ProgramThis short-term study abroad program is for students registered in Modern Greek H241, the Culture of Contemporary Greece that will be offered by the Department of Greek and Latin in winter quarter 2009. The faculty instructor for the class will be Professor Gregory Jusdanis. During winter quarter students will explore the culture of contemporary Greece through the study of Greek history, literature, and folklore. The class will investigate the rise of the Greek nation, the role to the classical and Byzantine past, Greek language, politics, rituals, social relationships, food, and customs. The sources for the class will be literature, film, history, popular culture, and everyday life.

LocationThe in-country program will begin in Athens where the group will visit key archaeological sites such as the Acropolis, the National Museum, the National Gallery, the Byzantine Museum, the Benaki Museum, churches, as well as modern sites such as the Plaka and the flea-market. Tentative plans include visits to the famed island of Hydra, the city of Nafplion, as well as the archaeological sites of Olympia, Mycenae, Delphi and the Byzantine monastery of Osios Loucas.

Courses and CreditThe program begins with the 5-credit Honors (GEC) course Modern Greek H241: The Culture of Contemporary Greece that will be offered by the Department of Greek and Latin during winter quarter 2009. Students will earn an additional 3 credit hours of Modern Greek 697 for the overseas component.

AccommodationsParticipants will be housed in double rooms in a centrally located hotel in Athens.

Acceptance into the Program Initial acceptance to the program will be determined based on each student’s demonstrated interest in participating in an intensive, cultural immersion experience, as evaluated through their program application. Acceptance is conditional based on the student’s academic record and successful completion of the winter quarter course.

Program CostsThe cost of the program is Ohio State tuition plus a program fee of $2340. The program fee includes international round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, breakfasts, field trips, entrance fees, some group meals, in-country transportation, and supplemental health insurance. Students are responsible for pre-departure expenses (passport and immunizations), non-group meals, and personal expenses.

The Study Abroad Program Fee is due one month prior to the first day of winter quarter 2010 classes.

The Office of International Affairs reserves the right to increase the study abroad program fee if the actual airfare or exchange rate exceeds the estimated amount.

Funding Opportunities for Study Abroad The University Honors & Scholars Center has travel grants (based on financial need) available for students. If you are interested in applying for a travel grant, please attach a statement describing your financial need to the end of the personal statement portion of the study abroad application.

Pre-Departure OrientationAll students are required to participate in on-campus pre-departure orientations organized by the Office of International Affairs. These sessions will offer important information on travel, health, academic expectations, and culture.

Application InformationApplicants must submit the Office of International Affairs Study Abroad Application online via buckeyelink.osu.edu.  Please note that upon application, a $150 application fee will be assessed to your Statement of Fees and Accounts. The application fee will be refunded only if you are not accepted or submit a written request to withdraw your application prior to the application deadline.

If you withdraw any time after the date of your notification of acceptance to a study abroad program, you will be responsible for any non-recoverable costs that have been incurred on your behalf plus a $200 cancellation fee.
