Reopening Plan
2020-2021
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALBetter Together
Following our announcement on March 13th that HCS would activate our Instructional Contingency Plan beginning Monday, March 16th, our faculty and staff went into action planning and then executing that plan in an effective manner. Throughout the initial weeks of distance learning, I spoke with many of our stakeholders (students, parents, teachers) ensuring the education of our students was continuing at home and specific needs of students and teachers were being met. I am pleased to report that our school community came together, and although a new experience for us all, I am confident that our students are ready for their new grade levels in 2020-2021.
Now is the time to plan for and address the eventual reopening of our school, with an understanding that the health, safety, and wellness of students, families, educators, and staff must be a priority. My commitment to you is that we will use all the information, from various outlets, to make sound decisions going forward to ensure that our students, parents, and staff are safe, both physically and emotionally.
I believe that we have a team at HCS that is ready to lead our reopening initiative. Our team of faculty and staff is a group that has proven time after time to be a unit that is ready to serve our students and parents by providing a rigorous education in the realms of spirituality, academics, athletics, and the arts, and this will continue to be our commitment. Therefore, we have developed a School Reopening Plan for the 2020-2021 school year. This plan will detail the methods and protocol we will use to ensure that our school environment is conducive to the overall education of our students, while maintaining the safety and security of students, faculty and staff. HCS is ready to lead the way!
Distance learning cannot replace students’ experiences with their teachers, administrators, and support staff. All of the students, parents and educators with whom I have spoken have greatly missed the daily interactions that can only be experienced in classrooms and our school. However, if the moment arises where distance learning must be executed again, we as a team are ready and able to pivot to an effective program of education.
Horeb Christian School will continue to issue guidance and support to all stakeholders leading up to the first day of school on Monday, August 24th. We will remain steadfast in our commitment to respond to evolving conditions with understanding, flexibility and creativity. God bless you all and remember that we are better together!
In His Service,
Kevin Macki
Principal
Safety is always a top priority.
CLEANING & DISINFECTION
PRACTICES
HygieneHand-sanitizer dispensers are being installed in common areas
and near campus entrances. Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes
will be provided in all classrooms, indoor spaces and outdoor
areas for wiping down tables and other surfaces before and after
each use. Use of common drinking fountains will be
discontinued. Employee training on safe health practices will take
place throughout the year. Informational signs will be placed
around campus to serve as reminders for proper social distancing
and safe hygienic practices.
Sanitization Custodial staff will clean and sanitize door handles, railings, light
switches, community tables and other high-touch areas
continually during the school day. Bathrooms will be cleaned and
sanitized at least every other hour. Ultraviolet lights and premium
air filters have been installed in all air handling units to help
prevent disease transmission. The HCS custodial staff will utilize
the Protexus Electrostatic Fogger for infection protection.
Additionally, each evening after students have departed, the entire
campus will be deep cleaned and disinfected following guidelines
and protocols from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA), the State of Florida, Miami-Dade
County and the City of Hialeah.
CAMPUS ARRIVAL
Health ScreeningHoreb Christian School will require a daily temperature check at all arrival points, not to exceed 99.9 degrees Fahrenheit. Any
students, parents, or staff who show signs of illness, have elevated temperatures or have been in contact with someone who
has coronavirus are required to stay home. From 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM, students in preschool will be directed to their
designated before-care locations. From 8:00 AM on, preschool students will be directed directly to their classrooms. From
7:00 AM to 7:30 AM, students in elementary will report to designated before- care locations. Students who arrive on campus
after 7:30 AM in elementary will report directly to their homeroom classes (staff will be in designated areas to ensure students
arrive safely to classrooms). Student in secondary school will be in their designated before care locations from 7:00 AM – 8:00
AM. Secondary students that arrive after 8:00 AM must report directly to their homeroom classes, if not purchasing a snack
in the cafeteria (the cafeteria will be open for the purchase of snacks from 8:00 AM to 8:20 AM).
Students with exposure to someone with COVID-19 must remain home while test results are pending or until the 14-day
quarantine period is up. During this time they should self-monitor symptoms and consult a health care provider. A detailed
and revised communicable disease policy will be sent home prior to the commencement of the 2020-2021 school year and
must be signed by parents/guardians during the first week of school.
ON-CAMPUS PROTOCOLS
Protective EquipmentAll students, faculty, and staff will be required to wear face masks
on campus, when not able to maintain 6 feet of social distancing.
In addition, masks will not be mandatory while students are
eating or drinking, during some parts of physical education
classes, or when not feasible during class time). *We are exploring
the option of face shields during class time. We have made an investment in student desk barriers for our preschool and elementary classes.
Visitors and MeetingsHoreb Christian School will limit visitor access and require that
all campus guests wear face masks on the premises. Visitors to
campus must request and schedule their visits in advance. Parents
will not be allowed on campus during the school day and must
remain in their cars during pick up, drop off, and early dismissal.
Meetings with faculty members and administration will be
conducted virtual via Zoom or by special appointment.
LUNCH
Covered Lunches
Students in preschool and elementary will have lunch delivered to them in their homeroom classes. HCS
has developed separate lunch schedules for middle school and high school students. All lunches will be
served in covered trays.
All cafeteria personnel will be properly trained in new guidelines and procedures for the 2020-2021 school
year.
