Intro: DIY- homemade projectori will show you how to make a homemade projector using mostly things you can find around the house. (remember to read the whole thing before you start because i adding new info at the end as i learn more, im a beginner 2)

Image Notes1. move this in and out to focus picture2. attach cables

    3. thick cardboard on the bottom so it is sturdy

Step 1:What you will needyou will need a large cardboard box, i used a cornflake box, you need a fresnel lens and a regular magnified glass i found the fresnel lens at a shop advertised as (crecard sized magnifier) for about 5 bucks and the magnified glass should be about 2inches across, you also need a br ight light, the brighter the better but led is goodbecause it needs to be cool or else you will cook the lcd i got the lcd from ebay for $28.00 and it allows you to plug anything into it. you will need a round cylender thesame width as the magnified glass (i used pringles chip container) the last few things you will need are aluminum foil ,tape and scissors.i bought that square looking led light of ebay for $20 but i cant use it yet because it needs a heat sink and fan, the other one runs cooler. 12v

Image Notes1. i used this 12v light2. 20watt led 12v from ebay its brighter but i need to get a heat sink for it will install later

    http://www.instructables.com/id/homemade-projector-cornflake-box/

Step 2:How to beginto begin get your box and cut the top off then about halfway down put a piece of cardboard with the fresnel lens in it and firmly tape it down (see pic) cut out another pof card board the same width as the box and cut a hole in it for your light the cardboard around the hole should be covered in tin foil to reflect the most light. insert it inyour box make sure it is in line with the fresnel lens and should be at least 3inches away from it. (update) i just learnt that if you want to make the picture about 3x brigyou need to put a cone + condenser lens/strong magnified glass on the light (see pic)

Image Notes1. fresnel lens2. light goes here

    Image Notes1. back of light

Image Notes1. put foil around light

Image Notes1. condenser lens out of a flashlight2. paper cone to concentrate light into lens3. led inside cone

    http://www.instructables.com/id/homemade-projector-cornflake-box/

Image Notes1. should be touching each other

Step 3:Make light boxnow you have your fresnel lens and light l ined up you need to cover it to keep the light from escaping. to do this you need to cut out 3 pieces of card board and wrap thin tin foil place them around the light and fresnel lens it should be a tight seal with barely any light escaping except for through the f resnel lens.

Image Notes1. fresnel lens2. led3. lens (goes in later)

Image Notes1. wrap these in foil and make a hallway between light and fresnel lens (shiny sidin )2. dirt on the floor

    http://www.instructables.com/id/homemade-projector-cornflake-box/

Image Notes1. should look like this, then just put a lid on it2. lens3. light

Step 4:Attach magnified glassto attach magnified glass, cut the cylinder in half (to about 3-4inches long) both ends should be open tape the magnified glass to one end. cut a hole in the box make s

it lines up with the light and fresnel lens insert it in (lens should be on the outside of the box) to make it more stable you can add another piece of cardboard to hold thecylinder. you can now turn the light on and you should see a shape on the wall push the magnified glass in and out to focus (just put a slide in front of the fresnel lensand you have a slide projector!) if you see the individual leds projected onto the wall and not just a square white light you need to move your fresnel lens farther awayfrom the led.

Image Notes1. this is what you will see sticking out of the front of your projector

Image Notes1. make shure it can slide in and out easily2. jam xtra cables in here (i later put an access hole in so i could put the cord awatidily.

Step 5:Attach the lcdi got this lcd from ebay for 28bucks just type in 2.5 inch lcd reverse monitor or something like that it needs to have the composite input (red yellow white plugs) if it onlyhas the yellow one thats fine. so once you get it unscrew it and be very careful because the lcd is easy to break , take the metal case off the lcd and all the plastic filteuntil you can see through the screen(it wil l still be bury to see through) then place it infront of the fresnel lens (it should be upside down and backwards) when your picis the right way on the wall, tape the screen on and you are done! now just put a l id on the box and stick the cables out the side of it

Image Notes1. remove all this and throw away (unless you like it) and be very gentle with thelcd

Image Notes1. make sure its clearish2. my puppy leg

Image Notes1. those 2 black pices of paper next to screen are to block the l ight around it (makea tight seal or else you will have unwanted light on the projection wall2. where your lens should go3. you can also use a mirror and put your lens here (makes the box smaller)4. lid on light box

Step 6:Now you are finnished.you are finnished now(update) i found a heat sink and installed my 20w led its not that much brighter but i think i can fix that by adjusting the condenser lens on the led and putting a coneshaped thing around it to direct the light here is a picture of the new led. see a video of it in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnRgI-apRtc(i have drawn up some plans for a future projector project)

    jackh94says: Nov 17, 2010. 8:55 AM REPHi,great projector, just a few questions.

1)does the condenser lens that goes close to the LED need to be the size of the LCD screen?

2)does the magnifying glass need to be the size of the screen as well?

3)If I buy a fresnel lens bigger than my screen will it still work if I cut bits off the edges?

4)will the 200 lumen lenser p7 torch work for this if I take the supllied lens off it?

