THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF DESIGN
PennDesign is an inventive place of learning where the diverse fields of architecture, planning, preservation, landscape architecture and the fine arts come together on shared ground. At PennDesign we are dedicated to design that is creative in nature and transformative in impact.
No other school is better positioned to capitalize on the opportunities for interdisciplinary research and study that the integrated nature of PennDesign’s diverse departments affords our community. In a collaborative environment that fosters inquiry and experimentation, faculty and students seek to recast the distinction between theory and practice, expand knowledge and invention through research, and contribute works of value and beauty.
In order to remain on the forefront and push the boundaries of these fields, several needs emerge as the top priorities to secure PennDesign’s future and place in the world of design.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF DESIGN
INTERNATIONAL IN SCOPE
Whether through recruitment or learning opportunities, we seek to engage the
broader world beyond University borders. Faculty and students from PennDesign
travel the world to test their research skills, propose visions that address challenging
issues of society and equity, and prepare to work successfully with across cultures
and in other countries.
Serving as working laboratories, traveling studios offer the opportunity to engage in
complex real-world design problems. With past locations including Tokyo, Haiti, and
Czechoslovakia, the exposure to new cultures, locales and people stimulate creative
thinking and a broader understanding of complex design issues.
Investment in international research, study and student aid make possible tangible
connections among societies dedicated to improving quality of life for all citizens.

INTERNATIONAL IN SCOPE
COMMITMENT TO THE COLLABORATIVE
Designers play critical roles in the success of our global economy both as agents of
social change and as leaders in sustainable solutions for communities. Collaboration
represents the best opportunity to capitalize on the collective knowledge of
PennDesign. We want to embolden our community’s shared experience across
departments to extend the frontiers of design practice, research and policy.
Support for new initiatives in emerging arenas of student experience, interdisciplinary
partnership, and dissemination of our school’s knowledge and leadership will leverage
PennDesign’s reputation as the singular collaborative learning environment for
design.

COMMITMENT TO THE COLLABORATIVE
BUILDING A WORLD CLASS FACULTY
A distinguished faculty is determined by our ability to attract and retain far-reaching
expertise, premier intellectual capital, and emergent research interests across the
fields of design.
Our goal is to endow all department chairs and significantly expand endowed
professorships while providing our talented faculty the resources they need to lead.
Endowed chairs and faculty positions enable us to recruit top candidates from
around the world and expand research opportunities, demonstrating the power of
PennDesign.

BUILDING A WORLD CLASS FACULTY
RECRUITING THE BEST TALENT
At the heart of PennDesign, students are our school’s distinction. It is essential that
our students can attend PennDesign regardless of need and without the barrier of
restrictive accumulated debt.
Student aid also is a critical component to competing successfully with our peer
institutions for top talent. Support for financial aid is the cornerstone to recruit and
secure the very best students. Globally, fellowship support for international students
strengthens our international presence and relationships.
An exemplary and diverse student community is paramount to growing PennDesign’s
preeminence and global impact.

RECRUITING THE BEST TALENT
INFRASTRUCTURE FOR INQUIRY
The belief that art and design can change attitudes and perspectives resonates
at PennDesign. Gifts to support the central mission of our academic departments
and programs facilitate a pattern of experimentation, production and independent
learning for our school.
Architecture merges the expressive with the practical. Our young architects are prepared to define, defend, and progress our built future with innovative thinking, responsive policy, and conscious design.
City Planning faculty and students demonstrate the ability of designers to transform urban places and evoke new ways of understanding the assets of the past and the potential of the future.
Landscape Architecture is preeminent in the world today, creating leaders in the field of innovative design as informed by ecology, the history of ideas, techniques of construction, new media, and contemporary urbanism.
Historic Preservation is integrated to produce professionals responsive to the historic environment in design, adaptive use, planning, and management of buildings, cities, and regions.
Fine Arts hold a special place at the creative center of PennDesign. Painters, sculptors and ceramicists study alongside animators, digital media artists, photographers and graphic designers and share the exploration of new directions for their individual and collaborative works.

INFRASTRUCTURE FOR INQUIRY
MEYERSON HALL: GATEWAY TO THE UNIVERSITY
Standing uniquely at the entrance to the University’s campus, Meyerson Hall is a hub for design education and discourse. The Master Plan celebrates Meyerson Hall’s unique location and capitalizes on PennDesign’s capacity to be the first to welcome the world to the University.
Identified needs include increased and enhanced spaces for studios, flexible spaces for collaborative research, and cutting edge environments for exhibitions and symposiums. Common areas foster interaction with the community and boost PennDesign’s commitment to collective knowledge and
culture. Exterior spaces are integrated to create flexible environments for the entire University campus.
The long-term vision for redesigning PennDesign’s campus will unfold in three phases:
Phase 1 Expand and improve studio and common space for the greatest impact on learning and research, and address the most pressing infrastructure needs of the School’s buildings.
Phase 2 Update faculty offices and research space to foster collaborative working environments.
Phase 3 Define the entrance to the University campus with a new addition to Meyerson Hall that transforms the building’s façade.
