4 / Hartford Hospital, 2016

Hartford Hospital and the entire healthcare industry have been challenged in so many ways.In 2016 we saw tremendous cuts at the state leveland now face great uncertainty on the federalside. But through it all Hartford Hospital has continued our transformational work with incredible skill and compassion. As the tertiarycare facility within Hartford HealthCare, we haveremained agile, staying ahead of the curve in innovation, quality, and safety. And we havebegun to focus on creating a world-class patientexperience with our platform: Every Moment Matters.

As the hospital that other hospitals in the stateturn to for the highest-quality care for their mostchallenging patients, we continue to step up tothe call. Our Transfer Center volume in FY 2016was 6,131 compared with 5,614 in FY 2015; 4,642in FY 2014; 4,089 in FY 2013; and 3,418 in FY 2012.Life Star transports have grown over the past yearas well.

Our efforts to be the region’s best and most important hospital have not gone unnoticed. U.S.News & World Report once again named HartfordHospital the top hospital in the region, and amongthe best in the nation, with high performance indiabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, nephrology, orthopedics, and pulmonology. Becker’s Hospital Review placed usamong the top 100 hospitals in the nation. For the21st consecutive year, the National Research Corphonored us with the Consumer Choice Award forbest quality, image, and reputation. Life Star became the first air-medical, critical-care transport team in the nation to receive the prestigious American Association of Critical-CareNurses Beacon Award for Excellence, an awardtraditionally given to hospital intensive care units. And the American College of Surgeon’s NationalSurgical Quality Improvement Program recog-nized us for meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care.

One of our biggest projects, the implementation of the Epic electronic health record(EHR), went live in August, enabling us to have one patient record for every patientthroughout the Hartford

HealthCare system. It was a monumental task, requiring an enormous amount of training forstaff members already extremely busy caring for ahigh volume of very sick patients. The successfuldeployment of the electronic health record earneda 5 out of 5 rating from Epic for outstanding implementation. We are always striving for ways to improve

patient outcomes and the overall health of ourcommunities. An important step Hartford Health-Care has taken in the process is the developmentof an institute model of care that brings togetherall aspects of disease management and wellnessin a highly coordinated fashion. We have recruitedvery strong leadership and are seeing success onmany fronts with this model of clinical care. We are breaking down the traditional silos andbringing true value to our patients and their families and greater satisfaction to our staff forthe work we are able to do. Fiscal 2016 was indeed a year of great accom-

plishments at Hartford Hospital. Throughout, yoursupport has been invaluable. As we move forwardin 2017 in an ever-changing healthcare landscape,we are sincerely grateful that you are with us.

Message from JUDITH M. KEPPELMAN and CAROL S. GARLICK, CFRE

Innovation, Quality, and Safety Continue to Be Our Hallmarks

Thanks to charitable gifts from donors like you, amazing work continues to happen at HartfordHospital. More than $8.7 million in gifts and newpledges was raised in FY 2016 through the generosity of our friends, grateful patients andfamilies, Corporators, board members, volunteers, and Hartford Hospital employees. You have helped us thrive in an environment ofeconomic challenges and continuous change.

With this Honor Roll of Donors—as we recognize those who have partnered with us toimprove the health and healing of the peopleand communities we serve—we recognize someof the accomplishments your gifts have enabled, including:

The lead phase of the Campaign for Hartford Hospital continued to increase access to care and strengthen thehealth of our community. Under the leadershipof Chair George Estes, the campaign reached$50.3 million by the end of the fiscal year on September 30, and surpassed $62 million early in 2017. Gifts to the campaign have supported capital improvements throughout our campus, including strategic initiatives such as the expansion of the Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation;

the Brownstone relocation project; and the development of the Ayer Neuroscience Institute, among others.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Hartford HealthCare Bone & Joint Institute culminated years of planning andconstruction. The capstone of the Campaign forHartford Hospital, the Bone & Joint Institute wasunveiled for the public in November. Welcoming its first patients in early 2017, New England’s only orthopedic specialty hospitaloffers an immense range of surgical procedures, new technologies, and amenities in one location.

The 2016 Black & Redmarked a quarter century of community support of the programscritical to the well-being of our patients. The25th gala netted a total of $1,040,000 to benefitthe Bone & Joint Institute, making it the fifthconsecutive year that the hospital’s signaturefund-raiser netted more than $1 million for itschosen beneficiary.

