How does Horizon 2020 work?
• Run by the European Commission
• 2 year work programmes
• Competitive calls (historic 19% success rate)
• 3 partners in 3 countries (in most cases)
• 3-11 months from application to grant
• Criteria: EXCELLENCE, impact, implementation
• Reimbursement: 100% direct costs (70% close to market) + 25% indirect costs

Europe and Wales: Investing in your future Ewrop & Chymru: Buddsoddi yn eich dyfodol
Europe & Wales: Investing in your future
Worth thinking about?
‘Cons’
• Very competitive
• 3 partners in 3 countries (in most cases)
• It takes time
‘Pros’
• Not ‘all about the cash’ but you do get some
• Visibility, networking and new markets
• Can be a strategic decision with long term benefits
• You’re in demand: – more innovation required,
– looking for multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral bids,
– specific targets on SME involvement
Companies
are already
doing
this… (FP7 –
predecessor
to Horizon
2020)

Practicalities
• Find a call – Work Programme or Participant Portal
• Find partners (if a collaborative call)
• Create an account/register on the Participant Portal
Meanwhile:
• 6 months may be needed to: meet the consortium, agree concept, test concept with experts, make adjustments, agree who will write what, divide work packages, write and meet again to finalise application
Ewrop & Chymru: Buddsoddi yn eich Dyfodol
Europe and Wales: Investing in your future Ewrop & Chymru: Buddsoddi yn eich dyfodol
Europe & Wales: Investing in your future
Considerations • Novel and important solution on EU/global scale?
• It’s competitive – do you have a Plan B?
• Participant or co-ordinator? Single applicant?
• Partner search – your supply chain?
• Use expert advice – National Contact Points (NCPs)
• Plan for impact (e.g. through commercialisation)
• Are you the best organisation/consortium to deliver this?
• Deliver the EU’s aims, as described in the call – evaluation is “as is”, not “as could be”
• Don’t forget IP

Example Call Text NMBP-06-2017: Improved material durability in buildings and
infrastructures, including offshore
Specific Challenge: Durability is a key criterion for materials in many applications
and environments. Longer performing materials can strongly reduce overall life
time costs. […]
Scope: Research proposals should address all of the following activities:
theoretical understanding (and development of models if appropriate) of the
factors which affect durability of materials, including corrosion and ageing
phenomena; experimental methods to measure and reliably test durability […] “fit
for purpose” validation of new materials through life testing in the planned
application and environment. The proposed solutions should go well beyond the
state of the art […]
The following factors should also be all considered: ease of installation, price,
recycling/reuse of materials, principles of sustainability (ILCD Handbook) […]
The implementation of this topic is intended to start at TRL 4 [validated in
lab] and target TRL 6 [demonstrated in relevant environment].
Ewrop & Chymru: Buddsoddi yn eich Dyfodol
Europe and Wales: Investing in your future Ewrop & Chymru: Buddsoddi yn eich dyfodol
Europe & Wales: Investing in your future
Example of a call continued This topic is particularly suitable for the participation of SMEs.
The Commission considers that proposals requesting a contribution from the EU between
EUR 3 and 6 million would allow this specific challenge to be addressed appropriately.
Nonetheless, this does not preclude submission and selection of proposals requesting other
amounts.
Expected Impact:
• At least 30% improvement in durability on the most relevant properties for the
application;
• At least equivalent level for all other properties;
• At least 30% lower cost;
• Positive LCA balance over the whole life cycle;
• Proposals will have a higher impact if they are relevant to several applications;
• Contribution to strengthening competitiveness of the European industry, including in the
field of “green” and/or offshore technologies.
Proposals should include a business case and exploitation strategy, as outlined in the
Introduction to the LEIT part of this Work Programme.
Type of Action: Research and Innovation action
[27 Oct 2016 First Stage, 4 May 2017 Second Stage €114m for group of 9 calls]