    Thanks in advance

porkypinekiwisays: Jan 11, 2011. 12:28 PM REP1 no2 i dont know, it might work but youll have to try3 yes that will work it might not be an even light and it wont be very bright though.

jackh94says: Jan 12, 2011. 1:43 AM REPthanks for that, in the end my a-levels were taking up too much t ime but I intend to make this (or something similar) over the holidays (UK holidays)

flormansays: Dec 27, 2010. 11:12 AM REPDo you have to use a 2.5 inch screen, or can you use a bigger one.

porkypinekiwisays: Jan 11, 2011. 12:29 PM REPi have seen people use up to 15inch screens but it needs different lenses and a much brighter light

porkypinekiwisays: Jan 11, 2011. 12:24 PM REPyou could use a bigger one but it wouldnt be as bright and you might have to adjust the mag glass size

kiramayasays: Nov 13, 2010. 11:57 AM REPa normal maginifer will do the job,did u use a triplet lens

porkypinekiwisays: Jan 11, 2011. 12:23 PM REPno but i did use more than 1 mag glass/ fresnel lens

antonbergjrsays: Mar 28, 2010. 12:32 AM REPis this the one u orderd?if so i just wanted to know if it was easy or hard to get the backlight off

    http://electronics.shop.ebay.com/Car-Electronics-/3270/i.html?_nkw=2.5+lcd&LH_BIN=1&LH_IncludeSIF=1&_catref=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m489

porkypinekiwisays: Mar 28, 2010. 11:57 PM REPyes that is it just something around 30bucks with shipping all you need to get the backlight off is a screwdriver and knife + 10min and remember to bevery gentile with the screen i broke my first one (mp4 player)

locccisays: Sep 28, 2010. 7:36 PM REPI was just wondering how you got your backlights off. I peeled all the layers off until it was clear but ofcourse the little leds are still at the bottom. Imnot sure how to disconnect them without disconnecting the input. How did you do it?

    thanks,locci

porkypinekiwisays: Oct 15, 2010. 4:50 PM REPyou could break the led? i was lazy and just put duct tape over it, it doesnt really matter cause it doesnt effect the projection

locccisays: Oct 15, 2010. 6:47 PM REPOh i ended up desoldering the bit that the lights come from. But either way.

porkypinekiwisays: Oct 15, 2010. 4:55 PM REPi strongly reccomend getting an old slide projector and taking the focus lens out of it (i just did it and its AWESOME now, much more focused and twice asbig image on the wall

ChiefSlayasays: Oct 13, 2010. 1:22 AM REPWow, nice job! I'm definitely going to try making this! Is the resolution of the screen good? Do you notice the pixels much?

porkypinekiwisays: Oct 15, 2010. 4:49 PM REPits ok, i dont really mind the pixels, they help me tell if its focused properly but im going to order a better screen something around 400 by 600 pixels

bro222says: Aug 25, 2010. 9:23 PM REPwell, dr nerdington, this isn't a commercial projector is is?

technoguy94says: Apr 28, 2010. 12:41 PM REPTwo questions:1) Is the LCD screen not a typical screen? Usually they're not transparent and the light behind it wouldn't do anything.2) Did you have any idea what you were actually doing? Some of this seems kind of random.

It would help if you used proper grammar+spelling. It's really hard to read the steps.

dantheman1312says: Aug 4, 2010. 5:35 PM REPdude you need to stop saying stuff what you dont know and stop criticizing peoples spelling its fine.

cclementi6says: Jun 22, 2010. 9:47 PM REPLCD's are clear (translucent), or you wouldn't be able to see them. Do y ou even know how they basically work? There's a backlight that shines throughthe back of the LCD and projects light out. Projectors work by basically making t he backlight brighter, and focusing the light into a projected beam. I 'veseen people take apart monitors and put them on old classroom overhead projectors, pretty creative lol.

porkypinekiwisays: Apr 29, 2010. 7:41 AM REPyes i know what i am doing, but i just cant be bothered to re wright the whole thing, im going to make another better projector and that instructablesshould be a bit better, so with the screen you peel off the light and silver backing and then i ts clear, just read what i t says to do and theres even photosit.

jothi.instrusays: Jul 9, 2010. 5:55 AM REPhi.... can u say wat is that fresnel lens mean... is those available in shops...

porkypinekiwisays: Jul 9, 2010. 9:25 PM REPyes you can get it in a shop its some times called a credit card sized magnified glass. its just a piece of plastic with lines on it that that makes it a flatmagnified glass. ill put a new instructable up soon to make it easier

jothi.instrusays: Jul 9, 2010. 6:02 AM REPcan u explain me this in brief..... about the steps done in the process...... pls..

Jimbobjoeymansays: Jul 6, 2010. 1:19 PM REPhow did you power this and how did you wire everything up ? Seriously thinking about doing this and I really need to know

porkypinekiwisays: Jul 7, 2010. 9:07 PM REPi think the led was 12v so i just used this old 12volt transformer that i got from an old portable dvd player and everything else was 12 volt aswell fan, lcdscreen ect but just make shure its dc and not ac or else you will destroy all of your electronics (i learnt that the hard way)

Jimbobjoeymansays: Jul 8, 2010. 4:55 AM REPdid you have to use any resistor with the led as everything was 12v. I persume you wired everything in parallel.

dbuilder2says: Jun 9, 2010. 11:54 AM REPstill stuck. where did you get the circle LEDs?