And the Hartford Hospital Auxiliary is deserving of special thanks for its ongoing work to ensure that the hospital has the resources to improve programs and patientcare. In FY 2016, the Auxiliary provided nearly$400,000 in grants for special projects as it raised funds to benefit the Brownstone Ambulatory Care Clinic and nursing education.

The generosity of our community is inspiring. In 2017, as we continue to advance patient careand safety through initiatives that include increasing our critical care bed capacity and developing a phase 1 cancer clinical trials unit at the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute’sHelen & Harry Gray Cancer Center, we offer are sincere gratitude for your support throughthe years.

Corporators help Hartford Hospital reach out to the community and help the community connect with us. They let us know how we are doing as we strive to providean exceptional experience to every patient every day. Corporators also assist the hospital by serving as volunteers,on task forces or committees, or by encouraging others tovolunteer. Corporators are among the most loyal supportersof the hospital through their charitable gifts, thus sending an important endorsement to the greater community of donors

10 / Hartford Hospital, 2016

Volunteer services reported 94,202 hoursfrom1,037 volunteers in 240 areasof the organization from October 2015 to September 2016.

Volunteers’ contribution of time is equivalent to 47 full-time employees.

Contribution of time in dollars is equal to $ 2.6 million based on a dollar value as assigned by the Independent Sector.

44,000 hours were served in direct patientcare roles by 655 volunteers.

76 teen volunteers completed our summer program in 2016.

54 volunteers serve annually on hospital advisory boards.

22 Hartford Hospital employeesvolunteered during their off-work time, contributing 618 hours to programs that enhance the patient experience and offer opportunities to engage employees beyond their work day.

Hartford Hospital pet therapy teams contributed 3,400 hours of service to our patients and staff.

61 percent of the volunteer workforce is female. The median age of a HartfordHospital volunteer (for those who provided dates of birth) is 39. 4 percent of our current volunteers are over the age of 60.

Our oldest active volunteer is 92.

4 active volunteers have servedgreater than 60 years each.

Volunteer Services received 2,053applications in FY 2016.

Rohit Makol of South Windsor is not your typicalHartford Hospital volunteer. The University of Connecticut sophomore has been spending his summers volunteering at the hospital since 2013,logging more than 700 hours to date, which is a lotconsidering Volunteer Services’ VolunTeen programrequires a minimum of only 48 hours each summer.

Makol, who plans to attend medical school, isn’tone for minimums, however. “I am motivated by theidea that I can be better and do better,” he says. “It’s important to put your heart into anything thatyou pick up. … I know the first year I volunteered, I pretty much developed a routine of going to myshift, eating lunch, going back to my shift, and thengoing home. The following summer, I made an effortto greet people, help out strangers, and sit and talkto other volunteers during lunch. Doing all thesethings made the experience so much more rewarding and enjoyable.”

There are over 200 volunteer positions availablethroughout the hospital. The Summer VolunTeenProgram accepts students 14 to 18 years old who are in high school or are new graduates with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. They must be available to volunteer for at least six of the eight-week program, contributing a minimum of eight hours per week.

The commitment is substantial considering theattraction of the long carefree days of summer orthe opportunity to earn money. But for students likeMakol, the exposure to all that goes on at a hospitalis invaluable.

“The positive atmosphere and environment atHartford Hospital are things that you don’t alwaysfind in other hospitals,” he says. “Even before youenter the doors, you are greeted by upbeat valet people. At the front desk, you have receptionistswho are always smiling, security personnel who arereally friendly and are ready to help you find your location, and passers-by who always say ‘Hi’.”

He spent his first summer at the hospital workingas perioperative clerk in Jefferson Building and withmedical records at the Brownstone Clinic. He hasworked at the Center for Education, Simulation andInnovation, a highlight of which was participating inactive shooter drills with SWAT teams: “It was anamazing experience.” And he enjoyed interactingwith patients at the new Bone & Joint Institute.

“I’ve worked as an OR aide, which was really coolbecause I got to wear scrubs and deliver blood packsto the OR. I helped out the main desk a lot, made

announcements on the intercom, and helped anesthesia supply restock their supply room. I alsoworked with the Dialysis Department. These jobs allowed me to see many different things at the hospital.”

