerville Road at Hornsby Heights. Alternatively, access is on foot along the Great North Walk, from Galston Gorge (6 km to the south) or from Berowra or Mt Kuring-gai Railway Stations about 6 km to the north and west.

Berowra Creek is broad and tidal at Crosslands. It is popular for fishing and provides excellent canoeing at high tide for many kilometres upstream to Rocky Fall Rapids and downstream over the sandflats to Berowra Waters. Visitors do swim at Crosslands, but should be aware of potential risk from algae or stormwater pollution at certain times. Council rangers display signs when significant risks occur. Across the Creek are a private Field Studies Centre and a Scout Camp.

9. Barnetts Reserve, Berowra This site is high over Berowra Creek Valley and has superb views

downstream to Berowra Waters and upstream to Crosslands. It is accessible from the western end of Barnetts Road in Berowra Heights. A short walk of about 150 m from the carpark through a quiet and pretty woodland reserve leads to the panoramic views. Wooden tables and water are provided for picnickers, plus there is a disabled access pathway.

10. Berowra Waters Picnic tables, electric barbecues, tap water, bins and toilets are available

near the boat-launching ramp on the western side of Berowra Waters. Access is by car along Galston Road from Galston or across the car ferry from the Hornsby side of Berowra Creek. Access on foot to the eastern side of the car ferry is along the Great North Walk. Restaurants, take-away food shops, scenic river cruises and boat hire are available here. This is a popular area, especially on summer weekends, when it can sometimes be difficult to find a car parking spot, and when the ferry queues may be long.

TOP 10 CHECK LIST for Boating Safety from Marine Rescue NSW1. Tell your local Marine Rescue radio base when

you go out and when you’ll be back. Log On with your marine radio so Marine Rescue knows you’re out there and when you’re due back.

2. Wear your lifejackets. Lifejackets save lives – but only when you wear them. NSW regulations require you to wear lifejackets at certain times. Marine Rescue NSW recommends you wear them at all times when boating.

3. Travel at a safe speed and keep a good look out. A safe speed is one where you can stop fast in an emergency. A good look out means the skipper is always aware of conditions around the boat.

4. Check your mechanicals and electricals before you go. More breakdowns are caused by mechanical and electric faults than any other cause.

5. Check your safety equipment before you go. Lifejackets; marine radio; anchor and chain or line (attached to the boat!); emergency flares; EPIRB if going out 2 nautical miles or more; bailing bucket; fire bucket; fire extinguisher; navigation lights, orange V-sheet; waterproof torch. These are all mandatory and smart skippers will also have First Aid and Tool Kits on board.

6. Make sure your fuel is fresh. Old fuel causes serious problems that can leave you stranded at sea. The Boat Owners Association says bio fuels are also causing some concern.

7. Call your local Marine Rescue radio base for a radio check. The Marine Rescue operator will tell you if your radio signal is strong and clear – or if it’s not, so you can fix it before you need it.

8. Check the weather forecast before you go. Go to www.bom.gov.au first. Then listen for weather updates on your marine radio or call your local Marine Rescue base for the latest information.

9. Know your position. If you break down out there or any other emergency strikes, we need to know where you are to come and help.

10. Take extreme care crossing bars. If you’ve never crossed the bar you want to cross, do not attempt it without getting local advice. Then prepare and plan your crossing. If in doubt, don’t go out.

Sitting on Hornsby Shire’s northern border – the picturesque Hawkesbury River – Brooklyn is an ideal place to visit.

Dangar IslandA short ferry ride from Brooklyn, Dangar Island’s European history stretches all the way back to 1788 when Governor

Phillip camped here. Going back much further, it was a gathering place for members of the Guringai language group

and evidence still remains of their engravings, middens and rock shelters. A highlight is Bradleys Beach, ideal for

a picnic.

McKell ParkLocated at the end of Dangar Road, this scenic park offers great views of the Hawkesbury. It features barbecues,

picnic areas, toilets and an enclosed swimming area. The children’s playground has recently had a make-over,

with new pirate-themed play equipment.

Saltmarsh BoardwalkThis track passes through mangroves, saltmarsh, woodlands and forest areas with past evidence of Aboriginal

occupation. The boardwalk that has been erected to protect the vegetation makes for easy walking. Barbecues,

picnic areas and a playground are also on offer.

