BE PROVIDED TO THE ENGINEER, WHO WILL INSTRUCT

THE ENGINEERING WORKS.

1. IN PRE-CAST CONCRETE MANHOLES, THE LOWEST PRE-CAST SECTION OF
SHAFT USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MANHOLE SHALL BE AT LEAST
250mm IN HEIGHT AND THIS SHALL BE BEDDED 100mm INTO THE CONCRETE
BASE SUPPORTED INITIALLY AT THREE PLACES BY BRICKS. THE HEIGHT OF
SECTIONS ABOVE THIS SHALL BE ARRANGED TO ENSURE THAT A MINIMUM
NUMBER OF JOINTS OCCUR.
2. JOINTS BETWEEN PRE-CAST CONCRETE MANHOLE RINGS SHALL BE
EFFECTIVELY CAULKED FROM THE INSIDE WITH 3:1 SAND CEMENT MORTAR
OR OTHER SEALING METHOD AS APPROVED BY THE DIRECTOR: WATER AND
SANITATION.
3. STEP-IRONS ARE NOT REQUIRED.
4. THE CONCRETE BASES SHALL BE CAST WITHIN STEEL FORMWORK OR OTHE
RAPPROVED ALTERNATIVE FORMWORK. ALL CONCRETE TO BE ADEQUATELY
VIBRATED. 20 MPa CONCRETE SHALL BE USED, WITH A RECOMMENDED
MAXIMUM SIZE OF STONE AGGREGATE OF 19mm.
5. FOR ANGLES OF INTERSECTION EXCEEDING 10°, STANDARD CHANNEL BENDS,
CUT TO SUIT WHERE NECESSARY, SHALL BE USED. BELOW 10° TWO STRAIGHT
SECTIONS SHALL BE USED, CUT AND MITRED TO SUIT.
6. BITUMEN COATING ON OUTSIDE PIPE SURFACE TO BE ROUGHENED BEFORE
CONCRETING IN.
7. CONCRETE TOPPING FOR THE 20mm THICK LAYER TO THE BENCHING SHALL

TO THE APPROVAL OF THE DIRECTOR: WATER AND SANITATION.
11. THE USE OF COMPOSITE JUNCTIONS CONSISTING OF AN INTEGRATED
Y-JUNCTION WITH A 45° BEND FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF SEWERAGE ERF
CONNECTIONS, RAMP MANHOLES AND BACKDROP MANHOLES WILL BE
SUBJECT TO THE APPROVAL BY THE DIRECTOR: WATER AND SANITATION. A
SAMPLE OF COMPOSITE JUNCTION, OTHER THAN THE COMPOSITE JUNCTION

AND MANHOLES AT WHICH CONNECTIONS ARE REQUIRED AND
REPORT ANY DISCREPANCIES TO THE ENGINEER PRIOR TO ANY
CONSTRUCTION.
12. TOPSOIL TO BE REMOVED TO A NOMINAL DEPTH OF 150mm,
STOCKPILED AND MAINTAINED FOR THE DURATION OF THE
WORKS.
13. ALL CUT AND FILL EMBANKMENTS TO BE GRASSED AND
PROTECTED WITH SOILSAVER OR SIMILAR EROSION CONTROL
BLANKETS AS PER PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS.
14. EXISTING TREES WITHIN THE SITE SHALL BE SURVEYED,
CO-ORDINATES OF THE TREE POSITIONS WILL NEED TO BE
PROVIDED TO THE ENGINEER, WHO WILL INSTRUCT THE
CONTRACTOR TO REMOVE ALL TREES THAT IMPACT THE
ENGINEERING WORKS.
15. SPECIALIST CONTRACTOR TO PROVIDE PIPE LAYOUT PROPOSAL
FOR APPROVAL.