Because of his positive approach, in 2015 he was selected as one of the five shift leaders for the VolunTeen program.

“The shift leader role was implemented in 2015 to assist in the running of the summer VolunTeenprogram,” said Eileen Pelletier, director of VolunteerServices. “I wanted to make the program more manageable in terms of staff time. In fact, the role allowed me to add additional features to the program.”

Shift leaders assist with everything from interviewing potential new volunteers for the program to providing oversight of educational sessions to mentoring other summer volunteers to functioning as a liaison between hospital staffand the high school volunteers.

To be chosen for the shift leader role, studentsmust have completed at least 50 hours of volunteerservice at Hartford Hospital, have a current GPA of 3.0 or higher, be in good standing with the program, and possess excellent interpersonal andcommunication skills as well as computer skills.

“I was surprised by the amount of flexibility thatcomes with the shift leader job,” Makol says. “As long as you are on top of your duties, there are a lot of opportunities to pursue projects alongsideyour regular duties. I decided that I wanted to helpput together a yearbook and music video. After wegot approval for the project, we were able to makethe summer experience a lot more enjoyable for our VolunTeens.”

“Volunteering makes me feel empowered,” Makol says. “I’ve met so many people, I have seen different parts to the hospital, and, most importantly, I have learned a great deal about myself. I love putting a smile on someone’s face and knowing that at the end of the day, I made a positive impact.”

Helping Others Empowers VolunTeen

The 1854 Society recognizes individuals whose planned gifts have been received or will someday accrue to Hartford Hospital. Planned gifts include bequests made through testamentary devices, such as wills, retirement plans, and revocable trusts, as well as lifetime gifts that provide income to donors and their beneficiaries. Life income gifts, such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and the hospital’sPooled Income Fund, typically involve the transfer of gift assets, immediate tax advantages and continuing income streams to the donor, with future distributions to the hospital for its general or specific charitable purposes. Thoughtful gift planning offers each person the opportunity to make an endowed gift that will continue to help the hospital for generations to come. We are deeply grateful to members of the 1854 Society andespecially appreciative of their thoughtful commitment to the future financial well-being of Hartford Hospital. Their names are listed here as they requested at the time of their introduction to the 1854 Society.

Bone & Joint InstituteThe ribbon-cutting for the capstone of the campaign, theHartford HealthCare Bone & JointInstitute at Hartford Hospital, washeld in the fall of 2016. The newfacility welcomed its first patientsin early 2017. New England’s firstand only orthopedic hospital, withits team of highly trained and experienced physicians and staff, offers a range of sub-specialties,bringing together decades of experience to provide innovativemusculoskeletal care with a patient-centered approach.

As orthope-dic cases move to the new facility, nursing units are being realignedand surgical and neuroscience capacity is being expanded. The process, which began in January 2017 and is expected to be completed in July, will result in an increase in privaterooms; updated critical care alignment; better co-horting ofheart and vascular patients; andgreater flexibility with HartfordHospital staff.

The evening featured Chicago as the headlineentertainment; hors d'oeuvres, dinner, anddessert by Max Catering; and jazz and late-nightdancing to Flipside.

We owe much of the success of the gala to itssponsors, including title sponsor The Bone & JointInstitute at Hartford Hospital Physicians, LLC; premier sponsor EMC2/VCE; marquee sponsor The Hartford; and leadership sponsor UnitedTechnologies. We also thank Rebecca Corbin Loreeand Connie Weaver, co-chairs of the Black & RedCommittee, and the committee’s members.

The Bone & Joint Institute is transforminghow Hartford Hospital delivers care, with all aspects of musculoskeletal care—from preventionto recovery—located in one facility and with outreach into the community to improve overallhealth. The institute is also providing an infrastructure for the growth of the hospital byfreeing up space across the campus for more private rooms, operating rooms, and intensivecare units.

The gala, which was broad-cast live on NBC Connecticut, also marked the hospital’s “Step It Up”campaign encouraging ourcommunity to pledge to increase activity levels.

The first Black & Red Balltook place on February 14,1992, when the communityraised $110,000 to benefit infants with heart problems.Over the years, the goals ofthe Black & Red have grownas has the community’s response. Since 2013, theevent has raised more than$1 million each year for itschosen beneficiary.

