Transcript of Homes & Studios Program. Polasek was named a Great...

Our mission is to promote the legacy of internationally known Czech-American sculptor, Albin Polasek, and to enrich lives through the power of inspiration conveyed by his STORY, SETTING and ART.

Founded in 1961, the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens preserves the 200+ piece collection of world-renowned Czech-American sculptor Albin Polasek (1871-1965). Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the museum is one of only 43 sites in the Historic Artists’ Homes & Studios Program. Polasek was named a Great Floridian by the State of Florida in 2000 and inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004 for his “strong and sustained commitment toward the development of cultural excellence.”

Tours in 2018

The Albin Polasek Museum and & Sculpture Gardens’ primary educational program is the docent-led tour of Polasek’s historic home and studio. Inspiring tours featuring Polasek’s home and artwork illustrate his life story of emigrating to the United States in 1901, becoming a celebrated artist, and continuing to create monumental works of art from his wheelchair after suffering a debilitating stroke at age 70. Tours are offered Tuesday through Sunday, year-round.

Island Objects: Art and Adaptation in MicronesiaThe winter-spring 2017-2018 exhibition featured local anthropologist Barbara Wavell’s private collection of items from the Pacific Islands of Micronesia dating from the 1800s to present day.

Arabesque: Contemporary Conversations The summer exhibition interpreted traditional Islamic art through the eyes of contemporary artists in a variety of styles and mediums.

Soul of Graffiti: Jan KalábThe fall exhibition featured the work of contemporary Prague artist Jan Kaláb, known internationally for his innovative 3-D graffiti. It coincided with the 100th

anniversary of Czechoslovakia and honored the heritage of Albin Polasek.

Lay of the Land: The Art of Florida’s Cattle Culture Presented in collaboration with the Florida Cattlemen’s Association, the winter-spring 2018-2019 exhibition explored Florida’s unique 500-year cattle industry through art and objects on loan from members of Cowboy Artist’s Association of Florida, Cowboy “craftsmen” from around the state, private collections, and the Seminole Tribe.

2018 marked the third full year that the Capen House was open to the public as a community gathering space for weddings, meetings, retreats, corporate events, celebrations of life, public programming events, and docent-led tours. The 1885 Capen House is the third oldest home in Winter Park and was saved from demolition and relocated to the Polasek Museum property in 2013. It was restored, renovated, and opened to the public in 2015. The project was recognized by the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation with an Organizational Achievement Award and by the City of Winter Park with a Historic Preservation Award for Excellence in Commercial Renovation.
