Voices of the Great Place

Dear Reader: In honor of Thanksgiving this month, please tell us what your favorite Thanksgiving dish has been. “My favorite Thanksgiving dish is Love. That is the most wonderful dish at our table. This is the dish that everyone loves, everyone can bring their own to share. It doesn’t have any calories, and it is so easily passed around the table, and no one will say they don’t like it. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, I love planning the dinner, cooking, the glorious smells wafting from the kitchen. The football rivalries, the cheering, the closeness of the people I treasure. The only gift that is required for this day is your presence. Our table is always open to anyone and everyone. Though now that my children have families of their own, we cannot always be around the same table, but I know that when they sit down to dinner, they will share our favorite dish. LOVE”

- Linda Jordan-VanVranken “My mom makes the best Apple Pie! She came up with the recipe when I was a little girl. Her recipe is so special because it has cinnamon red hots in it. It makes the pie a beautiful pink color. My favorite memories of Thanksgiving come from my childhood when would get to help my mom make her special apple pie. I would pull up a chair and help my mom peel the apples. She would always let me use her special apple peeler. As a little kid I thought I was so cool cranking the apples, and getting to eat the peels. I would get the job of the apples while she would make the pie crust. After we would finish making the pie, she always took the leftover pie crust and made cinnamon rolls. Then we could have something yummy to eat, since the pie was always for later. Whenever I smell her apple pie cooking it always takes me back to my childhood. I hope to one day teach my children how to make their Grandmas special Apple Pie, and create many memories with them.”

- Revee Kraszewski

“They say smells spark a memory from childhood. That is the case with Turkey! The smell of turkey baking in the oven brings back so many memories of going to my grandma’s (or Grma as we say it!) house and spending time with the family. A memory so priceless. It’s with you forever! Turkey reminds me of everyone sitting at the table, talking, laughing, sharing stories, but it also reminds me of the funny times like my uncle Dan falling asleep on the couch immediately after eating the turkey! Every year without fail, he fell asleep, and the good ol’ 12” television was right next to him blaring football! You can’t take away my memories :)”

H as the holiday spirit caught you? Look-ing for that perfect holiday moment with someone special? Be sure to take

a moment to visit Santa’s Village inside Live Oak Pavilion when you are driving through Nature in Lights. Santa’s Village is the perfect place in all of central Texas to capture the memories of the little ones with Santa. The stage is created to look like the North Pole where children can visit with Santa and let him know what they want for Christmas. Our Santa is special - he will take the time to speak to all the children. If you wish to create a memory while visiting Santa there will be several options this year. Have a photo taken with Santa that slides into a Holiday Sleeve only $8 each. New this year is the Talking Picture Frame - Your Child’s Photo will be inside a talking frame - the frame has the capabil-ity of recording a message that can be sent to Daddy overseas - where he can actually hear his child’s voice say “Merry Christmas - I love you Daddy.” The talking frames cost $10 each. Photos of your child can also be captured on a coffee or funnel mug...these are great gifts for Grandma / Grandpa. $15 each for coffee mug and $18 each for funnel mug. Santa’s Village is also filled with vendors with a wide variety of holiday gifts - from NFL items, light ups, candles, jewelry, bags, purses, wax hands, face painting, and one of a kind items. And to make the evening perfect enjoy a hot cup of chocolate with your favorite home baked cookie at Granny’s Cookie Shack. Santa’s Village will be open from 5:30 - 11 pm beginning Nov. 19-21. And then every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 25 Nov - 19 Dec. additional nights will be 20 -24 Dec. The last night that Santa night will be available is Dec. 24.HO! Ho! Ho! And Merry Christmas to All....s

