liocauBe of 'getting cold feet, as the slang phrase runs,n man bOrnetintos falla to grasp opl)ortunity as It flies, butit remained for a farnior in t lie Stato of Washington torun amuck on account of the high temperature of his peda'e'trornftjos. j% rocont ross dispatch from Vancouver,\\14j5j4,, runs thus

The climate of Washington must be mild Indeed. Whilethe fto,oti East" is shiverIng In the icy blast, a man inVancouver swings his foot In the open air to cool them!To be sure, 11e liad on German socks, whatever they are;and lie had a wife and ton children, which suggests thePossession of high courage and a warm heart.

A Ransag Iloolloo Setids this office the following clip-ping from a New York paper dated January 26:

flcnuso fns)1l008ijty drcsc1 v1It wumen rubbed elbowswIth negroes, Japones.-. and C}ilne and applauded speechesadvocating the ntermarrinK of all races at a dinner lastnight, the Cosmopolitan Society of Anicrica fa being severelyerltict?ed. The objects of the organjzaon aro 'to nurturea fraternity of all peop1s. incluent5 of birth or stationin life wIll be iFoored, 140cl a comnion brotl4orhood workedout,' ?he 0rg0141z01100 started out with a membership ofnearly 1,000.

This 'Comopol1tan Soctety" is an aggregation of vis-lonaries, banded together for the avowed purpose ofbreaking down 'caste prejudice," By the term "casteprejudice," they really meats race prejudice, and theirmain Idea Is to bring about the Intermarriage of whitefolks noci negroes. But 8111cc they call it "caste," let usfor a nioment consider some of the phases of ii casteOyOtOui.

Long ago somebody advanced tbo Idea that democracyand caste go together: it has been claimed, Indeed, that

democracy can exist only under a system of ancient and, recognized caste where the boundaries are so clearlymarked that they can be jumped ovér continually with-out being obliterated. No system of life ever yet devisedor ever to be devised can prevent caste, The only dif-fronce is between itB recognition and its denial, but it willstill exIst whether we deny lt or not. Only when thecaste lines have been firmly established by Immemorialusage can they be disregarded upon almost infinite ecca-sion, but where they are not anciently established theirexistence must be emphasized upon ali occasions and inall sorts of wounding ways. The German prince willmeet his feilow-citlzens In tile foyer of tite theater uponterms of perfect goodfeilowship and equality, and therewill be no hint or suggestion of a difference in rank. That is because no hint or suggestion is needed. Thefact is a fact, and it will not ho forgotten by any one.For the same reason the French grande dame of ancientfamil)' vill alight from her carriage on the publie boule-yard upon tite occasion of a fete and dance with any manwho invites her. Her casto enables lier to do this withsafety and propriety, and the man with whom she dances-a street.sweoper, maybe-will not forget the differencein caste which alone makes such dQmocracy possible,

The man who has not fenced in his land will watch hisneighbor with jealous suspicion lest he encroach, but whenonce his fence has been built ho will throw open his gateand invite his neighbor to enter whenever it pleases him.

Now, iii tito South the coior lino is so sharply drawnand so clearly understood that there is not the slightestreason over to hint at it. Consequently, in the South agreat many little Incidents occur every day that wouldprobably be misunderstood by a member of the Cosmo-poiitan Society. For instance, not long ago a lady waswalking down a country lana toward the station of asuburban street car line, her intention being to catch thecar to the city. A carriage overtook her and a voice calledher by flame. Looking up, she recognized the coloredcoachman of a neighbor. Ho was driving to the stationto meet a member of his employer's family. In frieñdlyand respectful tones he invited the lady to ride, and hisinvitation was promptly accepted. "How's all your folks?"the negro politely inquired, as the horses started in a brisktrot. The whole incident was a mere matte:' of course.'l'ho man had no thought of presuming. The bòúndariesbetween the races are so clearly marked that they can hoJumped over. The result is that we can be kind to thenegroes Itlid they can be kind to us. A white woman inlite South thinks nothing of employing a colored seam-stress toheip for a few days with the spring sewing, Thetwo v1Ii sow in tIto same room. But the negro womanilover dreams of eating at tite white woman's table-shedoesn't \vant to.

