TWO Hoole GP surgeries are moving

out of the area to become part of a new

supersurgery at the old Crosville bus

    depot on Delamere Street.

    The purpose-built Integrated Care Centre

will encompass four local practices The

    Elms Medical Centre, Hoole

Road Surgery, Northgate VillageSurgery and Northgate Medical

Centre . Each will relocate to the

new building as well as a number

    of community services currently

provided from St Martins clinic and

    Upton clinic.

Patients will still belong to the same

GP practice and see the same

GPs and practice staff. And each

practice will maintain its uniqueapproach, and continue to offer a

    high standard of care.

According to health chiefs, the benets of

the new development will be better access

for patients to a wider range of services

in one place such as: physiotherapy,

podiatry, and dentistry as well as a number

of services currently provided in hospital

that can be more effectively provided in

a community setting such as follow upcare with specialists. There will also be

    diagnostic services such as ultrasound

and endoscopy, plus a modern operating

facility for minor procedures. Other facilities

planned to be included are a pharmacy, an

opticians and a cafe. The building will be

able to accommodate the District Nursing

    staff and Community Matrons covering

Chester city area along with the social

care team, enabling better teamwork and

    communication.

The new building will also provide a

teaching centre of excellence for primary

    care medical education, for doctors,

    nurses, medical and nursing students

The developer Watkin-Jones expects tocomplete the work in April 2013.

A FATHER of two from Hoole has been

awarded the crown of the UKs MEGA

    Bloke of the Year.

Paul White, who lives in Woodlands Drive,

was nominated by his wife Karen for his

efforts in being a great daddespite commuting 150

    miles to work.

    Last year was a very

    difcult time for the

    family as Paul was

    made redundant. Like

    many families in the UK

    during the recession,

    Paul and Karen were hit

with a bombshell thatwould change their lives

    dramatically.

    With daughters Elizabeth,

    2, and Amelia, 17

    months, to look after, it

    was a very stressful time

    for them both. Paul really

struggled to nd another job and in the end

it took ve months. However the difculties

did not stop there. Unfortunately, the jobPaul was offered was based in Cambridge,

150 miles away from the where the

family live in Chester. Relocating was

not an option for Paul and Karen as the

costs were too high, so Paul accepted

the job and now commutes every week.

Paul leaves the house at4am on Monday morning and

is back by 5pm on Friday

to make sure he spends as

much time as he can with

his two girls. He then takes

    full responsibility over the

    weekend, allowing Karen to

have a rest and some much

    needed time to get things

    done.It has been a very

challenging time for us but we

    are managing says Karen.

The girls talk to their daddy

in the morning on Skype and

    again before bed. When

    asked about plans for the

future, Karen said, Who knows how long

this will last but we want Paul to know how

proud we are of him and to thank him forhow hard he is working to look after us.

We all know why breathing is soimportant and yet most o do not

breathe as well as we could, afect-ing our health adversely. How so?

    1. How we breathe aects the amount ocarbon dioxide and oxygen we have inour blood. oo much carbon dioxide willgive us acid blood (Like too much in theair gives us acid rain). Te acid balance oour blood directly aects the unctioningo our hormones and almost everythingelse. I we breathe correctly our body ismore likely to unction correctly.

    2. I we breathe incorrectly we may startto overuse muscles, particularly in theshoulders and neck, which can lead tochronic neck and shoulder problems.

    3. Shallow breathing does not allow us tode-stress whereas deep abdominal breath-ing triggers the relaxation response whichis the opposite o the ght/fight or stressresponse.

In my experience, i you suer romstress, tight muscles and general bodilydiscomort, the single most eective thingyou can do is to learn to breathe properly.Going and getting exercise is essentialand may help aerate your body, but this isonly a temporary x i your breathing isdysunctional.

Just imagine somebody who is stressed oranxious; they are breathing ast and shal-lowly, or they are not breathing at all. Youcan try breathing ast and shallowly (iyou do not have a lung problem or suerrom panic attacks) or a moment. How

does it eel? Now try breathing slowly anddeeply. How does that compare? Whenyou eel angry or nervous beore makinga presentation the best thing to do is tostop and take a ew deep breaths.

