The Hornbill Festival

Hornbill, the majestic bird for Nagas is a symbol of beauty, fertility - reproductive and agricultural - and is

perceived to possess social values similar to those of humans. Hornbill is a bird of festival as learnt from

legends and songs.

The 16 major tribes & many sub tribes of the Naga community gather at the Heritage Complex in Kohima

to give an exclusive insight to their traditions. Tourists throng the place during this week long festival to

witness the incredible festival !

Hornbill Festival is the platform where all the tribes of Nagaland and neighbouring states get together in

full festive mood with their attires on display. All the days of the festival are filled with dances, songs,

games and with full of merrymaking, all which enthuse the spirit of the year long cultivation of the

farmers.

Nagaland offers exquisite beauty with its breathtaking mountains moulded perfectly for a exotic

experience. Each Naga village is unique with their traditions and customs. A visit to the state will

introduce you to their life style. Explore the limitless lush sub-tropical rainforests by nature treks or set

out birding. If you are left spellbound by the terrace farming, just walk down with the farmers to their

fields and be a part of their farming experience.

Witness the Naga Tribes & their lifestyle. Each tribe has its own way of maintaining its distinctive cultural

traditions and customs, through various forms of performing arts, which are an integral part of Naga

festivals. Each of the tribal communities that dwell in the hills can be distinguished by the colourful and

intricately designed costumes, jewellery and beads that its members wear. The traditional ceremonial

attire of each tribe is different from that of the other. Their headgear is made of finely woven bamboo

and adorned with boar's teeth and hornbill's feathers, and ivory armlets.

The annual event which takes place form the 1st to 7th December at Kisama, the heritage complex which

is about 12km away from Kohima, the state capital.
