The Next Step® summer internship program is a unique opportunity for college students to gain first-hand knowledge and experience working in the financial industry. Cambridge offers a broad spectrum of opportunities beyond the financial world that will exceed practical experience and enhance your college studies. This internship is a full-time, 10-week, paid program that typically runs May to August. A variety of majors are encouraged to apply.

Accounting(Commissions and Fee Billing and Processing Services)The Accounting Department has a rewarding opportunity within the Commissions and Fee Billing and Processing Teams, offering experience with the everyday functions of an accounting department in the back office of a broker-dealer. The intern will obtain a broad overview of accounting as a whole and expand their understanding of accounting principles while reviewing processes for efficiencies. Efficiency recommendations will be solicited from the intern and expected as a part of their review of existing processes and procedures. This position will also play a key part in the ongoing continuous improvement efforts within the Accounting Department including root cause analysis, metric identification and tracking, and process mapping of processes currently under review. Ideal candidates will have completed intermediate-level accounting courses, be a self-starter, have the ability to multi-task, and work well within a team environment.

Advocacy & SupervisionThe Advocacy & Supervision Team interacts daily with our nationwide network of rep-advisors as both relationship managers and home office OSJ supervisors. The Advocacy & Supervision intern supports the team by reviewing and updating SharePoint training materials website, conducting analysis of payouts for rep-advisors, developing industry-specific rule book reference guides and mail mergers. This internship will offer exposure to other teams, including Business Development and Transition, to increase the big picture view of the financial services industry for the intern. Great communication skills and an ability to travel on minimum two-day trips are essential.

Brokerage OperationsThe Brokerage Operations intern works in conjunction with seasoned Operations veterans to understand the inner workings of a broker-dealer. Candidates can expect to gain knowledge integral to a career at a broker-dealer and will work on enhancing current processes throughout the internship. Applicants should be interested in the financial services industry and be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Business DevelopmentThe Business Development Team offers a rewarding internship experience for a student who loves problem solving, communicating with people, and developing new strategies. The Business Development intern will learn how to implement marketing campaigns, send and analyze targeted messages, and get an in-depth look into the nature of the recruiting profession. The internship gives opportunities to use Clickback, sendoutcards.com, and to work collaboratively with our Public Relations and Creative Marketing Team to develop flyers, booklets, brochures, postcards, national advertising, and e-marketing materials. In addition, the intern will help implement marketing campaigns developed by Cambridge.

Client Solutions If you want to gain in-depth insight into the world of a broker-dealer, join the Client Solutions Team. The intern will learn how Cambridge rep-advisors interact with their clients and prospects. This internship provides direct exposure to a wide variety of investment and insurance options used to assist rep-advisors in obtaining the best solution for their client.

Commissions AnalystThe Accounting Department has a rewarding internship opportunity within the Commissions Team, offering experience to learn data and functions across departments (clearing with trading, assets under management/account data with CDW team, basic SQL with Information Systems (IS), PayCheque I and PayCheque II functionality with IS and Licensing). The Commissions intern will have ownership of tasks and collaboration across these departments. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, have the ability to multi-task, work well within a team environment, communicate effectively, meet deadlines, and have the ability to provide business analysis, basic SQL programming, and user acceptance testing.

Competitive AnalysisThe Competitive Analysis intern will use market research and competitive analysis to help Cambridge create a library of technological offerings utilized by other broker-dealers. Working in the Information Services Department, the intern will have exposure to the Product Owner Team and work closely with the Director of Product Management. The ideal candidate will be confident, independent, tech savvy, and enjoy data-driven research.

Compliance The Compliance Department offers a unique opportunity that will introduce a student intern to a broad range of financial industry concepts and ideas. Specifically, the Compliance intern will be asked to learn Lean techniques and gain experience researching, document existing processes, and work with various stakeholders both within and outside of the Compliance Department. Having exposure to multiple areas within the department will provide immediate value should the intern choose to work in the financial services industry.

Compliance/LegalThis internship is co-sponsored by Compliance and Legal Departments. This unique opportunity will provide an intern with a variety of projects like research and analysis of state and federal laws; self-regulatory organization rules; drafting letters, reports, memorandums, presentations, and basic contracts; and data analysis and review. Ideal candidates should be attending an American Bar Association accredited law school, as well as, have a background and/or interest in the financial industry, compliance, regulation, or securities law.

ConferencesThe Conferences intern will be exposed to a variety of different business areas, including conference and event planning, which will help them learn how to market to different audiences including Cambridge advisors, recruits, and wholesalers. Primary responsibilities will include developing the content for our event mobile app; providing support on all aspects of Cambridge’s national conference, Ignite; and providing customer service to attendees. The intern will gain knowledge in a fast-paced event planning and marketing environment within the financial services industry. Ability to travel to our national conference in Chicago, Illinois, is ideal.