ovember has always been a time of celebrating with Family and friends, to re-

flect on what we are thankful for, and to of course, indulge in massive amounts of food and beverages. Before sitting down and enjoying a nice meal with the family at home, or one of the delicious meals that will be hosted on post, take a minute to explore the rich history that contributes to this holiday. Thanksgiving origins date back to the time of the Pilgrims in 1621. The Plymouth Celebra-tion occurred at the Plymouth Plantation which was to be-come a part of the original thir-teen colonies. The feast closely resembled traditional European dinners at the time. It is said that the celebration was held in honor of the settlers surviv-ing through their first winter at the settlement, which became significant after it was discov-ered the supplies brought over from England were insufficient. The Wampanoag tribe of Na-tive Americans began to teach the settlers to harvest corn and catch eel, this, along with the leader of the Wampanoag tribe donating a large part of their own supplies helped the colo-nists survive through the initial winter. Immediately following the first harvest came what most hold to be the first tradi-tional Thanksgiving meal. This first celebration lasted for three days and was host to 53 settlers and 90 Native Ameri-

cans. The dishes ranged from fish, fowl and squash to fruits and pumpkins. A first hand ac-count from one of the settlers states, “There was a great deal of wild turkey of which they took many”- William Bradford. This account may well have given rise to the most popular tradition of Turkey for the holi-day. Other colonies including Massachusetts Bay and Charles-town also held similar celebra-tions during the 17th century. In the 18th century, with the beginning of the Revolutionary War, it became common prac-tice to denote a celebration of thanks in honor of a military victory. The first national decree for a Thanksgiving celebration was given by the Continental Congress in 1777, for the vic-tory in the battle of Saratoga. Thanksgiving Day was officially announced as a national holi-day in 1863, to be held every year on the final Thursday of November. Thanksgiving Day is a holi-day rich in tradition both for our nation and for the indi-vidual Families who celebrate it. While many of you on post find yourselves away from Fam-ily during this holiday, Family and MWR has put together a

celebration of their own and you are more than welcome to attend. Join Club Hood in celebrat-ing a Happy Thanksgiving Buf-fet on November 25. The buffet will consist of a smorgasbord of delicious foods, the carving station will consist of mouth-watering Roasted Turkey and Virginia Baked Ham, as well as a Steamship Round of Beef. Oth-er meats will include, sliced tur-key, pork tenderloin and stuffed Flounder. To compliment the fish and meats the lunch line will contain candied yams, mac-aroni and cheese, green bean casserole, roasted garlic mashed potatoes and more. A salad sta-tion will be available for a light-er choice, and the buffet will be rounded out with a delectable choice of desserts. Two separate seating times are available for your conve-nience; the first will be from 11 am to 12:30 pm, the second will begin at 1:30 pm and end at 3 pm. Prices are $18.95 for adults and $5.95 for children ages 5-12, children under 4 years of age are free. Reservations for both times are available, call 254-532-5073 or 254-532-5329. Please join us in this wonder- ful celebration. s

Thanksgiving Day is a holiday rich in tradition both for our nation and for the individual Families who celebrate it.

A Tribute: Trials, Tears, and Triumph

t is hard to pinpoint the makeup of a military Family Member because each military Family is unique. They can be single, married, children,

teenagers, parents, grandparents, fiancés, and even friends. Whatever the makeup is, it is enlivening to know everyone is encompassed in what could be described as the largest Family support network on the planet – the military Family community. During the month of November, military Families serving around the world are being honored through a variety of observances and are being recognized for the commitment and contributions they make every day. Military life is not easy, but it is rewarding. Being a military Family Member means your life will be filled with various trials, a few tears, and a lot of triumph. Trials come in various forms. Being able to pick up and move across country at a moments notice, chang-ing your career, uprooting children, and knowing at

least one of your possessions will probably break in the move takes strength and flexibility. Finding out that a deployment has been extended or moved up may take sheer will not to break down. If I had to bet on the resiliency of a rubber band versus the military Family, I would put odds on the military Family every time. The tears are shed both in sadness and joy. They fall for the military Family Member deploying, for those who endure injury, and for those who do not make it back. Then there is the very moment a loved one steps off the plane to return home and the commander dis-misses the troops to the arms of their loved ones. Triumph occurs on a daily basis and all triumphs are distinctive. They occur in every smile, every laugh, and each time a military Family overcomes a new chal-lenge. The military Family is triumphant because they make it through those trials and the tears, and most importantly, they make it through together and as part the larger military Family community.

