Homework 101
+What is the GOLDEN RULE of helping your child with homework?
+You must remember to…
…NEVER work harder than your
child.
+Tips for Math Homework
Display a genuine curiosity and respect for the material whether or not you are able to do the mathematics.
Don’t say, “I can’t do that problem. I was never any good at math."
+ASK QUESTIONS about the concept being learned…
What is the concept or idea you are studying?
What steps can you use to solve the problem?
+DO…
…Ask leading questions
…Give enough time for your child to formulate a response.
+DON’T…
…do the work for your child. Make sure they are writing down the steps used to find the solution.
…hover! Ask them to find another way to see if an answer is reasonable.
+The Middle School Math Brain
Middle schoolers are still very concrete thinkers. Using complex variables and equations may cause more confusion. Instead look for a pattern or set up a table.
+Other strategies to try…
If you understand the concept, make up a mock quiz.
Encourage them to ask a classmate or teacher for help.
+Tips for Social Studies or History
