Led by Randy Moore, PT, OCS, MBA, the Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine team offers unique therapies from clinicians with multiple certifications who are using new, advanced equipment.

Hand and Upper Extremity Therapies

Patients who have been injured or are experiencing movement problems receive individualized therapy to regain or maintain function, or learn solutions for overcoming problem issues.

“Our new, larger treatment space allows us to provide the highest quality of care,” explains Lynne Pinkus, OTR/L, CHT. “We are also able to more effectively coordinate with orthopedic physicians and other specialists to best meet the needs of each patient.”

Women’s Health Therapy

Memorial leads many larger regional healthcare systems in Ohio by providing women’s health therapy and pelvic floor treatment. Musculoskeletal disorders that affect women in all stages of life include pelvic pain, urinary or fecal incontinence, prolapse, sexual

dysfunction, bowel disorders, pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain, post-partum recovery, and osteoporosis. Men with pelvic floor dysfunction are also treated.

Rebecca Kelty, PT, DPT treats patients from a wide geographic region. "Treatment is in a private setting, with access, as needed, to the larger therapy areas,” explains Kelty. “It’s not just Kegel exercises anymore.”

Unique Therapies at Memorial

A variety of state-of-the-art therapies are now available at the new

Memorial City Gate Medical Center.

Lymphedema Therapy

Most patients requiring lymphedema therapy are cancer patients who have undergone the removal

of lymph nodes, resulting in an inability to adequately drain lymph fluid produced by the body. This condition could develop soon after surgery, or years later. The area affected becomes greatly enlarged and swollen.

“We offer the ‘Gold Standard’ of treatment: Complete Decongestive Therapy,” explains Kelty. “We first provide manual therapy to remove the excess fluid. Then, the affected area is wrapped in special, snug compression garments that may be worn up to 24 hours a day.”

Lymphedema can develop in other parts of the body in addition to arms. Early treatment is recommended to reduce treatment length and the risk of life-threatening infections, disfiguring limb edema, and skin changes.

These therapies, and others, are available at the Memorial City Gate Medical Center located at 120 Coleman’s Crossings Boulevard in Marysville. A satellite facility is located at Memorial Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine at 900 Village Boulevard, Suite 4 in Plain City. A pediatric therapies center designed for smaller, younger patients is located at 171 Morey Drive, Marysville.

For more information, or to schedule an evaluation or therapy, call Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine at (937) 578-7841.

Therapy for Balance

“When illness or injury cause vestibular and balance disorders, a patient can experience debilitating dizziness, says Jennifer Segner-Maxwell, PT, DPT, Coordinator of Physical Therapy, Sports Medicine, and

a vestibular specialist. “Our therapies desensitize the balance system to movements that provoke symptoms, while improving balance.”

This therapy benefits patients who suffer from imbalance; vertigo (with or without nausea); difficulty walking in visually busy environments, poor lighting, or on uneven surfaces; head trauma or injury (including post-concussive syndrome); or peripheral vestibular disorders. Those with neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or those recovering from a stroke/cerebrovascular accident may benefit with improved strength, flexibility, and balance.

ASTYM to Improve Movement, Reduce Pain

Injury, overuse, or surgery often create scar tissue or painful, immobile areas that interfere with body movement and function.

“We have eight therapists certified in ASTYM, in which

specialized instruments are passed over the affected areas to identify and break down dysfunctional or scar tissue,” explains Kathy Holland, PT, MSPT. “The body restarts the healing process, regenerating tissue in a smoother manner that creates stronger, more functional tissue – while decreasing pain."

ASTYM helps chronic issues, or those that tend to recur – like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, hamstring strains, and tennis elbow. Many patients report a significant change in their symptoms after the first three to four visits.

Massage Therapy – New at Memorial

Massage Therapist Ken Johnson is one of the few certified Active Release Technique (ART) professionals in Ohio. He treats headaches, back pain, shoulder pain, and conditions like carpal

tunnel syndrome, shin splints, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems and tennis elbow.

“I use a patented soft tissue system, a movement –based massage technique,” Johnson explains. “I use my hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. I combine precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.”

Real-Life Environments

Persons recovering from strokes or injuries often need to learn how to perform everyday functions. Specially designed kitchen and bathroom space provides real-life environments for

patients regaining their independence.

Medication Therapies

FOR MANY MEN their quality of life is affected as they may experience sudden urges to urinate, strain while urinating, and loss of sleep as they awake often to go to the bathroom. Medication may produce unwanted side-effects or may not work long-term. As the prostate tissue swells, it places pressure on the urethra, narrowing the passageway which carries urine from the bladder out of the body. If untreated, restricted urine flow can result in infections and blood in urine, with more advanced cases leading to permanent stretching of the bladder which affects bladder control, and can cause kidney failure.

IN A GROWING EFFORT to help patients with chronic conditions improve their quality of life and avoid return visits to the hospital, Memorial Hospital’s Medication Therapies Center is expanding.

Because medication usage plays a critical role in chronic disease management, certified clinical pharmacists meet regularly with patients to develop a customized medication plan that works with personal schedules and lifestyles.

In the new Transitions of Care Clinic opening this Spring, Nurse Practitioner Abby Gamby will join pharmacists on a clinical team that will work closely with hospitalized patients and continue after they go home. Education about medications, assistance in setting up important follow-up appointments with medical providers, and support in obtaining needed medications and services, are the keys to success.

Also opening soon is Central Ohio’s only pharmacist-managed COPD Clinic, for those diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The pharmacist-led program focuses on proper use of medications, smoking cessation, healthy lifestyle habits, and exercise, including a collaboration with the Wellness Center at Memorial Hospital, which offers an exercise program for cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Clinic services can easily be scheduled through a referral by the patient’s primary care physician or specialist who will receive a written report following each visit.