Bar IslandRich in Aboriginal and European history, this uninhabited island is well worth a visit. Among the historic sites

are a cottage, church and cemetery, as well as Aboriginal middens. Enjoy the native flora and fauna, making sure

to keep an eye out for the threatened glossy black cockatoo and whistling kites.

Kangaroo PointOne of Hornsby Shire’s most beautiful recreation spots, with superb panoramic views of the Hawkesbury River

and the rail bridge that crosses it. Keep an eye out for major improvements that are planned there, including

a new restaurant and kiosk.

ONSITEWORKSHOP

The original or old side of Hornsby Shopping precinct, Hornsby Westside grew up around the railway station after the line was extended to the Upper North Shore in 1884. The area was typified by roadside shops which included the grocer, draper, chemist, deli, greengrocer newsagent, tailor, butcher and the original Railway Hotel.

Hornsby Westside is also the civic heart of Hornsby. Opposite the heritage listed Hornsby Park you will find the Hornsby Council Chambers and administration offices, Hornsby Court House, Hornsby Police Station and Hornsby Post Office. Next to Hornsby Park is the TAFE which was originally the site of Hornsby Public School built in 1922.

The new Hornsby Aquatic Centre is finally being constructed in Hornsby Park (plans for completion by end of 2013) and will be a huge attraction for all.

While some of the old shops still remain, many have gained a new life with Hornsby Westside becoming a popular Coffee Precinct boasting interesting eateries and specialty stores. The art deco Odeon Cinema which was built in 1914 can still provide movie-goers with that Hollywood Experience.

Long held family businesses such as Hornsby Tailors and Forbes Footwear provide testimony to those who can keep up with the changing times and fashions, and still be relevant in the 21st century.

The Cenotaph in memory of those who served in many wars is the centrepiece of annual remembrance services coordinated by the adjacent Hornsby RSL Sub Branch and Hornsby RSL Club. Undergoing recent major renovations, Hornsby RSL Club is one of the star attractions of the North Shore.

Hornsby Railway Station is the junction for the North Shore Line and the Main Line which makes it the ideal base to explore other parts of Sydney.

So for a taste of what Hornsby used to be like, don’t forget to take a Walk on the Westside!

WHAT WE TOUCH TURNS TO GOLDAfter working for over 20 years for his father, Kurt Seifert, in the centre of Sydney where building renovation caused the business to move closer to home, Kurt Seifert Jewellers opened their shop at 1A William Street Hornsby.“This was the best thing we could have done,” said Daniel Seifert. “My son started an apprenticeship making him the third generation jeweller.” After three years in Hornsby, Kurt Seifert Jewellers has quickly built a strong friendship with many locals, who now are proudly wearing fine pieces of their original jewellery.“I have often been told, that the reason for entrusting their jewellery with Kurt Seifert Jewellers, is that after talking to friends, the Kurt Seifert name would be recommended,” said Daniel Seifert.“Clients feel confident dealing with a family business which operates its own workshop.”Here at Kurt Seifert Jewellers we are happy to answer your questions about jewellery and help you with any advice. YOU’LL NOT FIND ANOTHER… LIKE WALLAROBBA...If you’re looking for a taste of culture during your stay in Hornsby Shire you should definitely add Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre to your itinerary.

Located in central Hornsby, it is the artistic hub of the region, with a constant stream of exhibitions showing off the works of both locally and nationally renowned artists. The gallery was originally a homestead, built in 1903, but it has been transformed by Hornsby Council into a high-quality gallery that won the 2012 Local Government and Shires Association award for an improved cultural facility. Other facilities at the centre include a community art studio, a purpose-built printmaking room and an artists’ lounge. Wallarobba is located at 25 Edgeworth David Avenue, Hornsby. To stay up to date with all its exhibitions visit hornsby.nsw.gov.au.

FESTIVAL OF THE ARTSMeanwhile, if you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Hornsby Shire between 25 October and 1 December, 2013, you’re in for a special cultural treat because that is when Festival of the Arts is on. Plays, concerts and exhibitions are just scratching the surface of what is on offer as the artistically minded people of the region show off their talents from one end of the Shire to the other. For more information, including the soon-to-be-published full schedule of events, visit hornsby.nsw.gov.au/fota or phone 9847 6893.
