CSC offers enriching science opportunities for rising Pre-K through High School learners in geology, chemistry, astronomy, biology, environmental science, and more! Classes are designed to be hands-on, as well as age and science content appropriate.

Astronomy content and planetarium shows will be presented in CSC’s updated Millholland Planetarium. New technology provides for crisper images, new content, and additional resources to learn about space and much more!

Registration Information
WHEN:Preschool – 8th Grade: Choose the Tuesday orWednesday in the 3rd week of each monthHigh School: Wednesdays in the third week of each month
CLASS TIME: 1:00 - 2:30 PM
DROP OFF:Beginning 10 minutes to class time,sign in at the West Building Lobby.
PICK UP:Participants will be signed out in theWest Building Lobby by a parent or guardian.*Exceptions can be made for older students with parental permission, or for mobility limitations;contact Erin Graves for accommodations.
COST:
Preschool – 8th Grade:
• CSC Members: $16 per class ($130 entire year) plus tax.
• Non-members: $26 per class ($210 entire year) plus tax.
High School:• CSC Members: $20 per class plus tax.• Non-members: $30 per class plus tax.

Payment and registration forms are required to reserve your child’sspace. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. If youneed to cancel a registration, you must do so at least two weeks priorto the class date in order to receive a refund, minus an administrativefee of $5.
Please note, CSC reserves the right to cancel a class (and issue fullrefunds) if minimum enrollment is not met.
If you sign up for the year, refunds will not be paid for missedprograms, unless they are canceled by CSC.
An optional payment plan will allow for installments to be paidthroughout the year. $40 per child and membership, if applicable,must be paid at time of registration. Call (828) 322-8169 for details.

COVID-19 Safety Procedures
CSC will follow all NC Dept. of Health & Human Services guidelines for educational settings to protect the health of our participants and staff. These procedures may include masking, social distancing, smaller class sizes, and/or limiting access to classrooms for parents/caregivers.
Current CSC procedures can be found on the education page of CSC’s website. We appreciate your flexibility as the pandemic continues.

Pre-K - Kindergarten September 14-15: Sink or Float
Learn what makes some objects sinkand others float. Use a ball of clay to make a boat that floats andsee raisins bobbing in a cup.
November 16-17: Sensational Senses
Smell, see, hear, touch, and taste! Use all of your senses in this fun-filled class.
1st - 2nd Grade

October 12-13: Move OnInvestigate forces – make things roll,bounce, slide, and fly while learningthe science of motion.
December 14-15: Stuck on You
Find out what will stick to a magnet and why. Make a magnet discovery bottle.
January 11-12: Drip, Drip, Hop, Hop
Come find out who lives in a rainforest. Make a tree frog and listen to the sounds of the rainforest.
February 15-16: My Beating Heart
Listen to your heart with a real stethoscope. Make your own squishy heart and see how blood pumps through your body.
March 15-16: Soil, Rocks, and Minerals
Explore and identify objects that are made from animals, plants, or rocks. Examine clay, sand, and silt. “Mine” for gems to take home and start a rock collection.
April 12-13: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Learn ways you can help conserve energy and reduce pollution! Participate in an Earth awareness scavenger hunt.
May 17-18: Bug-o-rama
Grab a magnifier and check out insects and spiders. Make a model of metamorphosis and see butterflies up close!
November 16-17: It’s a Gas
Investigate the properties of gases. Learn about air pressure, the forces of flight, and more.
October 12-13: Going BattyBats aren’t scary! Participate in fun activities centered on Janell Cannon’s Stellaluna.
December 14-15: Star Stories
Learn about the winter night sky in the Millholland Planetarium, including a viewing of Legends of the Night Sky - Orion.
January 11-12: Snot-tastic Science
Explore snot and other gross things while you learn about your body. Watch Grossology and You in the Millholland Planetarium.
February 15-16: Slithery Snakes
Participate in fun activities centered on Janell Cannon’s Verdi. Meet a couple of CSC’s scaly inhabitants.
March 15-16: Dinosaurs Galore
Learn about the dinosaurs that roamed the earth. Measure a dinosaur bone and dig for shark’s teeth.
April 12-13: Water Works
Bubble over with fun as you experiment with water! You will get wet; you may get soaked!
May 17-18: What’s the Buzz?
Enter the fascinating world of honeybees! Examine an observation hive and look for the queen bee. Learn how to communicate like bees to find the best nectar.
3rd - 4th GradeSeptember 14-15: Lights, Heat, Action!Track the movement of heat and discover which materials conduct the most energy.
November 16-17: Wild Weather Ride
Explore all things weather-related on our planet and others too. Watch Zula Patrol: Under the Weather in the Millholland Planetarium.
October 12-13: Who Cut the Cheese?Learn all about your digestive system (including the smellier parts) and other gross things about your body. Watch Grossology and You in the Millholland Planetarium.
December 14-15: Winter Constellations
Become an expert on your night sky! Make a planisphere and use it in the Millholland Planetarium. View the feature Legends of the Night Sky - Orion.
January 11-12: Sound Science
Make some noise while investigating pitch and volume. Play a unique musical instrument without touching it!
February 15-16: Amphibian Misfortunes
Solve the mystery of mutating frogs in this class that combines genetics, ecology, and math.
March 15-16: Science Tool Time
Discover the world of tools around you, particularly those used by scientists. Learn how tools make our work easier and which ones we use every day.
April 12-13: Talkin’ Trash
Learn about the impact of trash on our earth and oceans and how YOU can help. Do some fun experiments using recycled materials.
May 17-18: Bugology
Observe all things creepy crawly to learn about insects, metamorphosis, and more.
September 14-15: Hair-raising Science
Experiment with magnets and electricity. Construct a circuit, watch a pickle glow, and have some “hair-raising” fun with balloons and a Van de Graaff generator.