As bug as they are let alone, this sort of "caste" sys-tom suits the negroes exactly. They can work in the Southat their chosen vocations and can live their own lives,But "costnoi)oiitans" and politicians are not satisfied. Takefor instance the ease of Fiushing,Long Isländ, which nowpresenth a typical Eastern "segregation próblem!' In thattown there isa public school population of 6,000, of whichabout 500 are the children of negroes. Since timo out ofmind (until a few years back) there was maintained inFlushing a separate school for negroes-the Lincoln. Thisschool ists Convenient to the negro quarter, and it wasmore thoroughly equipped than either of the other publicschools Black teachers were emplciyetl at the Lincoln, and black children only were admittéd, Tisis was a sen-sibie arrangement, such as obtains in the South, It should

lsavo been allowed to remain as it was. What happened is eningly dililcult that nothing but an almost supurhumanwell told in tite course of an editorial in tilo San Francisco \5dom, energy and courage will ever effectually dealArgonaut of January 28: wIth lt.

This separate-school arrangement was satisfactory toeverybody until Colonel Theodore Roosovelt, thon Governorof Now York, conceived the idea of coddling the negro voteby abolishing special negro schools and admitting coloredchildren Into the general public schools, The school authorities at Flushing, Who had satisfactorily solved their ownlocal problem, reluctantly Obeyed tIte law, but it itas noverworked to the public satisfaction, The white psople ofFlushing have resented tite law as enforcing a social mix-up not desirable from any point of view. Many indeed car-ricci their resentment in the matter to tite extent of with-drawing- their children from tilo public schools and sendingtitcut to private institutions, notably a school in Flushingmaintained by tito Catholic Church, Sentiment against theanti-segregation law, always strong in Flushing, was madetutiso last week by ait incident in one of tite grammarschools, Among tite 15(13 of tIto times is a (lancing exorcisein which_all the titildren aro required to participate. Whenit came to assignment of partners one (lay last week in theLiecolo school, tite teacher gave a twelve-year-old wltltogirl the choice of dancing half an hour with a negro boyor being sont in disgrace to tite principal's oillco. TItis littlegirl had been brougltt up in ait ordinary American housoholdand had imbibed the ideas universally hold by tito whiterace, She objected to dancing with the negro lad, but didso Under pressure of authority, and when sIte reached hainea little later was hysterical vitli the emotion and frigittof tite experience, This incident lias literally called Flush-Ing to arino. A public meeting, attended by tile loadingmelt et tus towit, in indignant terms censured tIto teacherwits liad forced the little girl to dance with the negro, andpassed i'esolution of Protest and resentment against titeanti-segregation law. A committee, made up of a prominentjudge, a member of the school board, and tite editor of aleading Flushing flOWSpal)et', was appointed to arrange acampaign for return to tite system of segregated schools,It was emphatically declared to bo tite vishi of tite peopleof Flushing to give to negro children Opportunities forhtiswledge identical with those given to white children,But Ute domnitd is for separation of witito children fromblack children upon the theory that association is repugnantand harmful, that although now enforced for several years,it ha resulted in no benefIt to anybody,

i Itave quoted this from tito Argonaut, lest, in settingforth the situation in Flushing, I should be 8uspectedof taking a biased view because I am Southern. Severalyears ago I spent some timo in New York. I visited theschools and saw the whito children dancing with negroes.I raised ¡ny voice in protest, only to receive from titoteachers tito derisive answer: 'Oli, you Southern peoplehave such queer ideas."