Blessing, love, joy, happiness, celebration, excitement, fun and wonderful are some of thewords that traditionally come with the announcement of a new baby.

But when a new mother says words like overwhelmed, angry, sad, confused, irritated, guilty, hopeless, neglectful, anxious, and resentful more accurately reflect her state of mind, the effect ofthose feelings on the entire family can be seriousand all may need some level of support or treatment.

About 1 in 9 women experiences postpartum depression, according to the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention. Heather Quinn understandshow devastating postpartum mood disorders can befor the mother, the child, and the family. She suffered postpartum psychosis with the birth of her second child.

“For one year of my life, I was consumed in impulses to harm my baby and myself,” she says.“Slowly I started realizing what I had been throughand the wreckage all around me: a failing marriage,

a child that I was just starting to like, getting off themeds, finding myself, forgiving myself, and realizingthe effect all of this had on my husband. In my son’sthird year of life, I started to find myself again.“My husband, Jeff, and I went through it

completely alone,” says Quinn, who lives in Durhamand works for Hartford HealthCare. “As we started totalk more openly about what we were experiencingthere was nowhere for me or my husband to go andno one was reaching out offering reasoning, support,or even acknowledgment of what we were goingthrough.”

Meagan O’Connell Fazio experienced differentbut no less agonizing symptoms. “I had never heardof postpartum anxiety and the only thing I reallyknew about postpartum depression was that ‘youdon't bond with your baby’,” she says. “I fortunatelydid not have that symptom. Instead I had weeks ofcrippling anxiety and panic attacks, as well as depression that was so debilitating my mother hadto move in with us to help take care of me. I knewsomething was seriously wrong, but I didn't know what.”

Fazio, who lives in West Hartford, says she visitedseveral doctors and tried different medications, butnothing helped. Finally, she was admitted to the Day Hospital at Women and Infants Hospital inProvidence, R.I. “For nine days, my son and I spent

about six hours each day at the hospital with other mothers and babies.

When I went to the hospital, I was hopeless aboutthe future and barely able to care for myself. When I left, I was looking forward to the rest of mylife with my baby and was confident I was the bestmother I could be.”

Although postpartum mood disorders are themost common complications of childbirth, they areoften misunderstood, stigmatized, and kept as adeep dark secret.

To help change that and to help fill the void inlocal services that Fazio and Quinn experienced, theInstitute of Living (IOL) launched the PeripartumMood Disorders Program in the fall of 2015 with assistance through a grant from Hartford Founda-tion for Public Giving.

“The OBY/GYN department, spearheaded by Dr. Shelia Gately and Dr. Jack Greene, came to usthree years ago asking us to do something thatwould be organized specifically for the care of thesemothers,” says Arthur Guerra, APRN-BC, who servesas the clinical director for the program and notes itis important to treat not only mothers, but also fathers who may be at risk during the perinatal period. The Peripartum Mood Disorders Programhelps to identify and address the needs of momswho may suffer from anxiety, depression, or othermental health problems.

“Without the organized systematic approach that the Hartford Foundation for Public Givinghelped us start,” Guerra says, “there wouldn’t be

adequate specialization, time, or focus to address this

significant adult health problem.”

Postpartum mood disorders can arise from thecombination of the hormonal changes that occurduring and after pregnancy, psychological adjustment to motherhood, and fatigue. Depressionin the peripartum period is associated with pretermbirth, low birth weight, and an abnormal fetal heartrate. In the long run, children of depressed mothershave been found to have impaired cognitive andemotional abilities. Risk factors for peripartum depression include prior depression, poor social support, poor quality of intimate relationship, and negative life events.

Since the IOL began offering services through thePeripartum Mood Disorders Program, “there hasbeen a constant flow of moms who have come inwith pain and we have reduced their burden,”Guerra says. Treatment includes comprehensivepsychiatric evaluations, medication management, and individual/family psychotherapy. Other impor-tant treatment options include mother-infant attachment assessment and treatment in collaboration with the IOL’s Child/Adolescent Department. Patients are referred by OB/GYNgroups, community mental health providers, privatepractitioners, and self-referrals. The service is available to women within the Greater Hartford areawho are pregnant, contemplating pregnancy, or immediately post-delivery.

