Washing machine hose fail-ures cause as much as $150 mil-lion in damage each year tohomes in the United States andCanada. But by taking a few pre-cautions, you can greatly reduceyour chances of getting soaked bya leaky washing machine hose.Inspect those hoses

Make it a point to periodical-ly inspect your washing machinehoses for signs of wear and tear.Look for bubbles, cracks or fray-ing. If you see any of these signs,turn off the water supply to yourwasher and replace the hoses.Can I replace them myself?

Replacing washing machine

hoses is as easy as hooking up awater hose to a water spigot. Anda new set of hoses costs between$10 and $20 at most home repair,hardware and plumbing supplyoutlets.

To install new hoses, first shutoff the water supply to yourwashing machine. Close the mainshutoff valve in your house if a

valve closer to your washingmachine is not available.Unscrew the old hoses one at atime, draining any water into thewashing machine.

Carefully line up the threadsand screw the hoses on tightly.Once you’ve installed the newhoses, open the shutoff valvesslowly. Run the machine through

a cycle and check carefully forleaks.

Carefully move the washerback toward the wall, keeping thehose free from kinks or tightbends. Allow at least four inchesor 11 centimeters between thewater connection and the back ofyour washer.Anything else?• Turn off the water supply to thewasher if you plan to leave yourhome for more than one day.Most washing machine manufac-turers recommend shutting thewater off anytime you are notusing the machine.• Consider installing or having aprofessional plumber install a sin-gle-lever shutoff valve, whichmakes it easier to turn off thewater supply to your washingmachine.• Another option is a water ham-mer arrestor, which absorbsincreased water pressure whenthe electric valve in your washershuts off. There are types that eas-ily attach to the valves whereyour hose is connected.• Make sure everyone in yourhouse knows where the watershutoff valve is and how to use it.
