    Awang lived with his father who was a pious man.

    He was a dutiful son who always did as he was told.

    One day Awangs father was called upon to reciteprayers at a neighbours house. Before leaving, he

    informed his son: If anyone should ask for me, please

    call me immediately.

    A little later, a man came looking for Awangs

    father. Awang began shouting for his father all theway from his own doorstep to the neighbours house.

    By the time he arrived, he was gasping for breath.

    Awangs father was curious he explain to him thatnext time he should walk slowly and greet everyone.

    Then on reaching the house, he should shake hands

    and whisper the message in his ear.

    A few days later, their house caught fire. Awangremembered his fathers advice. He walked slowly tothe house where his father was reciting the prayers.

    Along the way, he greeted everyone courteously. Heentered the house, shook hand with everyone andthen whispered in his fathers ear.

    What? The house is on fire? yelled his father.He scolded Awang for his foolishness, but it was toolate. The house has been reduced to ashes.

    Awang was driven away by his father. Eventuallyhe found employment as a guard at the kings palace.

    One day, Awang was approached by a band of

    robbers to help them rob the king. Obediently, Awang

    filled some boxes with the kings treasures.

    The chief robber then told Awang to let down the

    boxes over a wall. Awang saw the robbers standing

    below and drop the boxes on them. the robbers were

    killed on the spot.

    The king was pleased and rewarded Awang byappointing him commander of his troops.