When you breathe in, your abdomenshould expand outwards, your lower ribcage should expand sideways and yourupper ribcage should expand orward justa little. Your shoulders should not lit and

when you look in the mirror you shouldsee no movement in the muscles o yourneck. You can use your hands to eel theexpansion in these dierent areas.

Retraining breathing takes time andsensitivity. You need to practice ullbreathing every day or ve minutes orso and you should stop and take a ulldeep breath a couple o times an hour.I you do this or three months you willre-programme your brains automaticcontrol o your breath. I you nd it hardand there is a lot o tension in your abdo-men then you may benet rom a gentle

    massage.

I you suer rom any heart or lungdisorder please consult your doctor beoretrying to alter your breathing as yourbody may react to changes in the chemis-try it has got used to.

Remember dont try too hard, be gentleand allow time to change and you willreally transorm how you eel throughyour breath.

THE Hoole Junior & Senior OpenTournament, held in the rst week of

August, was a great success! 100 people,

including 32 Hoole LTC members, took

part in the tournament and thankfully the

weather was kind rain only stopping

    play on one day!

A high standard of tennis was played

throughout the week and the friendly

welcome given by all club members made

the event hugely enjoyable for spectatorsand competitors alike. Hopefully they all had

such a good time that they will be back again

    next year!

Hoole LTC organised and ran the

tournament this year with a focus on making

sure everyone played as many matches as

possible. The Mini Red and Mini Orange

events had the largest number of entrants

and all the competitors in these events

played at least ve matches. For all otherage groups we used compass draws to

maximise the number of matches for each

    player and we offered extra

    bonus matches wherever

    possible.

    There were 12 events in

total and there was individual success in

the tournament for some of the Hoole LTC

members who took part Emily Bolton and

Evie Gordon were the Best Girl performersin the Red (8 & Under) and Orange (9 &

    Under) events respectively, while Maya

Williams won the 12 & Under Girls event,

Saleem Rizvi won the 14 & Under Boys

event and Jamal Rizvi won the 16 & Under

Boys event. Congratulations to all of them

and well done to everyone from Hoole

LTC who took part, especially to all those

for whom this was their rst experience of

playing in a tournament. The tournament would not have been

possible without the massive amount of time

and effort given voluntarily by so many club

members. Ken Thomas did a fantastic job in

his debut as Tournament Referee and waswonderfully supported by his wife Penny

    on refreshments, Sarah Rizvi coordinating

all the entries and Bob Kemp,

    Ted Harris and Simon Wright

    supervising all the matches over

at the Alexandra Park courts. We

also owe a huge thank you to all the club

members who helped out during the week

of the tournament by providing wonderful

home-made cakes and giving their time tohelp with the running of the event. Thank

you to all of you and especially all the Junior

members who made the Mini Tennis events

run so smoothly we couldnt have done it

    without your help!!

We hope to see even more club members

taking part in the Hoole Junior & Senior

Open Tournament next year and we will

publicise the date of next years tournament

on the club website as soon as it isconrmed by the LTA watch this space!!

    HOOLE RANGERS FC

HOOLE Rangers had a busy close season,

    we continued training throughout the

    summer and arranged several pre-season

friendly games. We have attracted quite

a few new players which will make the

overall squad much stronger this year.

The new season started on 20th August and

as usual, the rst few weeks were difcult with

players being away on holiday and having

    family commitments. However, despite the

absentees, the 1st team have played 3 league

games, winning one, drawing one and losing

the other. We have also won one cup game,

but lost another on a really bad weekend

where we had 10 regular players missing.

So overall, a relatively good start which givesus condence that this year, we will be much

    more successful than previous seasons

Despite nishing in the bottom half of Division

2 last season, Hoole Rangers reserves were

promoted to Division 1, due to teams dropping

out, and many new clubs joining the league.

By strengthening the overall squad, signing

several new quality players, both teams are

much better positioned this year and we are

looking forward to the season. To date, the

reserves have one league win from threegames, but expect that to improve as we get

all of the players available again.

We will continue to train on Tuesdays and

Thursdays from 6.15 - 8pm at New Scene and

would welcome any new players who want

to come down. We are currently looking for a

regular goalkeeper for the reserves so if you

are interested in playing for a great club, with

strong ambitions, please come training or

Fmn schI AM a Freeman of Chester and am trying to put together the Roll of Honour for the

    Guildhall.