And nowhear the conclusion of the Flushing incidentas viowed by tIte San Francisco editor:

The common satine of tIte country, we think, will sustainthe demand of the people of Flushing for tite right to ordertheir school affairs after tileir own ideas. And certainlynobody outside the game of politics wants to see any socialor other species at mix-up between the white and tito blackraces, Incidentally it mey be added that the people ofFlushing aro now In a position to Understand tite feelingof tite peepie et San Francisco when four years ago MrRoosevelt, by Imprudently meddling in affairs which didnet concern him, enforced upon us a school regulation whichhas never ceased to be an offenso, an irritation, and anInjury,

The people of Flushing now doubtless appreciate thecommon senso of the South which has persisted throughso_ many years of discouragement and calumny. Not longago Mr. William Archer, an Englishman, If 1 remembercorrectly, sande an extensive tour of observátion throughthe Southern States. From his conclusions, printed inMClut''i Magazijie, I quote two sentences:

Tito Sentii is in the maIn actuated by a just and far-reaching, 1f not far-seeing, lnotlnct, I believe that theproblem, tar from being unreal, Is so real and se disheart-

Conlmoitting on these two sotitoncos from ?lr. Archer'sreport, Collier's Weekly recoittly said:

We wialt that these convictions were in tite heart etevery New Englnn(ler who hastily calls a meeting to passresolutions on tile negro proi, lem, and every Northerneditor vlio Itas a foi'miila, bug cottventienalizeil, la which'ho writes, l)et'lodically, a scOl(llflg for tite Sottth. In tIteOutlook, tite other day, Lyman Abbott spoke of itis sym-patily vitii tite intense feelings of tite Soutlierti white, liii"strong cottiirmatioti" of the enligittetied views of I'residentEliot atid Ainbassadot' l3ryco ttbout the South's ultimateproblem, To tueco catites may be added that of 'l'hetttaaWentwortit Iligginson, iltt'VlVOr of tite generation of Abe-lition lenders and cominandet' of a colored regiment duringthe Civil War. In declining an ItitItation to attend a con-ference on the status of tite negro, Ito deplored all suchagitation, which makes tIte problem of tite Soutit ottly motediuiicult, Tito day may yet coins tylieti tite North will for-ntally acicnosvledgo that tite South's stubbortm refusal, sincethe Civil War, to yield ten melt of its stand in the matterof the relations of tIme races was an epochal coottibution tothe white race in AmerIca, hicit, under tite diiiiculties whichtilo Not'tlm pt'cssed down titotl tite South, could not havebeemi done differently, l'robably it would be impossible toprophesy a day moore unimappy for this cotttitiettt tItan tIteOtto on which tito Soutitet'tt white should abate otte iota etitis race-pride,

Since my memorable educational tour through the Easti have written for various publicatiotts initumorable articleson this race mix-up proposition, I consider it a questionof vast importance, and probably I shall hammer awayon it from timo to tittio as long as i live. And while Ihave a good start now, i want to say a few words con-corning those people who by tito thousattde wept over thatmaudhitt melodrama, "Tite Squaw Man." Tito most dan-goi'ous person, In a mollycoddle sort of way, is a mopperwho does not think. Amtd Really ali tuoppors ai'o iton-thinkers. When in the play the high-born Englishman, who has gone to live in Arizona, says of the squaw:"Of course she 1 lay wife. Do you think I would let myson come Into the world witlt tite stigma of illegitimacy?"all the moppers clapped titeir hands. But why sltould "ourhero" be so particular about Itow Itis son came into thewot'id and so indifferemtt as to what he would be afterho landed here? Ito know tIte child would not be white.MId he knew that the title to a proud earidom might someday revert to the boy. For tito "squaw man" was of noblebirth. lIe left 1.ingiamtd because (Itaving voluntarily takentIte blame for the misdeeds of lilo cousin, the earl) hewished to save the hottor of the family. In Arizona hemarried a squaw who had saved his life. He said after-wards that he tried to got away from her, but site lovedlilia and kept on hanging around. "Besides," he whines,"I was a man-a lonely male."

