MICROPUMP OPERATION
•Actuator acts to decrease or increase pump chamber •Fluid is drawn into the pump during expansion of diaphragm •Fluid is forced out during contraction of diaphragm •The pressure and flow rate generated by a micropump depends on:
•Stroke volume •Dead volume •Pump operating frequency •Fluid properties •Valve properties

MICROPUMP OPERATION
•Stroke volume strongly depends on actuator characteristics
•Some piezoelectric actuators are modeled as displacement sources.
Displacement (stroke volume) is limited by mech. failure criterion
•Some piezoelectric actuators are modeled as pressure sources.
Stroke volume is limited by stiffness of the actuator
•Pumps are designed to operate near resonant frequency of the diaphragm to enhance performance. •Bubbles significantly affect the pump performance.