DISMISSAL
PreschoolStudents in preschool will be escorted by
classroom teachers to specific dismissal areas on
campus with proper distancing practiced while
wearing protective masks.
Elementary and SecondaryStudents in the elementary school and secondary
school will be dismissed from their classrooms at
dismissal time utilizing a Pickup Patrol Dismissal
Software to communicate from pick-up areas to
classrooms ensuring a smooth and safe dismissal
procedure.
The learning continues.
ON-CAMPUS CLASSROOM & SCHEDULE
Students will maintain proper distancing in classroom settings while being kept in a cohort setting (no crossover to
other classrooms). The sharing of supplies and materials will be strongly discouraged with the disinfecting of classroom
materials taking place after each use. Visitation to classrooms will be limited to students in the particular class, the
teacher(s) of that class, and the principal or his designee. Playground equipment will be disinfected before and after
designated recess blocks.
Preschool
ON-CAMPUS CLASSROOM & SCHEDULE
Students will maintain proper distancing in classroom settings while being kept in a cohort setting (no crossover to
other classrooms). The teachers in K5 will switch midday rather than the students. All special area teachers (Art, Music,
Spanish), with the exception of Physical Education, will travel to homeroom classes. Students will wear face coverings
when traveling to the PE area. The sharing of supplies and materials will be strongly discouraged. Classroom materials
will be disinfected after each use. Visitation to classrooms will be limited to students in the particular class, the
teacher(s) of that class, and the principal or his designee.
Elementary School
ON-CAMPUS CLASSROOM & SCHEDULE
Students will maintain proper distancing in classroom settings. Secondary students will adhere to a block schedule for
the 2020-2021 school year allowing for a decrease in overall class changes (4 class changes daily). All students must wear
face coverings when traveling from class to class or to common areas and when it is not feasible to maintain 6 feet of
social distancing. Students will not utilize lockers, but instead, they will be required to bring necessary materials for each
school day. For example, a secondary student will only have to bring supplies necessary for 4 classes each day due to our
new block schedule. The next school day, he/she would bring supplies for the other 4 classes they are taking during the
2020-2021 school year.

DISTANCE LEARNING
Students that choose the online learning option will be expected to login for each whole-group instruction portion, being transmitted live from
the classroom daily, of the subject or course being taught, thus maintaining a consistent routine during the course of their distance learning
experience. In addition, each classroom teacher will make themselves available for 20 minutes daily to answer questions and clarify instruction for
distance learning students. Students/parents choosing to pivot back to in-person learning will be able to do so at a designated reentry
date in September. (SEPT. 21, 2020)
Online LearningHoreb Christian School will continue to utilize our hybrid online
approach to virtual learning with students being provided with
necessary supplies and curriculum, while having the ability to view
classroom instruction from home. Google classroom will be utilized by
all classroom teachers with proper training taking place during the
summer. This option will be made available to any interested HCS
families for the 2020-2021 school year. In the event that HCS has to
pivot to online learning for all students, we are ready and capable to
service our students and parents.
Live Streaming ClassesHoreb Christian School is crafting a plan to equip classes with
the technology necessary to enable video and audio engagement.
These tools will allow students to join classes remotely via Zoom
or, potentially another platform. Through professional
development offerings, faculty are rethinking and redesigning
content delivery to provide flexible classrooms that capitalize on
available technology.
MONITORING STUDENT PROGRESS
HCS will utilize formative and summative assessments delivered through Google Classroom. Students will submit these
assessments through the Google Classroom platform. Teachers will meet with students and parents on a bi-weekly basis
or upon special request from parents to discuss students' progress as well as be in communication with administration
in the event that our intervention program must be deployed for a particular student. In essence, teachers will be in tier-
2 (small group) setting when meeting with students daily on Zoom for consultations. Tier-3 (one on one) could be done
with our interventionists or at a later time with the classroom teacher. All meetings with students and parents will take
place via Zoom or by special appointment on campus.
CHAPEL SERVICES
Chapel services will be live streamed directly into the classroom and to students in the distance learning program. Services will be broadcasted live through our Horeb Christian School Youtube channel.
Students will watch from the classrooms until we reach a Phase that allows for large gatherings in the chapel.
ATHLETICS
SportsHoreb Christian School has officially made the decision to cancel Fall sports (Volleyball and Cross Country)
for the 2020-2021 school year. The school is following guidelines from the Florida High School Athletic Association,
Florida Association of Christian Colleges and Schools, Florida Coalition of Christian Private Schools, Miami-Dade
County and the City of Hialeah. Each fall sport will be subject to thoughtful and appropriate adaptations to provide a
meaningful experience and ensure the safety of participants, and the adaptations likely will vary across sports. The
hope is to eventually return to competitive opportunities against outside schools. HCS plans to begin to provide access
to athletic facilities and training beginning in the fall, and more information about the start of the secondary school fall
athletic seasons will be posted on the school website, and delivered through additional communications, as it becomes
available. Information about middle school sports will be shared when students return to campus.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Extra-Curricular Activities
Horeb Christian School greatly values extra-curricular activities for its students. Horeb Christian School intends to
continue to provide meaningful opportunities for students to engage in all Extra-curricular pursuits. The scope and
precise nature of those engagements will vary across activities, and likely will look different than in previous years to
ensure the safety of all participants.
For nothing will be impossible with
God.