In timo, of course, the wicked earl dies, and the "squawman" is the next of kin, But it Is obvious that the womanIto has married can have no itlace among the English ans.tocracy. A great complication titen arises. The orchestraplays soft, low music; tito moppers pull out their extrahandkerchiefs. The valiant Itero swears he will nevorleave Itis Indian wife, but consents t send the half-breed boy to England to be educated for hin high place inlife. in the midst of perplexities the Indian wife is thought-fui enough to shoot herself. :

Thisis tIte play that ran for hundreds (or was it thou-suado?) of nights in New York. The papers said it hadthe 'atmosphere of the great West," the "tang of thealkali plains." As a matter of fact, it was the crudestkind of melodrama. But it carried with it an insidioussuggestion of the unfairness of theso-cafled race preju-

Concatenation No. 1673, Omohma, Nob., January 20, 1911,

Successful Concatenation at Kansas City.

The concatenation at Kansas Cityon January 25 provedall the success that had been predicted for It. While norecord was broken as to the number of initiates, the classof thlrty.five men lined up by Vicegerent N. H. Huey gavethe officers all they wanted to do.

The meeting was held In connection wIth the annualconvention of the Southwestern Lumbermen's Association, and In connection also with a called meeting of the Su-premo Niño. Itcan be realized, therefore, that VlcegcrentHuey had his hands full, both of business and entertain-ing. 11e was amply equal to all demands, however, andendeared himself to all the hundreds of tnetnbors of theOrder who were present and participatilig.

Brother Huey, it will be recalled, served one ternI asVicegerent at Salina, Kansas, where he made à high roc-ord as an efficient officer. On his removal to ICansas Citylast fall he was appointed Vicegerent for Western Districtof Missouri, and promptly set to work on arrangements fora big roùndup of the membership of Hoo-Jloo throughoutthe southwest in connectionwith the lumber meeting andthe meeting of the Supreme Nine. He lias every reasonto be proud of the successful outcome of his energetic andwell.dlrected efforts.

The businéss ti'ansactedat the meeting of the SupremeNino Is reported in añother column. The members of theNine In attendance tookpart In the concatenatIon, thosepresent being Snark Harry J. Stephenson,Supremo Representative, wore present, and boLli took anactive part iii the concatenation, boLli also piu'ticlpatlngin the meeting of tise Supreme Nine. Brother Stephensonarrived at Kansas City two clays in advance of the meet-ing, and was in close touch with Vicegoront Huoy in clos.Ing up arrangements for the big niecting.

Backward Strides of Science.Nothing so demonstrates the rapId backward strides

of modern science as buttermilk.Buttermilk used to be made in a churn, which was

tvorked on the back porch of a farmhouse by a fat hiredgirl who was expected to be married as soon as site couldsave P200 from her wages of $6 per month.

lit those benighted days buttermilk was a thick, whitefluid, velvety to the taste, an! plentifully Intermingledwith little chunks of butter. - - - -

It was obtained by dipping a long-bandIed dipper Intothe churn in tite cool shade --of the milkhouse, and whendrunk under these - circumstances the world was - perfect, there was not a cloud in the sky, and the little birds sanggleefully all tite day. - - - - --

Buttermilk nowadays Is made by catching a -quart ofskim milk loa bottle, which is brought by a man wearinga ititlon button, and who never saw a cow except on a

- - condensed milk billboard. - - -

- A pill Is then administered to the skim milk. The pill Is purchased at the drug stère. Water Is

added to thé mIlk. We almost saId "once more." -

After forty.eight hours the result Is called buttermilkand is drunk by folks who smack their lips over lt and tellwhat Dr. Metchitlk-off said about longevity.

Moderit buttermilk Is as blue as a rejected lover andas thin as Dr. Cook's explanations.

-

If the fat hired girl liad sot a churnful of such- stuffin the milkhousc the hired man who was waiting for herto save tip tite money would have resigned his positionits conductor of the sulky 1110W and woúld have gone as amissionary to the South Seas, - - . -