Quinn and Fazio can see the challenges of motherhood more clearly these days. Quinn’s son isnow 6. Fazio’s son is 4. Both mothers speak publiclyabout their experiences with postpartum mood disorders in an effort to help other mothers who are suffering.

Fazio offers some advice: “Don't be afraid toadmit something isn't right,” she says. “Don't beafraid to ask for help. Don't be afraid to fight if thathelp is not enough. It will be difficult, but I promisethat you and your baby are worth it.”

YLAC Sets Record as It Helps Care for CommunityHartford Hospital’s Young Leaders Advisory Council(YLAC) marked a year of growth with a record-setting gift of more than $22,000 to the BrownstoneAmbulatory Care Clinic. The funds, which wereraised through the organization’s signature eventSpring Into Action, held at Hot Tomato’s in Hartfordin May 2016, helped the clinic purchase medicalequipment.

In addition to raising money for the BrownstoneClinic, Spring Into Action celebrated the HartfordHospital Auxiliary and Scott Merkelson, DMD. Bothreceived the YLAC Spring Into Action Award for theirsupport of the clinic. The Auxiliary has donated$350,000 to the clinic over the past two years.Merkelson was honored for more than 40 years ofoutstanding volunteer service at the clinic. He be-came a volunteer attending in the general dentistrysection of the Department of Dentistry in 1975 andhas volunteered over 4,000 hours at the clinic sincethen, helping to train well over 100 residents.

The Brownstone Clinic serves the community’smost vulnerable population—those with limited orno access to healthcare. It has over 57,000 visits annually for adult primary, specialty, and dental care.

In addition to a successful Spring Into Action, YLAC broke ground on a few other fronts in FY 2016.

Annual Meeting Marks MilestoneIn the fall, YLAC members celebrated the

organization’s first five years with an Inaugural Annual Meeting. The breakfast meeting drew 54 members and guests who came together to net-work with one another and to learn more aboutYLAC’s goals.

With a Facebook group established over the summer, the membership has a new line of communication, where upcoming events notices, photos from YLAC events as well as newsworthy notices from Hartford Hospital at large are shared. The group went live on LinkedIn as well.Under the leadership of the Community

Involvement Committee, chaired by StephanieFrazao, YLAC members collected baby items to helpfamilies in the Nurturing Connections Program atHartford Hospital. The program links new parents tovolunteers and others who may provide educationand support that can help them adjust to the manydemands of parenthood. The families are providedwith critical information beginning while themother is pregnant or while the mother and babyare still in the hospital. Over the 2015 holiday season, YLAC members donated and collected itemsranging from clothing and blankets to toiletries andtoys for families who receive support from program.

Young Leaders Advisory CouncilYLAC members also supported the hospital by

assisting with Volunteer Services’ summer volunteerprogram for high school students. Members helpedto interview applicants and planned and facilitateda resume/interview workshop held in August. In addition to the student volunteers, YLAC

members assisted students in need from GreaterHartford through the Institute of Living’s backpackand school supplies drive, donating items like backpacks, markers, notebooks, and pens and pencils.

Adding to organization’s busy agenda were a breakfast and a lunch-and-learn series with hospital leadership. The group also held numerous networking events.

Hartford Hospital's Young Leaders Advisory Council is made up of early- to mid-career professionals in the Hartford region who serve asambassadors of Hartford Hospital. They strive to educate an upcoming generation about HartfordHospital's innovative programs and services, as well as involve and cultivate emerging community leaders with an affinity for the hospital. Memberscome from a wide range of industries, including the nonprofit sector, insurance, finance, law, health care, and others.

Members of the Young Leaders Advisory Council (YLAC) present a check to HartfordHospital’s Brownstone Clinic. The funds wereraised through YLAC's fifth annual Spring Into Action.

••••••••••••••••Brownstone Clinic on Track for 2018 OpeningThe Brownstone Ambulatory Care Clinic, currently located on Retreat Avenue, is central to Hartford Hospital’smission of responding to the healthcare needs of our community. The shell of a new facility at 132-134 Jefferson Street that will house some clinic services was completed in 2016. With leading grants from Travelers Cos. and United Technologies Corp., and support from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the Hartford Hospital Auxiliary, and generous individual donors helping to narrow a funding gap, plans are in place to complete the project. A ribbon cutting is projected for 2018.