For information about the Medication Therapies Center at Memorial Hospital, call (937) 578-4281.

Michael Jordan, DO, a board-certified urologist with Memorial Urology explains, “It’s best to treat enlarged prostate-related issues early, to prevent bladder infections, the related need for antibiotics, and other complications. Early treatment can bring an improved quality of life.” He adds that sexual function may improve following this procedure, too.

The least invasive treatment, GreenLight Laser Therapy, is performed under general anesthesia – usually on an outpatient basis. The laser heats and vaporizes the swollen prostate tissue that is blocking the flow of urine. Compared with traditional surgical options, GreenLight Laser Therapy is associated with less blood loss and faster recovery.

Patients on blood-thinning medications or anticoagulation drugs may safely undergo this procedure.

Most patients experience a rapid relief of symptoms and a dramatic improvement in urine flow within 24 hours after the procedure, and soon return to normal activities.

GreenLight Laser Therapy is covered by Medicare and most private insurers. Patients are advised to consult with their primary care physicians if experiencing symptoms related to an enlarged prostate.

For more information about GreenLight Laser Therapy, or to schedule a consultation to discuss urinary issues, contact Dr. Jordan at Memorial Urology at (937) 578-2626.

Colorectal Surgery

» Abdominal pain, cramps or bloating

» Constipation, diarrhea, or pelvic pain

» Pain during or after a bowel movement

» A change in bowel habits

» Rectal bleeding

» A mass near the anus opening

» Fecal incontinence

Your examination many include tests to determine if you have a food allergy, a disorder, or cancer of the colon, rectum or anus. It is important to seek treatment promptly to avoid complications or advancement in the progress of the disorder or issue.

Schedule an examination if you experience these symptoms:

Dr. Barker uses minimally-invasive laparoscopy to remove colon and rectal cancers, as well as treat conditions such

as diverticulitis and inflammatory bowel disease. Patients undergoing these surgeries often can leave the hospital after two to three days, instead of the five- to seven-day hospitalization following more traditional types of colon and rectal surgery.

He also utilizes the newest techniques for treating a wide range of anorectal conditions, including hemorrhoids, fissures, fistulas, rectal prolapse, and incontinence.

Dr. Barker explains that he evaluates each patient and develops a customized treatment plan that best fits their needs and situation. “There are often various options that are less invasive and provide for a smoother recovery. It’s my job to work with the patient and their family to ensure understanding, and to optimize their care.”

A native of South Dakota, Dr. Barker is glad to return to work in the Midwest. "I work with all of my patients to the best of my ability, as if they were family members.”

To schedule an appointment with Dr. Barker, call Memorial General & Colorectal Surgery at (937) 578-2650. Learn more about the medical practice at memorialohio.com.

PATIENTS facing colorectal (colon and rectal) surgeries or those with anorectal

(anus and rectal) conditions can now receive treatment at Memorial Hospital from one of the few fellowship-trained

colorectal surgeons in the region. Surgeon Adam Barker, MD, who recently

joined Memorial General & Colorectal Surgery in Marysville, uses minimally-

invasive techniques that provide less post-operative pain, a shortened hospital stay, and a faster recovery for a variety of

surgeries and procedures.

Ask a Doc

Ask a DocYOUASKED Q

A: All patients must be referred to us by their primary care physician or a specialist. During their first visit, we obtain a medical history and perform a focused physical exam. Additional testing may be needed. We discuss treatment options and develop a customized plan. New patients can usually be seen within two weeks, and same-day appointments are available for emergencies. We use a multidisciplinary approach and evaluate everything including lifestyle and living situation, to determine the root cause for the pain.

Q How many visits are needed for pain management?

A: A patient with acute pain may need to return for three to six visits over a year. Patients with chronic

pain may need the same or more visits depending on the complexity of their issues. The condition may be managed as long as needed.

What does a visit to the Memorial Hospital Pain Management Center involve?

Q What pain management therapies are available in addition to medication?

A: Pain may have a neurologic cause, or it may be musculoskeletal pain affecting the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones. We may use imaging technology or perform a nerve conduction study to help determine the source of the pain. About half of our patients suffer from radiculopathy (diseases of the nerve root), and we can selectively block nerves to alleviate pain. These patients may receive one or two X-ray-guided corticosteroid injections in an operating room.

Steroid injections may be an effective treatment for some patients with chronic pain. We have seen excellent results with radiofrequency ablation, which uses an electrical current produced by a radio wave to heat up a small area of nerve tissue, thereby decreasing pain signals from that specific area. Physical therapy, massage therapy, or surgery may also be an option for some patients.

Q What conditions may pain management treatment involve?

A: Some of the conditions we treat include neck and back pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), nerve damage, and pain associated with arthritis, muscle spasms, and shingles.

MEMORIAL HEALTH now offers Open MRI at its new Memorial City Gate Medical Center at 120 Coleman’s Crossing Boulevard in Marysville. Detailed images of internal bodily structures are created without the use of radiation, instead using a powerful magnet and a computer. During the procedure, the Open MRI is positioned above and below the patient, with unenclosed side areas.

“Open MRI is a good option for patients who may experience anxiety or claustrophobia with a traditional MRI, which involves the patient lying on a table and sliding into the tube which holds the magnet,” explains Mareva Page, Assistant Vice President of Memorial Hospital.

MRI exams are physically painless and typically require little preparation. Patients experience the low-stress environment at Memorial City Gate Medical Center, offering one of only a few Open MRIs in the region. Pediatric patients are less enclosed and more able to see a parent, who may be present during the imaging procedure.

If your doctor tells you that an MRI is in your future, ask to schedule it with the Open MRI at Memorial.