Turkey Bowl – November 1-21 Throughout the month of November Phan-tom Warrior Lanes is hosting its Turkey Bowl! All you have to do is go bowl 10 games during the time period and fill up your punch card. Then you’re automatically entered to win the Thanks-giving turkey prize, which will be given to five lucky winners! You can enter as many times as you’d like, so feel free to keep bowling to fill up multiple punch cards. The drawing will be held on November 22 and you don’t have to be pres-ent to win. For more information call Phantom Warrior Lanes at 254-287-3424.

Turkey Scramble – November 20 The Courses of Clear Creek hosts this an-nual event in which teams of four compete in a scramble to see who can win the ultimate prize of a free Thanksgiving turkey and accompanying grocery gift cards so the winners can purchase the ingredients to complete their meal. The cost to compete is $15 per person, plus the appropriate green and cart fees, which in-cludes a lunch. Registration for the scramble is 8 - 8:45am and the shotgun start is at 9 am. To find out more info or to register call The Cours-es of Clear Creek at 254-287-4130.

ovember is the beginning of what I often call the “money-draining months”. Meaning, there are so many things we have to spend money on that I often feel like I might as well kiss every paycheck

for the next three months goodbye. First, there is Thanksgiving with its astronomical grocery bills, and then there’s Christmas where you’re spending money on decorations, food and presents for what often feels like a million people. Throw in a holiday traveling excursion or two and soon all of our pockets are emptier than empty. I don’t pretend to be a money expert by any means, but I do know of a few Family & MWR promotions coming up where you could win a free Thanksgiving turkey or meal just by having fun and participating!

Check out the Turkey-centric events going on here at Fort Hood this monthand you could just be the lucky turkey winner! s

The On-Post Hotel, Redefined:Fort Hood’s New Holiday Inn Express

Lodging

K eith Ware Hall has a new name, but the name is actually the least of the changes you’ll see at the fully renovated hotel, now

newly branded as a Holiday Inn Express®. The renovation is a project of the Privatization of Army Lodging (PAL) program, a collaborative effort between the Department of the Army, Actus Lend Lease and IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group). The newly branded hotel will offer a higher standard of amenities for both official and unofficial Army visitors, including Soldiers, Families and civilians. As a result of Actus Lend Lease’s renovation efforts, all rooms and public spaces have new carpet, paint, floor tiles and furnishings. Every guest room has a 32-inch flat-screen TV, new bedding, and upgraded shower amenities. Major additions include the free Smart Start® breakfast bar featuring hot and cold breakfast items seven days a week, a new outdoor pool, a business center, a lounge, and a small convenience mart. The hotel will continue to offer the amenities and services introduced as part of the IHG Army Hotels initiative last year, including the popular Wednesday-night barbecue socials, concierge service and a free on-post shuttle service. And guests will continue to benefit from IHG’s Priority Club® Rewards program, earning points for their stays at Fort Hood that can be used for stays at IHG hotels worldwide or redeemed for a variety of other rewards. Even while renovations were under way, the

improvements generated positive customer feedback. “We

have seen a continual increase in guest satisfaction,” says general manager

Sandra Van Bibber. “We get customer

feedback through a third-party evaluation,

and it’s been very positive. Now that we

have all the transitions in place, service will improve even more.” Fort Hood is one of ten Army posts chosen to participate in the first phase of the PAL project. The Holiday Inn Express will be just the second branded hotel ever opened on a US military installation. The remaining on-post lodging facilities will remain open until a new Candlewood Suites® hotel is constructed in a later phase of the project. hhh, ‘tis the holiday season is upon us! Soon, the smell of holiday meals complete with mouth-watering meats, delectable side-dishes,