One of the Second World War casualties is George Sumner Hewitt, son of George and Eva

Hewitt from Hoole, who was killed at Anzio in 1944. He was made free in November 1939.

I have very little information about him, and should be grateful if you would ask your

readers if they have any, or even a photo which I could put with my research.

The highest ranking Freeman is Commodore Willam Henry Kelly from Bootle, who served

in both World Wars. He was awarded the DSO, and on his last voyage in 1941, aged 68,

his ship was torpedoed and he was last seen standing to attention on the bridge as the ship

    went down.

Another conrmed casualty is Lance Serjeant George Sumner Hewitt of the 7th Battalion

Cheshire Regiment, who was killed on 12th April 1944, and is buried in the Beachhead

Cemetery at Anzio in Italy. The Commonwealth War Graves Website conrms that he was

the son of George and Eva Hewitt of Hoole, and actually states that he was a Freeman of

    Chester.

Other than that, and despite several articles in our own magazine, I have no other

information, and wondered whether any of your readers might be able to provide some

more details, or better still a photograph.

If and when the Roll of Honour is produced, I would like to dedicate it to Corporal Marc

Taylor of REME, who was killed in Iraq in 2004, and was the grandson of my rst cousin.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Wallowers and primulas can beplanted out this month for colour next year.October is also the time to plant out perennials, evergreen hedging plants and climbers beforewinter sets in. The soil should still be warmfrom summer to allow good root growth andalso damp from rain enabling them to survivethe winter.

In the vegetable garden you can probably stillplant winter lettuce seeds then cover with acloche to supply some greens in winter. The media is very good at perpetuating these. Negative mediastereotypes can also inuence young people themselvesa kind ofself fullling prophecy. On a broader level, young people can bediscriminated against or treated suspiciously because of stereotypes. This is very important; young people should feel embraced by theircommunity, not alienated by it.

There are many young people who are making a postivecontruibution to lifeand we can see that many in the next generation are

in need of postive role models, the communication of good values and amoral and spiritual underatnding of life.

Churches across Chester are running Open Youth Clubs on a weeklybasis, with over 400 teenagers involved in them. A large proportionof these are part of the DBiz Youth Work run in partnership with alocal charity called The Light Project. Here in Hoole 2 DDiz Clubs arerunning every Thursday and Friday evening. These clubs are a run bychurch volunteers using the experince and expertise of 2 part time YouthWorkers to provide well resourced and exciting evenings of activities for young people. In fact acrossChester more professional Youth Workers are employed by churches to serve the needs of the youththan by the local authority! This is only one example of such good work with teenagers we also havethe work of the Scouting Movement which des an excellent work and there are many more I couldmention but dont have space for.

I was reading some interesting statics about Britain today recenly. While 92% of Americans believe inGod, only 35% in Britain do and 43% say they have no religion, according to Britains National Centrefor Social Research. The number of people who afliate themselves with the Church of England was23% of the population in 2009 from 40% in 1983. In truth though, if Britains Christian tradition isdying out, the leaders of the faith have only themselves to blame, for perpetuating the countrys highlycentralized religious structure.

You may not be surprised to know that I am convinced there is a place for Christainity to be involvedin the process of forming the next generation and part of my mission in life is to make sure we hand

over the torch of Christianity to the future generation. If we are to deal with the issues that are thecharacteristics of a society which is seriously ill, then we need to look full in the face of the problemsand grasp their signicance before we consider the action required. David Cameron, has said himself,There are pockets of our society that are not only broken, but frankly sick We have a moral problemnot just a politcal one. For me, I belive this is the time for an authentic Christian spirituality to offera way forward. We need to use the language of sin, of repentance, of transformation and of hope andapply it to both institutions and indivduals if we are to chart a way back from the mess we are in.

Allow me to end with a quote from the political activist in the United States, Jim Wallis: The crisisof our times calls for our conversion. Our structures, values, habits and assumptions are in need ofbasic transformation. Neither politics nor piety as we know them will effect such a change. Rather a

new spirituality is required, a spirituality rooted in old traditions but radically applied to our presentcircumstances
