Hope College TRiO Upward Bound
Program
Participate in staff orientation, staff meetings and in-service training.
Assist in the development of curriculum, needs assessments, pre and post-tests.
Develop and implement course objectives, syllabus and evaluations.
Responsibilities
Provide classroom management and instruction to assigned academic courses.
Provide a comprehensive, written mid-term and final evaluation on each program participant enrolled in classes.
Develop and participate in field trips. Perform other duties as assigned by the
Director.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree and possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate.
Experience working with low income and first generation students.
Previous teaching experience.
Accountability
Upward Bound Instructors report to the Director.
O F F I C E H O U R S
The Upward Bound office hours are from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The secretarial staff will alternate lunch hours so that the office remains open throughout the lunch hour.
If you need to get into the office earlier than 7:30 a.m. or be here later than 5:00 p.m. please make prior arrangements with Debbie.
S T A F F M E E T I N G S
Upward Bound summer teachers are expected to attend daily scheduled meetings throughout the Summer Session.
Your input and participation are very important!
If you will be late or unable to attend a scheduled meeting, please let us know by calling (616) 395-7745.
In your absence, please read the minutes to bring yourself up to date on schedule changes, student concerns, etc.
TIME CARDS
All time cards need to be completed and signed before 12:00 p.m. on Fridays.

29).
One half hour per day prep time should be added to your time card each week for teachers teaching 2 classes or more per day
Fifteen minutes per day should be added for teachers teaching 1 class per day
Additional time should be added (amount to be determined) for filling out student midterm/final evaluations
(This will help cover the time spent filling out homework sheets.)
Time off between classes is not paid. Some exceptions will be made (teachers with
independent studies etc.).
Extra curricular activities are not paid.
All exceptions must have prior approval from the Director.
P A Y R A T E S
The base rate for teachers is $20.60 per hour.
Teachers will receive wage increases based on budget increases from the U.S. Department of Education.
Sample Timecard
STAFF I.D.’S
All Upward Bound part-time staff will be issued a Hope College I.D. and lab access cards.
The I.D.'s are normally issued for the number of weeks teachers are employed by the UB program.
Teachers who work during both the summer and academic year will receive a year round I.D.
Campus Safety issues the access cards. These need to be returned or paid for, if lost.
M A I L
Teachers should check their mailboxes each morning and again before leaving in the afternoon.
The Office Assistant will go to the mailroom and copy center twice a day, at 10 a.m. and at 2 p.m.
Incoming mail and requested typing/copying will be placed in your mailboxes.
COPYING / TYPING
A work order form must be completed for each work request.
The secretarial staff needs eight hours lead time for all copying that is sent to Copy Center.
The secretarial staff needs at least one hour lead time to make copies in the office.
COPYING
Copying must be sent to Copy Center if your work request includes the following:
copies need to be three-hole punched copies need to be cut in half copies need to be different colors copies need to be on cover stock copies require special binding more than 15 copies of one original are
needed.
Copies will be made in the UB office if your work request includes the following:
less than 15 copies of one original are needed
originals need to be made from a book or article
CASA and Upward Bound Programs share the office copy machine.
programs will again be running simultaneously this year
it is difficult to make last minute copies
It will be helpful if:
You plan ahead and pick up your copies/supplies from your mailboxes before they are needed.
The main office gets very busy, especially in the morning when classes are in session; therefore, it may not always be possible for someone from the office to deliver last minute copies and supplies to your classroom.
Word Processing
The secretarial staff needs a minimum of one day’s notice to complete all word processing requests.

All non-consumable supplies need to be checked out with either the secretary or the office assistants.
Supplies you need for your classes that are not currently available in the office, may be requested of Debbie.
Monday (afternoon) is Meijer Run Day for any new supplies needed.
Supplies that need to be ordered from out of town will require more lead time.

An equipment/lab request form needs to be completed and given to Debbie 24 hours in advance.
H O M E W O R K
On an average, students should have about 2 hours of homework per night; however, quality is more important than quantity (approximately 1/2 hour per class).
Students are expected to complete homework on time
Feel free to give homework over the weekend.
Please assist us in monitoring students’ use of their Planners. Every student has one!
HOMEWORK TIME(S) Scheduled coaching (Power Hour) sessions. The last 15 minutes of T/TH classes. The administrative staff and one or more of the
tutor advisors will monitor the coaching sessions. Students also have free time in the evening to
study and may sign up for late night study if they need extra time.
Homework Book
All teachers are expected to place their homework assignments on Moodle before 3:00 p.m. each day.
Homework assignments and any special
instructions should be included as well as the names of any students missing assignments.
Upward Bound strives to:

Instructors will follow up with student in or after class
The administrative staff will follow up with students as recommended by instructors
Midterm / Final Evaluations
Instructors are expected to assess individual student progress and assist the student to develop a plan of action to accomplish student identified goals.
Syllabus and objectives due on June 14. Midterm Evaluations due on July 5. Final Evaluations due on August 5.
Upon completion of evaluations
The Upward Bound staff will: review each evaluation follow up appropriately with students place one copy of evaluation in the student's
file mail a copy of evaluation out to the parents monitor student progress
Instructors help students meet Program expectations
Students are expected to treat Upward Bound staff, other students and college property with respect.
Food and beverages are allowed in the classrooms with teacher permission. Students are responsible for disposing of trash in designated areas.
Problems outside the classroom should be reported to the Program Director.
The Director will take appropriate action.
Students are encouraged to stay away from property that is not theirs (other offices, elevators etc.).
Staff & students should monitor noise level as there are many other students, faculty and guests on Hope’s campus during the summer.

Please respect the students' right to privacy and confidentiality.
It is important that all staff refrain from talking about any student in another student's presence and that criticism remain constructive with the students' best interests in mind.
Program follow up may include:
UB staff meeting with the student(s) individually Monitoring student progress closely Meeting with students on a regular basis Suggesting/providing additional tutoring Providing remedial instruction Assisting students to develop study skills,
learning techniques and/or organizational skills Informing parents of the student's progress Student dismissal
A C T I V I T I E S
There are several afternoon/evening activities planned throughout the Summer Session.
Not all are mandatory for instructors;
however, you are encouraged to attend them if at all possible.

The tutor advisors, teachers and administrative staff have an opportunity to get to know and learn one another in preparation for a great start to the summer session!
Pretty Lake: June 16
The focus of the Pretty Lake experience is teambuilding and goal setting in preparation for the rigorous 6 week Summer Session. Teachers are paid for participation in this activity.
Holland 100: July 16
This is an annual fundraiser benefitting the Upward Bound Scholarship Fund. Juniors, Seniors and UB staff provide refreshments at four different rest stops for the Holland 100 Bike Tour.
Recognition Celebration: July 27
Celebrate the academic accomplishments of your students during a special celebration picnic in the Pine Grove! Department Awards are given to ONE or TWO students.
Post-Testing: July 28
Students will follow an abbreviated schedule for post-testing.
UB Live: A Showcase of Culture & Talent July 28, 6:00 p.m.
Traditions are a part of just about every family, especially when it comes to food. Parents, staff and community members are asked to share one of their special traditional foods topped off by an evening of entertainment.
Staff Celebration: July 29Enjoy coffee, tea or your favorite soft drink in the company of the UB summer staff. It is a time to reflect on the accomplishments of the 6 weeks and provide suggestions for improvement. This event will take place in the UB office.
