    Introduction

Honeywell offers a variety of Linear Hall-effect Sensor ICs to meet awide range of industrial and medical application needs

They are designed to monitor magnetic fields from a permanentmagnet or an electromagnet

    Honeywell has engineered these devices

to enable top performance, precision, repeatability, and ruggedness

Various package styles include: Subminiature SOT-23: SS39ET (new) Flat TO-92 straight leads: SS49E, SS49E-L,

    and SS49E-T3

    Flat TO-92 formed leads: SS49E-F andSS49E-T2

    Features and Benefits

Honeywells Linear Hall-effect Sensor ICs offer many features andbenefits, including:

Cost-effective Designed and manufactured for cost competitiveness All packages can be supplied on tape for automated, lower-cost assembly

Miniature and sub-miniature construction SS39ETs small footprint takes up little space on the PC board, often ideal forcompact designs with tight space requirements

Small size typically allows for more components to be placed onto the board

Flexible Interfaces with many electrical components without buffering

Responds to either positive or negative Gauss Responds to both North and South poles

Stable and accurate Thermally balanced integrated circuit allows for stable operation and accuracy

    over the full temperature range

Energy efficient Low voltage capability as low as 2.7 Vdc and reduced current consumption

of only 6 mA at 5 Vdc help make these products energy efficient

Easy PC board interface Single current sourcing output for common electronic circuits

    Low noise output

Virtually eliminates the need for external filtering Wide operating temperature range

Temperature range of -40 C to 100 C [-40 F to 212 F] allows for use in awide range of environments

    Potential Applications Industrial

Tamper prevention in uti lity meters Thieves sometimes attempt to bypass the operation of an electric, gas or

water meter by attaching a strong magnet to it. The utility usage is

underestimated when the magnetsaturates the current transformer or slows the spinning wheel.

Install Honeywells Linear Hall-effect Sensor ICs in multiple locations insidethe meter to detect the abnormal presence of a magnetic field.Send an alarm to the utility company or recordthis fraudulent activity in memory for access

    at a later date.

Honeywells Linear Hall-effect Sensors may potentially be used inseveral Industrial applications, including:

    Potential Applications Industrial (continued)

Magnetic code reading in safes, security, and building accesscontrol systems A secure electronic lock can be designed using an array of linear magnetic

sensors configured to detect a magnetic pattern. If a strong external magnetwere brought in proximity to the array, it would be read as a random attemptand could trigger an alarm

Honeywells Linear Hall-effect Sensor ICs may be used to unlock the systemonly if the magnetic field read by each sensor is of the correct polarity andwithin acceptable amplitude limits

Without reproducing the exact magnetic flux pattern, it would be virtuallyimpossible to unlock the system with a single, or even multiple, strongmagnets

Honeywells Linear Hall-effect SensorICs provide sensitivity, output, and verysmall size

    Potential Applications Industrial (continued)

Water pump control in heavy-duty equipment and appliances A water pump is essentially a special application of an electric motor; these

pumps are commonly manufactured for home appliances Honeywells Linear Hall-effect Sensor ICs may be used to generate an

enhanced control signal for better resolution of the rotor position, which canimprove the motor's efficiency

A crude RPM measurement would verify that the pump is working properly;the output of the sensor may be used as analarm or a shut-off signal to help preventmotor overload

Pump control in aquariums A pump may use one or more valves, engage a clutch or gear to begin, or

move a lever or piston a specified distance Honeywells Linear Hall-effect Sensor ICs may be used to verify that the

valve, clutch, lever or piston is in the specified position