and yummy desserts will fill the air! Twinkling lights and sparkling decorations will be displayed on every doorstep and house. Malls, department stores, and every commercial establishment imaginable will have holiday shoppers galore! All the anticipation of waiting for this once-a-year celebration makes us forget…how much is this going to cost me?! In planning for the holidays, we seem to forget the financial aspect of this celebration. We become over-whelmed with meals, parties, gifts, and decorations but frequently put aside the idea of cost involved-a cost that could possibly take months or even until the next holiday season to pay off. We tend to abide by our checklists to get everything just right for our holiday celebrations. So why not use a financial checklist to help us budget for the per-fect holiday celebration? Take for instance these costs involved-food, wrap-ping paper, bows, Christmas cards, postage, phone calls, gifts, decorations, gas, lodging, invitations, clothes and not to mention normal everyday household expenses. This all tends to add up! Starting a holiday budget early and sticking to it throughout the holidays can definitely help with any financial burden you may incur. First, and maybe the most important holiday budgeting tip, is to start planning early! Check how much money you have after paying bills each month and setup a savings plan.

Find ways to stop spending on menial things and you will see the money start to add up. Use this towards your gifts. Avoid using credit cards! Write an expense checklist so you have a visual repre-sentation of the money you will spend. Draft a list of gifts you would like to buy and can afford for family, co-workers, neighbors, etc. Be realistic of whom you can buy for and how much for each. Trim down to immediate Family members if need be. Don’t forget to factor in the costs of gift wrap, bows, tape, and postage if they need to be mailed. Make sure you write down expenses accurately. Write a complete grocery list to make sure you have all items needed and how much all of it will cost for that perfect holiday meal. Add the costs of eating out, baking items, and drinks too! Take into consideration your miscellaneous costs as well. Don’t forget entertainment costs such as invitations, clothing, and activities. Also, the decorations for the season like your lights, garland, candles, wreaths, and trees to name a few. Reuse decorations as much as possible. Lastly, travel costs should also be taken into consideration. Lodging, gas, phone calls, and meals to and from the holiday events will also be an expense. Keep in mind it’s never too late to start now and it’s nev-er too early for next year! Army Community Service offers the following classes to help: Budget/Debt Management and Savings/Investing. Also, a holiday spending plan worksheet is available on our website at www.hoodmwr.com/acs/frb.html or for more information contact us at 254-288-2862.s

he holiday season is upon us and that means hectic schedules, lots of errands and a to-

do list a mile long. Though there’s a lot going on, we still need to set time aside to spend precious moments with our Family and loved ones. On Tuesday, December 7, Child, Youth & School Services will be hosting its 5th Annual Victorian Tea for the Families of Fort Hood. In the past, it has been a very successful event with an average attendance of 300 people. This year the tea will take place in the ballroom of the Phantom Warrior Center, Bldg. 194, on 37th Street. It will be a social and elegant gathering that is designed to help youth and their Families wind down during the hectic holiday season. Best of all,

the Victorian Tea is free and open to all service members and their Families. All ages are welcome so bring the whole Family! Looking for an excuse to play dress up? The Victorian Tea is the perfect opportunity to have some fun and pretend like you’re back in the Victorian era. This year’s theme is Red Hat Society, “ The Elite Ladies of Red.” Participants are encouraged to dress in Sunday best clothes and get creative with the Victorian theme by adding some gloves, a fancy hat or whatever floats your “tea” boat! Last year there were quite a few little Victorian ladies and gentlemen who made their appearance! The tea will begin at 5 pm and tea, of various flavors, will be served. There will also be light finger foods for snacking. The agenda for the evening includes a Victorian fashion show, traditional tea readings, guest speakers and much more. The evening is sure to be a lot of educational fun and a great opportunity for some parent-child bonding. Put down the to-do list, take a breath and bring your Family to the Victorian Tea on December 7. s