4Changing Lives and Inspiring Learning Through Science and Wonder
5th - 6th Grade
September 14-15: Exotic Exosolar PlanetsBoard the spaceship in CSC’s Millholland Planetarium to fly past the planets and away from the solar system. Watch Extreme Planets and learn about the unique worlds beyond the Sun.
November 16-17: Fizz, Bubble, Foam
Learn about matter as you perform chemical experiments that are a gas! Get ready to mix up the ingredients for fun!
7th - 8th Grade
October 12-13: Grossology and YouExplore your body’s immune, digestive, and respiratory systems. Watch Grossology and You in the Millholland Planetarium.
December 14-15: Move It
Experience how playing with toys can help you make discoveries about Newton’s laws of motion and other physics forces.
January 11-12: Dive Right In
Does a clam have a foot? Does a sea star have a mouth? Find out in this dissection class for junior marine biologists.(Additional $4 materials charge)
February 15-16: Close Encounters
Enhance your microscope skills and slide preparation techniques as you view a hidden world.
March 15-16: 3D Printing
Watch a 3D printer in action. Play around in TinkerCad, the software that translates your imagined objects into reality!
April 12-13: Seed & Soil Science
Dig into dirt! Use science tools to examine plants and seeds. Sift through soils to learn about what’s under your feet. Participants will meet at Glenn Hilton Park 10 minutes after class start time, and be picked up from there 10 minutes after end of class time (to accommodate families with multiple children enrolled in CSC homeschool classes).
May 17-18: Weather Watchers
Discover the tools that help us measure and predict weather! Learn to forecast for your family.
November 16-17: Vet School
Want to be a veterinarian? Test your diagnostic skills by “reading” animal x-rays. Learn to use a syringe and how to suture!
October 12-13: Waves, Waves, WavesInvestigate sound, light, and seismic, waves through hands-on experiments using lasers, tuning forks, and toys.
December 14-15: Science Without Answers
Discover solutions to wacky science questions through fun experimentation.
January 11-12: Farts and Phlegm
Explore your body’s immune, digestive, and respiratory systems. Watch Grossology and You in the Millholland Planetarium.
February 15-16: Something’s Fishy
Dissect a perch and investigate their unique anatomy. Discover what keeps them afloat and get a microscopic view of scales. Materials Fee: $8.00
March 15-16: Hydromania
Assess the water quality of a local stream through hands-on testing. Learn what macro-invertebrates can tell us about the health of the stream.
April 12-13: Poly...what?
Find out what polymers are and perform amazing experiments to discover how they’re used in everyday life.
May 17-18: DNA Day
Crack the genetic code as you work to extract DNA.
High School - PhysicalScience/Astronomy
October 13: Going Around In CirclesExplore motion from beginning to end: why it starts, why it stops, and what happens when we spin.
November 17: Is Anything Really “COLD”?
Develop an understanding of heat energy and its transfer, including the insulation properties of several common substances. Study the connection between heat and the kinetic energy of atoms.
September 15: The Properties of WavesExplore the properties of light through the use of lenses and mirrors. Discover properties of sound waves through hands-on experiments.
December 15: It’s Electrifying
Construct different types of electrical currents and learn the significance of Ohm’s Law.
January 12: It’s a Matter of Density
Develop an understanding of how matter can be described in terms of density. Can liquids be denser than solids? Make a density column.
February 16: Universal Science
An introduction to space science including the light spectrum, black holes, astronomical measurement, and galaxy formation.
March 16: Great Balls of Fire
Discover the differences between our solar system’s non-planetary bodies: comets, meteors, and asteroids. Make models and explore their properties.
April 13: The Sun - Our Stellar Sea
Learn about our Sun, the forces that hold it together, its formation, life cycle, and processes. Discover how the Sun’s magnetic storms impact planet Earth.
May 18: Planetary Objects
Explore the members of our solar system, their structures, their similarities and differences, and how they can impact one another.
September 14-15: The Pressure’s On
It’s everywhere but you don’t see it or feel it! Discover how air pressure affects the world around us and learn some fun air pressure tricks.