Continuous Improvement The Continuous Improvement intern will be provided an in-depth opportunity to facilitate teams, use Lean Theory and tools learned through coursework, and build analytical and problem-solving skills. The intern will get a hands-on experience with implementing an Organization Lean assessment. The ideal candidate will have coursework, experience, or knowledge in Lean, Six Sigma, process improvement, change management, or supply chain.

Financial Reporting The Financial Reporting intern will gain valuable knowledge in the Cambridge Accounting Department as they assist with the month- and quarter-end close process through the compilation of financial statements and reconciliation of supporting schedules. In addition, the intern will assist in the review processes for efficiencies and provide suggestions for improvement to management. Candidates must have completed intermediate accounting courses by the start of the internship. General knowledge of financial accounting and a desire to gain further knowledge of the accounting cycle is required.

Human Resources (HR) Build on classroom learning with this internship opportunity in the Human Resources (HR) Department. The HR intern will research and develop additional campus outreach opportunities to gain more exposure at local colleges. Projects will include contributions to company committees, planning the all-company summer event, improving The Next Step® internship program, and enhancing the HR Department SharePoint. The intern must be proficient in Microsoft Office including Excel, and have taken some general HR courses.

Information Systems (IS) The Application Programmer intern will be part of a software development team working on designing, developing, and testing software features and components. Project work will include web programming and business layer design and development. The intern will learn and use standard industry practices such as established coding conventions, writing unit tests, code reviews, and pair programming. They will use Continuous Integration and participate in the Agile/Scrum software development methodology. The intern will gain experience with various technologies and tools from the following: C#, .NET Framework, ASP.NET, ASP.NET MVC, SQL, Visual Studio, MS SQL Server Management Studio, TeamCity, Team Foundation Server (TFS), and others.

Information Technology (IT) InfrastructureJoin the Information Technology (IT) Team to gain real world skills relating to a large scale Microsoft Active Directory Forest. The IT intern will work with multiple departments and complete cross-departmental IT projects. Over the course of the internship, the intern will create electronic forms within SharePoint as well as build and install new associate computers and equipment.

Information Technology (IT) Production Support Are you looking to develop real world skills relating to a large scale Microsoft Active Directory Forest? The Information Technology (IT) Production Support intern will lead the cleanup of Active Directory orphaned accounts and data from Windows Servers, SQL Server, and Exchange. Ideal candidates would be looking to work in a fast-paced environment where there are endless opportunities to work with new and emerging technologies.

LegalThe Legal/Risk Management Team offers a unique opportunity to research and analyze state and federal laws and self-regulatory organization rules. Projects include drafting letters, reports, memorandums, presentations, and basic contracts; data analysis and review; and interacting with other departments to help complete tasks, resolve issues, or improve processes and procedures. Candidates should have completed at least one year of an accredited law school program.

Practice Management Tech ConsultingFor a rewarding technology internship, join Cambridge’s Technology Consulting Team. The Technology Consulting intern will support vendor due diligence and vendor evaluation requests for new or existing vendors in the program. The intern will also work to enhance Cambridge’s relationship with third-party technology vendors through calls to discuss products and understand features and benefits. The intern will also be given ample opportunity to network with professionals in the technology and financial industries.

Public Relations and Creative Marketing(Advisor Relations)Join the Public Relations and Creative Marketing Team as an Advisor Relations intern to gain experience creating marketing collateral for our financial advisors located in firms throughout the nation. The intern will participate in creating business profiles, websites, and personalized and customized collateral, as well as partake in marketing consults. Ideal candidates are self-starters, well organized, and able to work under pressure.

Public Relations and Creative Marketing(Media Relations)Join the Public Relations and Creative Marketing Team to gain experience in a fast-paced public relations world. The intern will develop creative content for our clients, support Cambridge’s social media outlets, and develop promotional campaigns. A heavy focus on writing will be emphasized through executive ghost writing projects. Exposure to working with media and writing press releases will allow the intern to put their classroom knowledge to the test. Ideal candidates are self-starters, well organized, and able to work under pressure.

Retirement and Wealth StrategiesAre you looking to get in-depth exposure to retirement planning systems and financial advisors working directly with retirement plans? If so, the Retirement and Wealth Strategies internship is the place for you. The intern will assist in facilitating quotes for Cambridge Retirement Plan Strategies and preparing paperwork for initial review. The Retirement and Wealth Strategies intern will also review financial wellness material and suggest enhancements to this offering.