Veteran’s Day

by Sara Browning

Coming from a long line of military Families, Veteran’s Day means everything to me. I asked my father, “What does Veteran’s Day mean to

you?” He replied, “A day where you pause and re-flect on all the veterans, especially the ones who gave their lives in defense of their country, regard-less of political position.” A day to reflect on veterans - how do you re-flect? On November 11,1918, it is said to be be-ginning date of the annual anniversary of Veteran’s Day and is said to be observed with thanksgiv-ing and prayer and parades designed to achieve peace through good will and mutual understand-ing between nations. Every year, the President of the Unites States issues a proclamation for this day calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings. This le-gal holiday was first incorporated by President Wilson as Armistice Day in honor of the Armistice treaty which ended WWI, but was eventually re-named to recognize all veterans, to include those of WWII. This is the day to honor American vet-erans of all wars. Maybe you know someone who fought in World War I (US 1917-1918) & II (US 1941-1945), in Korea (1950-1953), on Vietnam (1956-1975), in Nicaragua (1981-1989), in the U.S. Intervention in Lebanon (1982-1984), in Operation Earnest Will (1987-1988), in Operation Desert Storm (1990-1991), in the No-Fly Zone War/Iraq (1991-2003), in the U.S. Intervention in Somalia (1992-1994), in Operation Deliberate Force (1994-1995) or in Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2010). If you don’t recognize some of these, then ask the veteran and they will proudly tell you about it. Veteran’s Day is the day to be filled with sol-emn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory,

because of that from which it has freed us. Fly the American flag proudly this Veteran’s Day and con-tribute in the thanksgiving of your freedom. Finally after reflecting, I asked my father what is the one thing he would like to say to the veter-ans: “I would like to thank everyone, Soldiers and the Families, as well as the civilians for their sacri-fice.” HAPPY VETERAN’S DAY! s

Have a Healthy Holiday

he Holiday Season: indulging heavily and pre-paring to buy jeans a size larger than normal after it’s all over. Cookies, pies, turkey, mashed

potatoes, OH MY! Sound familiar? It all takes its toll on both our weight and our self confidence. This year, make a change and turn Heavy Holidays into Healthy Holidays. The first way to keep your holidays healthy is to plan in advance. Don’t go into Thanksgiving dinner thinking “I’ll just try to be healthy.” Instead, set clear goals so you have something specific to work for. Identify what your biggest temptation is and then tell yourself that you’re only going to have one, rea-sonably sized serving of your favorite mashed pota-toes or cherry pie. This isn’t about deprivation, it’s about compromise! Another great way to keep yourself from indulg-ing too much, is to follow the half and half rule for your plate: fill your plate halfway with healthy veg-gies or fruit and only fill the rest with meat and starch, and no, green bean casserole doesn’t count as a healthy vegetable option! No healthy options at your holiday celebrations?

That’s no excuse, because you can take control and bring them! Bring a fruit platter or a veggie side dish that DOES fit into your healthy lifestyle. One of my favorites is roasted broccoli, roasted in the oven with garlic & olive oil. It’s actually more popular than the broccoli casserole, in my experience! For a healthier dessert option, offer to bring a fruit crisp. They are loaded with fruit and usually less sugar than other desserts, it is the best option for a healthy eater. Finally, get up and get moving during the holi-days! Despite my best tips, it’s bound to happen that at some point you’re going to get off track a bit and indulge. Instead of getting down on yourself, counteract it by incorporating exercise into your holiday routine! Go for a Family walk in the crisp fall air or play a Family game of kickball. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you do something to get your bodies moving and burn calories. With these tips you should be ready to turn those Heavy Holidays into Healthy Holidays! Maybe you will even motivate someone in your life to make the same change! s
