PEER TEACHING COURSE

The “Peer Teaching” course is a special B-Block English course (603-HS course) open to students in all programs and offered every winter semester. Every fall, I recruit students with strong English language skills who are interested in learning how to teach and help other students. This course is a good opportunity for exceptional students to gain valuable peer tutoring experience while also obtaining a grade for the B-Block English course. Please encourage motivated and interested students in your classes to apply for my course by Friday, November 20th, 2015. The students who apply must have taken two English courses and passed them with a grade of 75% or over. Furthermore, they must be students who have not yet completed a B-Block English course. Application forms are available at my office (N-554) and at the office of the Faculty Dean of Science and General Studies (B-208). Applicants will be interviewed during the week of November 23rd and selected according to their level of excellence, commitment, and responsibility. Selected students will then be pre-registered into my course in January. If you require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at extension 7271 or to send me an email at [email protected] Thank you in advance for your help.

Page 3: Honours Social Science and Commerce Recruitment English ......UB Reviews for Math & Science Teacher run reviews will take place during most universal breaks. The following will take

Bonne chance!

Teaching Tip: What is the MTP

The MTP is the acronym for the Master Teacher Program, which is an educational program specifically designed for, and developed by, English Cegep Teachers. The MTP is a program which is at the Master’s level of education and is accredited by the Université de Sherbrooke (UdeS).

Answers to FAQs

1. Even teachers/participants who do not already have a Bachelor level degree, can be admitted into the MTP.

2. You must be working at a Cegep (teacher, staff, management) to be admitted into the MTP.

3. The courses are taught in English and take place in several Montreal Cégeps.

4. The MTP is offered in a blended learning format, with most classes held face-to-face (F2F) for participants working in the Montreal area, and a few classes held online when everyone is on individual computers/laptops at a location of your

choice. All participants use Moodle, which is the online course management system of the UdeS.

5. Although the reading and writing expectations are high for this program, participants are encouraged to make the assignments pertinent and tailored to their individual, specific teaching and learning needs.

6. The benefits of discussing pedagogical and educational issues and challenges with colleagues from your own and other colleges is a commonly expressed highlight of this program.

7. Experiencing practical ideas for teaching and learning in the MTP classes, provides teachers with immediate examples and suggestions for use in your own classes.

8. Remembering what it is like to be a student, helps participants to appreciate and understand our students better.

9. The cost is approximately $330 to be admitted and registered for the first 2-credit course. The next semester, another 2-credit course would cost approximately $250. All unions have Professional Development Funds that usually cover these costs, when the participant applies within the stated time delays.

10. There are three sequential programs within the MTP:

a. Graduate Certificate in College Teaching – GCCT (15 credits). Courses include: College Teaching and Course Design, Assessment as Learning, Instructional Strategies for Active Learning, How Students Learn, Motivation, Inclusion, Developmental Psychology, Dynamics and Diversity

b. Graduate Diploma in College Teaching – GDCT (15 additional credits for a total of 30 credits). Courses include: Teaching with Technology – Levels 1 and 2, Constructing Knowledge in Your Discipline, Constructing Knowledge Across the Disciplines, Philosophy of Education, Integration Seminar

c. Master of Education in College Teaching – M.Ed. (15 additional credits for a total of 45 credits). Courses focus on research: Exploring Research Strategies, Designing a Research Proposal, Critiquing a Research Proposal, and Conducting a Research Project

The list of MTP courses available for the Winter 2016 semester will be available soon and will be announced in the Intercom and distributed by email. Current MTP information is always available on the PDO website; click on Performa MTP.

For further discussion about the MTP or other pedagogical support and ideas, please contact Wilma Brown, or view other Teaching Tips online on the PDO web page.

Women’s Studies Major: Call for Submission for Core Courses

Do you teach a course whose content concentrates primarily on issues pertaining to women and/or gender? If so, please consider submitting your course for inclusion in the Women’s Studies Major. Submitting your course ensures that students who have an interest in feminist and gender studies can more easily acquire academic recognition for their chosen specialization. Moreover, students become part of a community of like-minded students and are invited to participate in a variety of activities, many of which take place in the Women’s Studies Resource Centre (A573). Your only obligation is to indicate to students that your course is part of the Women’s Studies Major at the beginning of each semester. Brochures and other information are provided to you to facilitate this communication.

Qualifying courses fall into two categories: “A” courses are those that are exclusively focussed on women’s or gender issues; “B” courses are those that contain a significant, but not exclusive, focus on these issues. Please consult our brochure to see a list of existing courses: http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/womens-studies/files/2015/08/womens-studies-brochure-2015.pdf For more information or to suggest your course, please contact Maggie Kathwaroon ([email protected]).

Wednesday Noontime Concert

For this Wednesday’s concert, we are very proud to announce that the entire concert will be in the hands of one of our brightest former students. Sarah Rossy, the 2013 graduating class valedictorian, winner of the Meg Sircom scholarship for creative writing that same year, and former jazz-voice student, returns to Vanier to perform a solo concert in the Auditorium. Still a student herself, she is, together with several of the members of her band, currently in the music program at McGill. In November 2013, she created the band – Shyre, an ensemble in which she is the singer, pianist, musical director, as well as composer of all the music. The music has been described as “an ethereal and innocent marriage of orchestra and pop”. On Saturday November 7th, the band will be performing at L’Astral in Montreal (see the poster) where they will be launching their new album.

On Wednesday, Sarah will be performing solo – songs from both her first recording as well as her new album. She will also be answering questions from members of the audience about her experiences both as a music student and working musician. So please join us at 12.30 on Wednesday in the Auditorium for this very special not-to-be-missed event
